What sort of spoon forgets he has a bike "lying around". FFS get the AX going in the RS or give it to me and I WILL get it going, race it and post piccie's of it going.

21 April...
I had my first ride on the Mt Welly kart track on my racebike (GP125), and got heaps of advice from the fast dudes! Managed to pass a couple of people and use heaps of energy. In the 2nd practice I put some of the advice into practice and got my lap times and pegs down alot... then of course i fell off!:shit: Pegs lifted the front wheel off the ground.

22 April. Morning practice got my lap times down even more (35.99:shutup: ) and i got smoother and faster, and hung off more, but still got the pegs down (note to self: hang off MORE), and my knee down ONCE with the back sliding a little..
Had a go at Superpole, great fun, wheelied outta pitlane OH Yeah! and got my lap time down to a 35:42 i think..? :whocares:
RACE!!
I qualified 5th for the B Grade race, lined up on the grid, and stalled it when the flag dropped! Thanks john for the pushstart! So i started well last! Turned the heat up and did a 34:82 lap, and made all my places back up to 4th, and lapped the people i had already passed. then i settled into good 35 second laps until the 43rd lap, when, yes... I FELL OFF!:shit: :gob: :oi-grr: :blank: oh yay Tarmac surfing!
couldn't bump my bike so i retired.
BUT it was REALLY FUN!

Josh

Hey good on you Josh,

Yeah I rolled up to the new Welly track well all I have to say is great track,

And me and RG and a couple of others set the track up to how we liked it.

Its an awsome area in Wellington,

And Thanks to Mudboy and AJTurbo for the loan of the bikes, Except Aj's bike managed to break down before I got to ride it,

It is so much fun I had heaps of fun when I got to ride a bike,

Even started trying my Stand up Wheelies at the end,

Hi guys, I'm having a problem with my GP125 Bucket. Since i last raced it, its been behaving strangely... it bogs down, and then the revs climb by themselves on a shut throttle. Yesterday, it revved past redline, and turning ignition off and hitting the killswitch didnt kill the motor, so i had to put it in gear with the brakes on and stall it.. any ideas on what this could be? I'm taking the motor out today for a rebuild anyway.

Fooman
7th May 2007, 09:55
Rev's don't climb on a shut throttle - it doesn't run off a vacuum! Check your throttle cable for binding, the butterfly for proper action, idle adjustment etc in the first instance.

Cheers,
FM

CM2005
7th May 2007, 10:09
it does run like a diesel.... ign off, and it was going up up up... hmmm.. i'm pulling the motor out today for a rebuild, seals, bearings rebore, that might help...

F5 Dave
7th May 2007, 10:51
Butterfly? What Butterfly? If it has a butterfly then that's probably the problem:gob: Maybe one of the little legs has gotten trapped in the pilot jet, that's the smallest jet in the carb & is worth cleaning as can affect off throttle. If it bogs dead the main could have fallen out.

Sometimes at max revs the kill switch doesn't play ball esp if not a super earth connection.

CM2005
7th May 2007, 12:06
cheers dave, i think that could be the case, it was almost behaving like it was leaning out? i think he means slide aye?

F5 Dave
7th May 2007, 12:14
I think he was thinking of the CV carb on his Diesel.

Expert
7th May 2007, 13:46
Sometimes if you have a lot of carbon in the combustion chamber this can glow red hot and acts as a ignitor for the mixture so turning off the ignition or even removing the plug cap will not stop the motor.
Carburetted cars have a fuel solenoid in the carb to shut off the fuel to stop this happening but bikes don't so they keep going on the glowing carbon.

Revs climbing is an air leek if the slide isn't sticking. Seels? Base gasket? Usually more of a blowing air problem than a sucking problem but if you've checked the rubber manifold and can't find any leeks look there.

Squirt some light oil on suspect areas while the motor is running and any leeks will be shown up by a drop in revs and smoke (more smoke?) coming out the exhaust because the oil is being drawn in.

How do you spell leek?

Check out my stolen bike post

I'm just transplanting an RD125 motor into my Bucket, Should be an interesting ride, especially with my rep for falling off.

Anyway I need to be clear on the carb regulations, I see earlier a suggested 2x 17mm is the equivqlent to 1 x 24mm. Is there anyway to prove the theory. John's pretty firm on the rules at Mt Welly and I need the bike set up by the book. The RD has 2 x 18mm as standard.

