Not sure about this bonding thing you speak of Flyingcroc.:shifty:
Sad about the weather on Sunday, but good news for me. I should be able to travel north with the other Napierites, for the 30th Aug. Sounds like Wickle and Fridayflash have committed to this date too. All's good.

Alrighty then!So the Npierites are a coming up cool.
Dieseldick, you really have to have had a cup of Max Headroom's Licorice tea before you could even begin to understand th meaning behind the right of passage statement.
Ol Croc looked pretty green after that beverage, but he did swalla it!
Nick no offence mean't or intended mate.
It was most appreciated at the time and got us both safely back to civilisation.
Na I don't think we should make it mandatory Croc.Optional maybe, for those brave hearted souls.
Damn fine sipping licorice it was an all, in my humble opinion.
Looking forward to seeing a lot of names on that ride thread folks.

Turns out that the 800lb shorter fixed platform with the hinged (but supportable ramp) works as well as the longer 1000lb one.:bleh: If you want clearance to drop the whole front end off, you back her up, jack her up, clamp the rear wheel, remove the hinged ramp then a couple of bolts from the triple tree and Hey Presto!.. the front end falls off and breaks yer toe  But!.. she's all in one peice rather than a dozen, so you can pop it back in nice and easy after yer've replaced Psyguy's steering bearings:laugh:.
or front end in and wheel raised off the hinged ramp section means no load on it, or chuck a jack under the hinged ramp section and she's all solid and can be loaded ok.
[edit] just looked again and see a way to install a couple of sliding rails to support the hinged ramp back to the main rails
The important thing to remember is, not to use the side stand to hold the bike upright on the platform unless you are a very heavy sleeper

I even would have pushed buy-now if I had seen it soon enough.
What an easy resto on a fast appreciating fast classic bike.
Used to get a double to work (circa 1987- impoverished apprentice) on the back of one of those in original poo brown, and so was my Y-fronts some days. Remember going over the harbour bridge at well over the ton 2-up and the front lifting at the peak of the bridge.

LOL Hi Caseye, I moved from Auckland to the Hawkes Bay 3 years ago now but up until then I must admit I actually thought the whole of NZ was like Auck's weather wise lol. But, to be fair and not be too unkind...Auckland can throw some pretty fantastic sunny days itself :2thumbsup

Any Guzzi made between 1976 and 1992 is period correct, they did not actually change anything from the basic bike they started with, just kept punching it out but still the same bike, same frame, same 18' wheels. And then wondered why no one was buying them any more. and nearly went out of business- a mirror of the British bike industry but with longer lunch breaks and vino.
I might bring one other along, I have ridden with him before and he is fine, his bike's a 1980...

sounds like my XS650......the basic motor never changed in the 20 odd years it was in production...which is good for parts but bad because people keep chopping them around and it is hard to find one with the original motor in the original frame...

Yeah mate, that was me... nice and slow on the wet seal in case some dickwad decided to cut me off. Have you got your carbs sorted out yet?
Yes they seem OK now -upped the main jet size and reverted back to std airbox/filter. The carbs are VM30SS on a later head (std VM26SS) - had a few frustrations getting them sorted. Still has a flat spot mid range then chimes in like a vacuum secondary. C ya

It's been freezing, damp and difficult in the shed the last week.
But progress has been made.
On target for the BTPR ride 30th.
Starting to actually look like a motorcycle now.
Some issues to sort and I am getting a mobile auto sparky in the next few days to hook up the main loom to the switchgear and instruments. I gave up with old school Guzzi switchgear, it was crap back then and is still crap now- no matter what I try and do to it. I have both switch blocks from a 1991 LeMans that will end up on the finished bike. The switchs are black with orangey-red buttons, so they might look alright with the red/black paint job. Unfortunately they do not look 'period' which I am bummed about, better than breaking down or not being able to start it I guess.
I have not kept track of my hours on this build, but just the carbs took 11 hours this week to strip, reco and fully polish
And another 5 hours making the exhaust parts that never showed up with my "full system"
It's nice and the meki period race system, but 8 months waiting, cash up front, and the waiting, the waiting... Bloody Italians

Back in the day that there motor was considered pretty grunty.
It had some racing success, there was even 2 different straight cut clusters and a factory race kit (the exhaust on mine is part of that kit) for it.
Plus for the times, it went around corners and stopped pretty well too.
But I agree on the layout, like BMWs it suffers none of the cooling issues inherent with Ducati, HD and other air cooled V-twin configurations.

