Got a link to the place you brought it from. I'm very keen to try one on the 950.
Cheers R
I brought a 1/3 worn D908RR back from Aus with my 990 last year. I decided last week that I'd better put it on since the Scorp is crap on wet grass. I've clocked up near another 1000km on it and attached a few pics of before and after - it hasn't worn too badly, I think. I rode with a fair bit of gear strapped highish on the top plate & no saddle bags, so I wasn't pushing it. Day 1 - I took a late afternoon/ evening look at the first part of the MMMM ride (north to south) then carried on to the Desert Rd & put the bivvy up near some snow later in the night. Day 2 Ohakune/ Tamaranui/ BoP coast. Wet/near icy roads, fog, slick dirt. New Conti TCK80 on the front.
My first thoughts after initially riding with the D908RR were, oh, that's right, I feels like it's tucking under a bit when cornering - sort of like the start of putting it into a slide. A function of the 140/80 profile compared to the standard 150/70 ( I think that means the D9080RR is 1.2 cm taller and 1cm narrower)
It felt pretty good on the road. i.e. I had a bit of confidence in the wet with it (but only a bit, probably because of the high CoG ). On the wet dirt I had a couple of long quickish straight road slides in the night which I thought may end badly but I came through them OK (with the 'ol ticker ticking a little faster!). On the dry seal it's not a problem but it will obviously slide easier than the Scorpions.
It's obviously a bit noisier than the Scorpions but not dramatically. It felt a bit vague but that could have been a combination of the movement of the knobs and the carcass moving around with the extra weight and about ~33psi (I had ~35psi in the front, I think).
All in all I'd buy one again but I've got my fresh TKC80 for the MMMM ride and I'm very keen to find a cheaper tyre that performs well on the 990s !
Apologies for the pics: I've just had a shit of a time trying to figure out how to upload them now and I've ended up with some here that I don't want and couldn't upload some I did want  . Not easy like other sites... Anyway, the ones with the tyre on the rim are after last week and the ones without the rim are prior to fitting the tyre ( = about 1000km use) .
Cheers

I'm not sure if this has been covered and i'm not going to wade through 84 pages to look but has anyone had experience with the Karoo T 21" fronts. I used the tube type Karoo's fronts in Alaska and thought they were quite good and am looking at the karoo T tubeliss 21" for the GS. The pics show it as a totally different looking tyre though.

Bump the pressure of them up to 30 PSI for extended highway or gravel km's. Can almost double the life of the tyre compared to 22psi. Not a big drop in grip on gravel rds. For dirt tracks you'd want to drop back to 18-20 psi.

All I can say is, Though internet reviews look on these favorably, - I have never used a Adventure tyre in my life.
Part of the process of building a business is getting your product out there, and getting feedback from those that use the items. This is partly what this offer is about.
Hopefully one day - You can tell me how it compares with the Mitas.
Thanks.

you don't get the same k's out of them (softer compound), but they hang on in the wet & on tar great on the metal
best i've got out of Eo 7's 23000, Eo 9's 9500 being gentle on them
the Heidenau 7500 but it was given a very hard time so would get more treated better

Cruiser, Mitas E07's could suit - longevity - awesome grip on tar - shingle good - single track wet mud/grass poor (front tyre anyway but not designed for that purpose, could go E09)

The 19" front on the F650 cuts down the options a bit, I'd maybe try a Continental TKC80 front / Mitas EO-7 rear. If you're not doing too many miles a TKC80 would give some more dirt grip on the back too but the E0-7 will last heaps longer for much less $$$.
I used to use a TKC on the front, but the D605 is cheaper & seems to give very similar performance, I don't think they come in 19" tho.
Cheers

Ok at the moment running some DOT nobblies on my bike which are great but since most of my riding is done on the road lookng for somthing that is a bit more road friendly but will also suit my purpose for going off road ocassionaly. Now I have a specfic place I go offroad and thats along the Karapoti Trail in the Akatarawas. So what I was wondering what tire would be best suited to handle the Akatarawas tracks whilst maybe giving me a bit more durability on the road. All suggestions welcome

Agreed. When newish the 07s have as much grip as the chunkier 09's they last for a very long time. I have been running dunlop 606s on the front which are grippy & aggressive & give a long life & E07's on the back. This is a popular choice.