Brett,

Racing is at the Mt wellington Kart track, Tainui Rd. Next meeting (1st of the new season) is on the 14th, 15th of July.
Saturday is a practice day, Sunday is Race day. Come down for a look on Sat, bring your gear and we'll lend you a bike for a few laps if you want to give it a go.

Yep the rule is clear for singles. MAx 24mm, irrelevant for four stroke twins. But really vague for twin two smokes. Can't see what the big deal is the RD is nearly 35 years old. If that ain't a bucket by now I don't know what is.

Tell you what tho. It will kick the ass of some of these later models. :Punk:

Will definately talk to John ( in Aus at the moment ). Wanted your guys opinions first so I had a good case to argue.

Steve

F5 Dave
5th July 2007, 15:51
Hiya. Equivalent to area of 24mm is pretty clear.

pi x D squared / 4 gives

for 17mm 226.8mm area thus x 2 = 453.7

for 24mm 452mm area

Close enough if there was a 17mm carb available.

John was talking about a submission to raise the 125 aircooled carb size to 28mm. 24 is too small to make competitive power against water cooled 100s with 34mm carbs. 28 is a better size, still a big restriction.

Prod John into action or offer to make a submission some how. I would be glad to help but haven't tried here as our club doesn't really care enough.

28mm = 615mm so a couple of 18s (probably std or use RG50 carbs) bored out slightly under 20 would be the go.

See you guys at the 2hr in Nov.

SHELRACING
5th July 2007, 16:25
Cheers for that Dave

As it happens the standard carbs are 18mm.

I know John well, I will have a chat to him hopefully before the next meeting.

I'm going to give the Rd a run on the track on practice day anyway if I can finish it off before the 14th.

See ya in Nov if not sooner. Might take the RD down to Frosty's Taupo track day in Nov if it's running sweet.

Steve

I suppose you're all siiting at your computers waiting to see a pic of the Honda RD 125, I hope you's all didn't loose too much sleep waiting.

So here it is

And the specs
Honda CB125twin frame, Forks - internals modified
Forkbrace
Yamaha RD125 twin motor, standard
Yamaha 17 inch wheels, Dunlop slicks
Suzuki gsx400 brakes
TZ seat
Total loss battery ignition, on the original RD Coils/points

Had the motor running yesterday sounds sweet. But dies when I give it throttle. Air filters are removed and it sound like it just sucks in air and starves itself. Does removing the air filters change the air/fuel ratio ??
Any ideas on fixing the problem please !!

Future changes
Replace the exhausts with some expansion chambers
CDI ignition

If it dies right the moment you open the throttle you will most likely need to reduce the throttle slide cutaway. I've done it with devcon and it worked well. Make sure you rough up the bottom of the slide before you start work so the devcon has something to lock into. Raising the needle may help a little from about 1/8th throttle up to less than 1/2.

Man A bucket being so slow is were you want less weight,
The less weight is the cheapest way of power and speed without touching the engine,
Working the engine up is cool yes,

But ask yourself why?

You waste ALOT of time and money getting the engine worked up as much as you can, your happy, But then you put it back in a heavy frame defeats the porpuse really,

Import a Chinese GL145. $520 to your door.

See you on the 26th of this month then. At least to try the track eh? My bucket should be back in one piece by then.

At the moment, I'm looking at a GP100 on TradeMe (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=112529490). Looks like it's already had a bit of work and comes with a few spares.

What do you think??

Skunk
12th August 2007, 18:54
I like your thinking Ivan - don't get a Chinese engine; get a Chinese engine that weights more...

I hate you Slingshot... Good find I reckon. $200 is a good price. At least it's a 5 speed (I think from memory).

Sully60
12th August 2007, 19:03
I agree with Skunk
That motor would be a good place to start as you will actually be able to get the bits to keep it running for a few seasons to come. I doubt that would be easy especially with a Lifan 150 V-twin where you would have to get two of everything (I know this from experience). One thing though, make sure that chuck in that fuunnky fuel tank, thats just bucketastic!

Sully60
12th August 2007, 19:08
Hey Skunk
I see that the boys got the 125 twin running so the cam timing must be right.
Next thing they need are 2 x CRF70 pistons and a 3mm overbore, we won't see which way it goes.

Are you bringing your ZXR weapon to the next round? It would be good if one bike with a GL145 motor turned some laps, not talking about anyone in particular aye!

Skunk
12th August 2007, 19:19
Love to but I haven't got the money to get either the GL or the TF engine for it running. (Dropped a valve through the piston of the GL, TF is in bits...)