Maybe not. My pipes and shocks are original. I'll have a look at the papers to be sure. I got the rego papers with one of the two I bought. The other (same paint colours and sequential engine and almost frame numbers) was too far gone to warrant restoration. Psy is going to use most of the engine, the frame and covers got binned and I have most of the rest left as questionable spares.

I just passed on a set with a couple of small holes and minor pitting for $100US + about $160US shipping.
http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b182/renobruce/Pipe/
As you can see they aren't too bad but not sufficiently better than mine to warrant the cost. I Want to hold out for a better set and spend 2 - 3 x as much on the pipes as needed to get seriously good ones. Though I understand they can go for up to $600 US. Did you know you can still buy them NOS from many online dealers? I gave up figuring the cost as I started adding up the separate components and became depressed:laugh:
btw.. re the ebay thing. I won a pair of rotors for U$13 but cost another U$55 in shipping... still cheap though.

Removed the head after work on Monday to fix the x threaded plug and it is having threaded inserts put into all 4 holes and have ordered from Z1 carb parts, Pingel pet cock and will take it to a specialist tuner whe all back and running. Probably install K&N pods also i think as air boxes are all wrong fit on the 48mm spigots on my VM30 carbs.
Hope to make the BFTP anni ride. Will pods work with std pipes? If anyone has good 4-1 i'd be intersted in price as it'd be good to lose the weight and gain some noise.

Hope you get it sorted out. From what I have heard, you would need to re-jet the carbs for use with a 4-1 or 4-2 when changing to pods. Was I you I'd ask popsylar or one of the other regs at GSR... they know this stuff inside out.

Will pods work with std pipes? If anyone has good 4-1 i'd be intersted in price as it'd be good to lose the weight and gain some noise.
TW
pods should work fine with the standard pipe but you are likely to lose some bottom end torque and gain a little top end power.
with vm carbs you have a chance of not needing new pilot jets as those carbs allow for more adjustment than cv carbs.
if you go to 4-1 exhaust then definitely need to up the jets.
i run 4-1 with stock jets but i can tell that the engine could us a bit more petrol at high revs when i whack open the throttle.
for the exact jet sizes i hear recomendations to best use dynajet kit (rather than experiment with various sizes that can be costly and give headaches).
i have 4-1 headers on trademe at the moment, but they need a mufler and a cosmetic overhaul.

Quo- best to make all the changes you are going to make, then get it dialed in. Hi flow air cleaners make it run lean if the exhaust gasses are freer flowing as well. Otherwise you will not really make much noticable difference by just doing that. And do you know how much  K&N  filters cost?? A bloody arm and both legs mate!
I would estimate that for 4 :love:K&N  filters would be over $350
Bummer to hear you had fouling again, I bet you were just relaxing after a trouble free ride too... :scooter:
Good to hear you are going to get all 4 plug threads done, may as well while the head is off.

Hi guys - barely made it home Sunday due to fouled plugs again once i got back into traffic.
TW
Hi StatusQuo - I can give you some help on jetting your VM carbs. First try and find a stock airbox and mod it to suite your carbs. I believe that the GS850 CV airbox will have rubber boots around 48 mm on their BS32 carbs. I'm not sure how much work would be involved in mating up the box mounts to your 1000, but probably far less than the time to tune in the pods/4-1 combo.
If you go down the pods track, you'll be forever trying to get rid of stumbles either just off the pilots or during the needle operation. If you must go pods, do as Psyguy suggested, buy a DJ kit and give yourself a chance of getting the jetting close. Those kits have the right shaped needles needed to correct leanness caused by the freer flowing pods.
Let me know if I can help you with ball park jet sizes.

When I put the Cycleworks 4-into-1 on my 1100 I never touched the carb jetting. Air filter is a K&N in the standard airbox. Power delivery is as seamless as with the standard exhaust (which was pretty free-flowing due to all the rust holes) and standard foam filter.

Yeah, sometimes you don't need to change jetting after a 4-1 fit up when still using the stock airbox . The Cycle Works pipes seem to vary a bit in the sizing of the pipe and cones after the collector. That's the case with the slash pipes anyway. Is yours a slash or does it have a can attached?
Sometimes the bikes are running slightly rich in one part of the rev range in stock trim, and this changes when a 4-1 is used. But overall there doesn't seem to be any substantial difference.