I've decided to buy a pair of Heidenau K60's for my F650GS Apparently they can be run with or without tubes. What are your thoughts about the pros and cons of going with tubes ?
Maybe less likely to puncture vs extra cost and weight ? Or is there more to it than that ?
My intention is adventure riding with a probable split of about 40% seal, 40% gravel and 20% off-road.

My 2000 F650GS had spoked wheels so needed tubes no matter what tyre I put on when I owned it.
My current ride has spoked rims too so same story.
Most the bigger BMWs spoked rims have the spokes outside the tyre area so use tubeless.
I understand that there can be a bead issue with mismatching tubeless and tubed tyres to their respective rims. I guess the bead won't be an issue with a universally fitting tyre as you say the tyre you're interested in is, but if you have spokes that go to the inside of the well area on the rim then you will probably still need to use tubes inside the tyre.
BMCruiser
1st September 2010, 22:25
Thanks Transalper, I hadn't thought about the spokes issue. It's pretty obvious really that a standard spoked wheel won't hold air without a tube. I should have realised that :o
My cruiser has external spokes so it can run tubeless but the GS has centre mounted spokes so I will need tubes.

Thanks for trying the Heidenau's BMC.
I look forward to a open and honest review on them later in the year.
Just to give my thoughts on tube or tubeless. In my limited experience, I would think a tubed tyre is more likely to get puncture than tubeless. Any nail / screw that gets threw the tread, and penetrates the inner carcass of the tyre would then puncture the tube, allowing a loss of pressure out through the wire spoke joints.
But on the tubeless, that same nail would often seal itself against the rubber where it penetrates, allowing pressure to be retained, at least till you get home and notice it.
The other issue, (which doesn't affect you guys as much), is the heating up of the tyre on tarmac. Having a tube in would I think allow your tyre to heat up quicker, as the tube insulates the tyre somewhat from the air inside it. That air in the tube takes longer to heat as it's a slower process of transference from the tyre to the air in the tube. So in one lap of the race track (for those of us without tyre warmers.......
Ar, I've lost you there now haven't I ?!
Just my thoughts.
Others with experience can tell me if I'm wrong.

You're wrong
If you are riding mostly on the road or good gravel then I agree with most of what you have written. But you are dealing with adventure bike here, not road race bikes. Most adventure bikes run spoked wheels which precludes tubeless (unless you run exotic tubliss systems, or have the BMW system).
Then there is a question of pressures. As soon as conditions deteriorate its great to be able to drop pressures, to get more grip. Tubeless tyres have limitations in terms of how much you can drop the pressures to. Tube type tyres can go much lower & allow you to option of running rim locks, to stop the tyre spinning. However as a balance, tube type tyres can have issues with pinch flats where they are running low pressures in (primarily) rocky terrain.
Tubeless tyres can be more problematic to repair in rough conditions. Usually those types of issues are because of cuts or slashes to the tyre. Those punctures cannot always be repaired with the plugs, and the tyres aen't so easy to remove.
Tube type rims are easier to replace or repair. Try repairing a tubeless BMW spoked wheel. Not many wheel builders will touch them..

Most manufacturers recommended downgrading the speed rating by one when tubeless tyres are fitted with tubes. Said to be due to increased heat build-up from the tube rubbing against the inside of the tyre - tubeless tyres are often ridged internally, unlike tube-type tyres.
For field repair, a tube-type rim, tyre & tube wins hands down.

Heavy duty tube. Dropped the pressures a bit to reduce the stress on the tyre. Only seal on the way home. Was more worried about something poking in there. As it happens the split didn't get any larger, & the tube was good when I changed things in Wellington. We thought about putting a repair inside the tyre, but decided that might cause more issues.

I put my spare std 21" tube in, with a few crossed layers of duct tape inside the tyre, and a few layers on the tube at the same spot. Made it the 30(?)km home but kept it gentle. This split was through the cords and they had a sharp edge to them. IIRC it was along the tyre on the shoulder, not across like yours, so probably a lot more open/close flexing.