Either way.. i don't think im gonna be riding at the next meeting. i think im still gonna have a brace on my leg holding my pieces on kneecap together. damnit!

Dude I actually wanted to ride my 50 but I need you to prop me up when the front end lets go! Shame about your leg dude I heard the crash was a bit ugly. Was the FXR still going when you sold it? I remember the clattering from the general vicinity of the engine room was getting quite loud when it was hauling my big ass around the carpark last year. I hope you don't know the person who brought it!

Sketchy_Racer
12th August 2007, 21:20
haha.. ohh thats ironic!

I know the person that bought it quite well actually. and as far as i know she's going sweet as a nut (appart from my useless carb tuning!!)

I think that clatter might have been your brain rattling in your head... lmao!!

yeah the knees a bugger.. but the bike well..

Bones grow, bikes cost money. I know what it feels like to almost put $7000 of bike in the bin now. not fun! (okay, maybe not that bad.. but it rooted.. both wheels bent, frame and swingarm cracked.. forks bent.. all body work is a write off.. my handbuilt samba chamber.... thankfully repairable!!!... and all the other odds and ends.)

whos the wise guy who puts white paint on a race track any way!!! (then again.. who scrubs in a new slick in the wet!)

Sully60

Did the bike go into the wall at the end of the pit entrance?

Sketchy_Racer
12th August 2007, 21:32
na.. just coming through the kink after the sweeper, just after pit entrance.. i just ran over one of the new grid marking paint lines.. (thick, i know.) back went out.. i tried to keep it pinned and just lowside the thing.. but na.. it regripped spat me at the wall.. then hit the wall itself..

I've never heard anything as loud as it was when i hit that was aye. it's undescribable!

From then i remember standing at pit wall thinking..im going to have me a wee lay down right now.. before i pass out..

Ivan

When you see your best mate crash 10 metres in front of you and watch him slam into a concrete wall and jump up then fall back to ground and not move honestly, It scares you, And then when you get over to see him get sent away and ambulance on track, lights flashing brought back memorys of Owens crash, man it sucked,

It's easy for the bucket racers who have enough power to actually close the throttle going into the corners. I have to make up for carrying all that excess baggage somehow!
I actually was going slighty slower than I did on the warm up lap the grip went away really quickly. Tex and I walked a lap after everyone left(standing water at this stage) and did our highly scientific foot scuff track adhesion test....there was none! this place would be seriously spooky with proper rain on it.

God.. think of the powerslides that even a bucket would be capapble on that surface it it was wet!!

Sully60
12th August 2007, 22:16
You could probably powerslide quite far if you got it stood up and pinned nice and early.
I slid from the apex of the top turn (going anticlockwise) to the tires on the outside, about 10 or 12 metres. I'm sure it actually picked up speed one I hit the groud - no one passed me even as I was spinning around holding the bars still trying to save it. This IS the kind of crash to have. Come back to buckets Glen and Ivan we are going to change the track layout so we can crash on both sides in one race.

The old tip is pretty much all grass other than a very small (too small for buckets) carpark. The Newlands shopping area might be big enough....and if enough of us turned up there early on a Sunday morning we could mark out a course .

Thanks for the offer, I'd be described on Police 10-7 as around 5'11" medium build (80Kg) although I'm going on a diet cause it's gotta be easier to drop 5kgs off me than the bike :sunny:

Oohhh Riiight then.
5 Kgs off your weight......
No beers after the racing, no KFC, No Maccas, No coke, No pies, No chips,No Ice Cream....easy, LOL.

My leathers should fit you ok unless you have unusual body appendages or are female. Theres one condition, the knee sliders must come back scuffed! It's fine if you have to crash to make this happen. They say god loves a trier, this is the only thing god and I agree on.

I would just like to warn everyone of the state of AJturbos bush.

Last night I voluntered to perform some "work" in AJ's "lower garage" after the work was completed and AJ was finally satisfied I came up from his "lower garage" and caught my head on AJ's untrimmed and extremely unruly bush.

I just about passed out from the pain as AJ's bush is pretty solid and upon putting my hand on my extremely swollen head I found blood to be streaming at an uncontrollable rate.

To his credit plenty of stong medicinal alcohol was applied to the wound (and some, ok most was taken internally)

I thought I would do my community service and warn anyone intending to go down to Ajturbos "lower garage" to be aware of his dangerous bush and take the appropriate safety precautions.

I have attached a photo of the wound to convey the serious nature of this particularly horrible accident.