Well, what do you say about a day out of the box like today.
Brilliant sunshine 1st thing, no rain all day.
Great company, excellent Coffee and B and E's at the JMNK's pad.
Roads from Heaven to ride on and all this while in convoy with some Ulysesses and the Waikato Laxed Out Riders group.
AWESOME only just begins to cover it.
The coveted STICKETS have been stucketed to every attending BFTP machine and those in line for more STICKETS due to their rides attended got their quota's filled.
They look GREAT our BFTP stickets do.
Cheers Sharon for that little spelling mistook that has catapulted our stickets into the realms of etheral beauty and divineness, others attending todays rides wanted these highly sought after stickets, but alas unless on period bikes it was Sorry! no can do!
Kaiaua pub once again had many bikes round back in the garden bar, I thought everyone who went there knew to ride round back and park beside your umbrellaed table in their very nice and spacious Garden bar.
Seems not, so now there are many who do.
The pubs grub came fast and well presented, though as in recent times the quantity was lacking!
Once this little point has been rectified I'll again suggest to the SATNR riders that we should go back there.
Many other groups of riders were at the Kaiaua pub and the fish an chup shop but room was at a premium so I shifted our lot behind the pub, we got served much faster and considerably cheaper than those waiting for 1/2 an hour or more at the fush shop and of course we were able to imbide a bevvy or two during our meals.
Meet many people, put faces to names and generally had a great time with the different groups.
MOM if your out there reading this we sat beside each other and I'm sorry I didn't realise it was you, we've exchanged many words here on KB and I am truley sorry for not taking the chance to say Hi in person, another time I hope.
Your words re the ride organisers mission statement re going home hit home with those of us attending from the BFTP group.
2 of our members were offered trained mentor advice re their riding skills or lack thereoff, he he he.
One was so traumatised that he needed coffee when we stopped in Dorkland. The other was not asked if there had been any mitigating circumstances. Had that been done there was in fact an answer which may have lead to another rider being more severely mentored.
Apart from a couple of minor niggles we all reported a great days riding and an enthusiasm to repeat this expereince again, asap.
For those who didn't attend, "DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT ASKING FOR stickets FOR THIS RIDEK! lol.
We missed some old mates today, who didn't make the start line and to them, well guys and gilrs it really was one out of the box.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. Sorry for not responding sooner but i have been unable to dial in for 3 days as am on a remote dial up and cant get Vodafone reception at home. I have managed to cobble a reasonably good fitting airbox from 3 different GS ones i have collected and have a K&N airbox filter so will go down that road. Yes a set of new K & N pods was going to cost in excess of NZ$140 each so i quickly ended my interest in them. I will contact cycleworks re the 4-1. Current main jets are #112.5 not sure what the mid range jets are but as Psy said should be able to fiddle the fuel screws, side air screws and needle height to get it right, however i will probably get a shop/dyno tune. I also have a set of what i believe are GS1000S cams that came with the head and i am considering installing (0.5mm extra lobe height). I havent been able to find exact set up recommnedations for these carbs as they dont appear in any manuals for this model. I.E. early GS but has later head with larger inlet ports, these VM30? slide carbs and S cams. To date i havent run it with the S cams. These carbs to look at are like std 26/28mm VM's but taller with larger spigots and a Mikuni smoothbore type brass float and larger bowl assembly. The std VM28 carb bowl gaskets are not wide enough so have made my own. Originally the bike had the std VM26 set up perhaps i should have left it but the spare head i bought had much better carbs and inlet manifolds plus more go potential.

you can get a set of four k&n pods at z1enterprises for US$150. postage by usps first class mail US$20 or so.
running the carbs that you can't find specs for is likely to be a major problem when it comes to tuning so i'd look up the gsr forum and see what options have been tried and tested. slightly different cams should not require major change at the carbs.
main jet on the 850 (and i think the 1100 as well) is 115 (mind you that is on the cv carbs).

If you're going to run the VM30 carbs your main jet will be around 120 with a stock airbox. If you fit the S cams with these carbs you'll gain more top end at the expense of the lower mid range. VM29 Smoothbore needles are usually 5DL31, probably a good starting point for your setup.
Cycleworks slash pipe should work well with your set up.