Don't use that shit. It makes a blloody big mess & smells strongly of chlorine. If you haven't found out why your tube died, then even if it does work (which is not often) it'll puncture again. Carry a tube. I'm sure you know how to repair a tyre, if not you need to learn. MarkS found this out the hard way at the last KCAR.

Not sure whether it has saved me getting a puncture or not. It may well have blocked up a small leak. who knows? How do you tell?

I used it to attempt to repair a small leak in a tube - stayed inflated for about 10 minutes . Then tried patching the tube but the patch only stayed on for a few hours before the slime got underneath it and lifted it off. New tube was required.
Slime might be ok for a tubeless tyre.

Personally I don't find worn knobbies a problem on the seal in the wet, as long as they aren't worn square/flat with a sharp shoulder.
Slime... in my experience not worth the hassle. It only works on pin holes; lots of my punctures have been slits from either pinch flats or lately glass, or nails tearing the tube. It makes repair nearly impossible.

My T63 wore very similar to your karoo. I'd recommend the mitas E09 personally. But I'm going to go for an E07.
cooneyr
29th September 2010, 15:12
I'd run a E09 over a MT21 for adv rides and a D606 over a T63 over a MT21 for mixed adv/trail. Problem is that the MT21 is the only one that acutally comes in the right size for a 690 (or 950) though the 690 could probably run a 130/80-18 (or equvalent) i.e. T63 or D606 or E09.
Of couse if you want full blooded trail/dual sport tyre the AC10 does come in the right size (120/90-18 is basically the same as 140/80-18 - I've got a AC10 and MT21 in the garrage) and is cheap as chips compared to any of the tyres above.

Yep I've used a set of those, then quite a few rears in combination with TKC80 fronts which worked well. The front is a bit roady for proper adv use but it stuck damn well on the tar & was acceptable on gravel if you didn't push it too much.
The rears stick really well on the tar too, & are great on the gravel when new, but they wear out pretty quick, well toasted by 4500km IIRC, 3 rears to a front
That's why I changed to the Mitas E0-7 as my fav all purpose rear, the E0-7's still have as much tread depth & bite on gravel at 6000km as the MT-70 did at 3000km. The harder compound of the E0-7 doesn't stick quite as well on the tar but it's not too bad considering they last twice as long.
$140 is pretty good, last I checked they were $170ish.
Cheers

I thought it had another 1000 km in it but after the Porika ride I see that the chip seal is actually wearing the wear indicators.
Apart from the wet clay on the Porika pylon track it hasn't given me any grief at all.
Once I've worn out this $10 E07 I think another 705 is going to go back on.
There's nicks and slices all over the carcass but small wonder knowing where it's been and what it's done.
The front is still mint.

Just had a TKC80 put on the back of the 950 this morning, I'm doing a durability test on it for my local dealer.
It'll get about 1200km's of seal this weekend to break it in.
KM's when the tyre went on 76547.

Just spent near on 2hrs changing over my front tire, got it done, managed to bugger the tube in the process,
Just took it to cycletreads so they can fix it. lesson learnt.
At least I know I can get the tire off if I needed when out on the road. But damn my hands are sore. :buggerd:

Ok, I cheated, started about page 72 and skimmed a bit.
I am at the moment riding about 90% road. And a bit of a cheap arse.
Seems like the Shinko 705s might be a good bet?
When I am off seal, it is most likely to be easy stuff. Gravel roads, nOOb friendly stuff.
So what other tyre might be a good one for mainly commuting on seal and the odd easy weekend fang off seal?

Suddenly the other direction is a real problem because you can't both brake _and_ take your foot off the peg: you really do have to get it right, coming to a stop balanced with feet up. If it goes pear-shaped, putting your brake foot out mid-slide creates more problems than it solves, but is highly entertaining for everyone watching.