Ah, yeah, meant to respond to that... I think two riders, two bikes, one van cost us under $800. Over half that was the ferry, then fuel getting there. That's everything... the snacks, meals, and the gift we left the Chch crew for their hospitality.

I have a trailer and five seat van - so I can offer as soon as we sort who/how/when. I'm thinking the 26th will be a good time.

It would fit into a new class of old skool buckets I have been thinking about.
In Wellingtron we have a dichotomy of bucket racing machines between bikes like yours and alloy beam framed USD fork slick shod Motogp wannabes (like mine) We have enough time to run them as a separate class and I know there are heaps of bike like this lurking around.

My Funky Steed is a stock as 1984 Suzuki GP125, with Yoshimura stickers, and bridgestone battlaxes. Up in AKL we race both together, using laptimes to separate classes.
oh and F5, 50cc strokers for hyperactive midgets with twitchy gearchange feet:gob:, and for anyone else skilled, small and brave enough to try, with the odd 100cc 4banger in for luck.:innocent: some of the "fast fifties" riders are fairly inconsiderate to the guys riding steel framed dinosaurs like my bike..

The separate class thing would be cool, especially if enough bikes turn up, then that'd be great. It segregates the whole idea of buckets into two "socio economic groups" 1= 1'000+ spent on rolling frames, and tuned motors, and 2= $506 dollar trademe bargain with the best allloy number boards ever (my bike).. I'm looking at tuning mine slightly and fitting 17" rims with maybe a MX 80cc USD front end, but the basis will stay the same. Its all fair though, so great idea!

I probably didn't explain the reasoning behind having a separate class.
All in races are cool and the old bikes could race in the "Premier Class" as well, as you know AJ the more the better.
I just think that if someone had an ol' skool CG125 or whatever in their garage they could turn up and see "modern looking" bikes and GP framed bikes and be a little dishartened (is that even a word- there has already been enough "Bush" on this thread).
I see it being like post classics for buckets.

The socio economic thing is also a good idea but maybe a little harder to apply. My bike complete rolling chassis cost me nothing because I was in the right place at the right time and the motor came out of the old RG framed rocket twister. I can't afford to spend anything on my buckets but because I have "contacts" I can keep my rig going pretty good.

Keep up the debate Y'all

After my last off I cracked my tank, I've bodged it up with metal epoxy.

Ivan
16th August 2007, 15:07
Problem is I need a tab welded to it so the tank can bolt onto bike then its done

As The standered Aprillia Tank was plastic and is had it,

And I cantfind a tank that willfit, SO i got a RX100 tank i think, it is designed to slide over a tube chassis and be heldin place were as the aprillia is different, so I have to weld a tab on it so I can bolt it to frame and it will be mint but like I said no one wants to weld it.

I reckon that if you're going to split the classes it's best along frame design lines. Backbone and twin spar maybe.

Chch split between 'Production' - as it left the shop pretty much, and 'Super Bucket' - anything modified.

Dar, not that I've really thought about it.

The problem is that the mounting holes don't line up, they're not far off but it will need some adjusting. The pic attached shows the engine in place with a bolt through the top rear mount.

How's the sprocket alignment? (lateraly) and are you able to get the front sprocket closer to the swingarm pivot? Otherwise you can try to line up the three axis of the rr axle swing arm pivot and the c/shaft.
It doesn't look like you have too many other options from your photo. Sometimes you might get away with putting one engine bolt into the closest existing mount as a start point.
I hope you have a good selction of spacers or a lathe. A good selection of long bolts is good. PM me if you get stuck or need anything.
Good luck!

The front sprocket lines up pretty well with the rear sprocket but would probably be good if the front sprocket (ie. the engine) was a little higher but I don't think I can raise it any more.

I haven't got a lathe and will need to buy some long bolts as the ones that I have aren't long enough.

At this stage, I think I'd be happy if I could get one bolt through the front and one bolt through the rear.

Can you tell if that motor was rubber mounted or are there just plain bolt holes. If it was rubber mounted you may have to reconnect the frame rails at th bottom. If you solid mount, you can use the engine a stressed member. Then your flyin!

Sully60
19th August 2007, 20:48
It looks like it was soild mounted before so it should be easy. If the engine was rubber mounted the frame rails around the bottom of the motor have to be intact because the rubber mounts in the egine cases allow the frame to flex too much. Bolting it up solidly uses the engine cases to do this job.
It'll be a tingly thing to ride, you might want to get thicker seat foam unless you're into your butt being buzzed.