Yeah gidday ive been down the GS forum road many times and have some good data to work with. Also TFB in Perth has some good info on these, although not specific. The KN tapered pods with chrome ends are $160 each ex AMPS (NZ sole distributor and probably heavily marked up) or $130 each ex Oz landed. Yes cheaper no doubt ex USA but anyway have decided to stay with the box. As I said i am going to get it set up on a dyno so all good. just waiting for the gaskets etc to put it back together now. Hey Croc i dont need the pods u have now but am happy to reimburse you for them appreciate the thought. Cheers Tai

Should be, I thought I was there, now I am backwards. From a complete never turned over bike this has happened.
Take a deep breath now..........:shit:......... ok.
Put the pit pike tank on the main frame tube, plug in the fuel tubes and turn on the tap. Petrol in the carbs, oh, petrol on the floor.
:weep:
Run for rags, wipe fuel off engine and starter motor, also wipe off non petrol resistant paint from starter motor.
Disconnect fuel tank, pull bowl of l/h carb. Needle and seats are weirdly
NOT included in the Dellorto recon kits, even though with a rubber tip, it is a consumable... :brick:
Ring the Island Guru. Yes he has one 2.70 needle valve. Nice, only one is leaking. Put it in the post.
Needle arrives Monday morning. Fitted it, put the carb back on. Test carbs, the other carb is now sticking on the throttle return. Pull r/h carb apart and check slides etck, all looks ok but the spring is sad. Ring Island Guru again, "got a 36mm double pumper spring?" - "Yes they are on order, 3 weeks"
Ahhhhhhhh
:crybaby:
Ok, no biggie, so its a bit slow to return, that should not be vital. Put r/h carb back together and back on the bike. Fuel hooked up, press the button.. motor turns over with a strain and the battery dies. Pull the plugs out, hook in the timing light and spin her up again a bit faster, no spark on the l/h cyl.
Cross the electronic plate plugs and still no spark, so it's not the pick up. Pull off the l/h coil and replace from stock. Test- no spark. Pull apart lead and resistor, test with another lead, no spark.
Dash down the road to the auto sparkie and buy a new battery. They don't have a ready to go in my size (ummm XL thanks) so they give me the shell and acid. Take it home and fill, sweet, plug in the battery charger, the expensive trickel charger, and it fucks out. Dask across to the girlfriends house to borrow back my old charger and hooked up the new battery for overnight charging.
Last thing it can be is after coil, lead, connectors and wiring if it's not the pickup is the back box Dyna 3.
Ring AMPS (Dyna Importer) and blast there and buy another unit. Came home and hooked it in. Get spark in poth pots:done:, then spark in the black box and it cooks.
Remove complete electronic ignition unit from the frame and dizzy and throw on the garage floor.
Find steel handled mini-slege and pulverize any and all remains of electronic ignition and tear the Dyna 3 Sticket from toolbox.:2guns:
Later, calmer inspection showed clear coat had covered the engine case where I earthed the black box even though I checked continuity and it was all .000 reading.<_<
Go deeep deeeep into the parts bins and piece by piece, screw by screw make up a twin points plate and dual resistors and fit the bike and wire in.
Static timed to the r/h pot and then fitted the new battery and fuel. Back to the fucking dark ages it is then.
:brick:
Still spinning over pretty slowly. New engine is pretty tight but enough to tell there is spark to both pots.:kick:
Timing could be way out, the new billet clutch and ring gear has no marks. I tried to transfer some off the old flywheel but was not 100% sure exactly.
If I can get the engine to turn over fast enough I can twist the dizzy while she is spinning and fluke the right spot to fire.
Will hook up some jumpers to the ute in the morning and begin trial and error to see if I can get it to fire up and at least idle.
If it still turns over too slow I have a reduction geared starter on my other bike so I can switch them up and try that as well.
I hope that answers your question caseye?