Quite true, and back to tires its amazing how much it changes this trick. With the old T63 locking the rear was really easy but with AC10 its much harder. At slow speed that is. I also found that is easy to control the slide on hard packed gravel than in grass , and wet grass

I use to run D606's on the DR650 and really liked them. They didn't last very long unless you keep the pressures high. The recomended pressures for the DR were 20/22ish and the 606 rear would only last about 2000kms at that pressure. At 30ish the rear would last about 5/6000kms.
Cheers R
I'm now gunna test these on the 750....
I got 2500 out of the K760 before it was bald in the middle, the outside knobs were getting down too. I had got used to it "wandering" while riding over Takaka hill, and it had become too easy to lock up up under engine breaking.
So far I'm happy with the 606 on a wee ride out to French Pass and cafe Underground (including his "alternative access" driveway) in the dry

You've probably got a few more torques than the 650 which the D606's may not like but I still reckon they are a good tyre while they last. I'd run them on a 650 or less but I'd never put them on a bigger bike (S10 or 950) cause it would mean $ goes :bye:

Fractionally more torque and loads more power, both higher in the rev range.
Up to about 5000rpm the 650 has more torque.
But when the power comes in, combined with the extra weight of the 750, that's where tyre life is going to suffer...

I am gonna give them a go, way way cheaper than the TKC, but I haven't priced Mitas E09's 130/80/17 and 90/90/21

The Pirelli MT21 Rallycross tyres are a good deal at the moment. I know of four bikes heading south in Feb, they are all getting shode with the MT21 for the four week tour...

Ouch, yes, they are getting pricey. TKC80 at the moment though $264.60 for the rear and $189.00 for the front. It does make the Pirelli MT21 Rallycross a good buy..:)
130/90/17 $140.04 and the 90/90/21 $94.25 plus freight of course...Way cheaper though.
Heidenaus are pricey too at present...

My records show it as 40% dearer per km than the MT21 with no appreciable benefit for your extra money. T63 still the winner on grip & cost so far.
MT21 fronts have been $95 for years and years!

As soon as they loose their edge they're crap.
The front's are great.

The V rubber copy of the MT21 seems to last longer and costs less.

Well, I didn't, but seeing you offered...:) Ta...I guess, maybe they are made with left over rubber from Thai Condoms then....:) Do they clean them first?
T63 might be the go then......

LC8's a MT21'a are not a good mix. I burned up about 50% of one in 1000kms on the 2009 DB pre run while trying to be reasonably nice. It was blatantly obvious it was disappearing at an alarming rate. To get 4 weeks out of one the LC8 has better be ridden like it is a 250. I reckon the E07 has a much grip on SI soils and lasts much much better. Get a new E10 rear if they are available in size for the KTM's now.

1x road legal front, 1x road legal rear for big bikes in that lot.
JMJ I think the seller answered your question about the Michelin S12 rear (definitely not road legal) not the Michelin 21" front which appears to have dot markings.

I have been snatching up a few trademe tires, got a
Pirelli MT81, Metzler 6 days enduro and a michelin all in 140/80 18.
and a couple of fronts a halfworn karoo, a new metz 6 days enduro, and some non dot vee rubber.
So keep an eye on trademe, they pop-up sometimes. And I won't be snatching any for a while. :innocent:

About to lay down some money on a set of T63's. I was gonna get another set of my favoutrite D606 front & E07 rear. Will I get as much mileage outa the Michies? I must have gotten close to 10K outa the E07 rear.

I reckon you will get about 6k out of a rear, and I would stick to a d606 front cos a t63 front is not as aggresive as the rear t63. Almost a different sort of tyre.
I have t63 rear and d606 front and its a bloody good combo.

you will find the T63 front will hum a lot on the sealed roads..quite noisy..
but a great tire other wise.

Cool. You should be able to get a free set of 705 radials from Whites.
9,000km from the 120/70-17 rear to bald.
10,000km on the front and it looks half? worn.
Anything from 18-28psi.

8000ks out of my Shinko 705,s so far, another 1000 - 1500ks on the rear and plenty on the front. They have served me well and do the job offroad and they havent let go when scratching around on the seal. Wouldnt discount putting another set on for the price and size avalibilty. range 32 - 36 psi front. 30 - 40 psi rear.