The reason it was beating me around the head a bit was a combination of things, if it were one or two things kaput I would have sussed it sooner.
So it starts up fine. The planatery geared starter I robbed off my Mk2 spun it at a suitable speed to fire. It would have started off the 1970's Bosch starter had all my planets been perfectly in alignment, but they were far from that.
Once I heard the first fire (and there was only one wee murmer firstly) it was only a short sprint to idling. Set the idle and mixture and balanced them.
It was impressive that only new bikes really have had my electronic balancer exactly on one bar of the LED, which indicates optimum balance. She is on optimum balance. Before the resto, it was hovering over 3 bars- the best I could get it no matter what.
So that is encouraging.
Still stuck with the failed return springs in the carbs, yeah it's springs now as both do not return properly. 2 1/2 week wait for them....
So I will set the timing with a strobe tomorrow, it is statically set at the moment but Guzzi's need full advance for correct setting.
To do that I will have to mark the flywheel because the aftermarket clutch housing is so tiny you can't see it from the timing inspection port. But from setting up the engine I have exact TDC for the right cyl. It is a process of counting gear teeth from that mark to get full advance for the R/H pot, then counting more all the way around to the L/H timing marks working off the old flywheel markings and converting that into ring gear teeth.
For some reason the rev counter is not working, could be the cable not engaging in the guages or engine, I set the idle rpm off the balancer function but will need it going to precisely hit full advance at 4,200rpm because I don't want to accidently wring it's neck on a fresh engine, 4 grand is heaps under no load
Of course the springs are required for that, unless with some careful cable routing I can get the carbs, or at least one (I can return one manually with me finger)returning to idle it will be possible, if not I just have to wait...
Hope that answers your question caseye

Don't get me wrong, Guzzis are pretty much up there with BMW when it comes to churning out big kms. The small valve engines go and go and go (850-T3, 1000SP, Californicator, etc) but bikes like the Mk1 & 2 Lemons were pretty highly strung. For a start they came out with velocity stacks as standard, no air cleaners!
:sherlock:Here is a quote from the Mk1 LeMans Factory Owner's Handbook. Page one, paragraph one:
"Due to its exceptionally high feature, this motorcycle can be considered as in the racing machine class and as such has to be ridden in a sportsmanlike way.
For this reason it has met the favour of many motorcycle fans but, same as for all racing bikes, it has to be used accordingly.
For instance, if the twist grip is not used correctly in accordance with the engine revolutions, there might be an excess of fuel which is ejected by the carburettors.
It is obvious that if in such conditions the engine backfires, the risk of a fire is quite considerable"
:sherlock:Let me translate that Italian-into-English:
If you don't ride it like a man and stop being a pussy, it will vomit fuel all over you and set you on fire:killingme
Of course, that is why we love the Mk1 so much:love:
They just can't make a bike like that now.
Some would say good job.

I was inspired by what Moto Guzzi said in their literature....so I found the Ducati one....
Dear Sir,
We are very glad to welcome you among our clients, and feel sure that you will not fail to appreiciate the magnificent performances of the DUCATI motorcycles.
The Magnificent performances and reliability of our machines reflect the experience gained throughout many years of sucessful racing both on the track and the road.
In order to obtain the fine service that the Ducati machine is capable of giving, it is essential that the instructions contained in this book be religiously adhered to.
If these instructions are followed closely , particularly during the running in period of the machine, then you will be assured many years of trouble-free enjoyable riding.
We thank you and congradulate you on your wise choice of such a fine machine with unequalled performances.
DUCATI MECCANICA Spa.
:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
Reliaibility.....obviously relative to their other products.
I do however agree with the Magnificent Performances, usually me on trying to start it.

As for Lemans at Lemans, yes but European Champs not Grand Prix. Guzzi stopped racing soon after WW2 (with a wee dabble in the early 70's) so the only people racing them were privateers.

"Dear BMW Enthusiast,
The motorcycle is a constant challenge to a man; a challenge to experience the adventure of man's command over the machine - direct and unadulterated. Wind, weather and road conditions must be tackled and mastered anew - on every single occasion. And above all, the machine . . . .
You have chosen a BMW with its wonderfully refined, powerful twin cylinder horizontally opposed engine and shaft drive - "the greatest", as our American friends might say. We congratulate you on this decision.
Our Owner's Manual contains all the information you need to enjoy the unspoiled pleasure of riding this fine motorcycle, and also the care and attention needed to maintain the value of this precision machine. Please study the contents - in a very short time you will become familiar with the features of your BMW.
Now you can start to enjoy a quite exceptional experience: true riding pleasure - in dense traffic, on narrow winding mountain roads, and along the endless concrete ribbon of the cross-country highway.
Sincerely yours.

Can't speak for Guzzi, but BMW road-bike engines were OHV up until 1993 when the oilhead "semi-overhead cam" design hit the market. There were BMW OHC engines used for racing back in the '50s & '60s. When fitted in the BMW racing sidecars of the '60s they were formidable, winning the majority of World Championships in that decade.
The OHC design in the '60s was just too expensive to consider for mass-production. The OHV road-bikes were already way too expensive for most folk, and bike production had slowed to a trickle by 1968 . . . .
