where you going this week , so i can pick a bike to ride, over hill motard , or flats road bike ????
Ducky848
15th October 2008, 08:42
Hmm, I'll be skipping a week or few again. *sigh* Same running-too-rich/carbs-need-work issues as I had before.
Think I'll learn how to do carbs myself this time, sick of spending big $$s at shops just to have things back to not-working 3 or 4 months later. Might pop by (on my reliable bike - has pedals ) to say hi.
I'm no expert but if you've had the carbs tuned and fresh filter it may be worth checking your ignition system, could be a faulty coil / cdi etc causing a loss of spark and hence unburnt fuel / misfire. The early gsxr's had problems with this from memory...
Pull your carbs and check the condition of the needles and seats. General vibration will wear these parts and cause a richer mixture. If they are in good nick adjust the needles one step leaner, in particular if its stumbling around the low/midrange but then seems to come right up top (as it climbs onto the main jets).
Coils tend to show weaknesses and miss in the upper RPM range. If its doing that it would pay to get them properly tested under load, or pick up a couple of replacements from a wrecker and start swaping the existing ones out.
CDI problems suck, they are sometimes very difficult to pinpoint and can do all sorts of odd things. Personally I would look at everything else first.

where you going this week , so i can pick a bike to ride, over hill motard , or flats road bike ????Typically it appears to be decided at the carpark, based on numbers, weather etc. Given previous behaviour patterns, I'd take a guess and say we'll be heading to Godley House tonight. Bit of a short trip, hope we take an extended route to get there, given the nice weather we're having.

Won't be doing the ride tonight... infact I wont be doing any wednesday night rides till feb next year! Exams are on, so the bike must stay in the garage. :weep:

Yeah, somewhere after the Wheatsheaf the RGV wouldn't pull under load :( On the way back, just before the Governors Bay pub, it sorted itself out... bizzare. Felt like a blocked main jet, but after last weeks raping, it may have disloged a bit of carbon in the exhaust and blocked it temporarily. I'll strip it on Saturday and have fish about... must be time to clean my powervalves again anyway. Good thing I was going slow though, the cyclist with your numberplate was able to flag me down.

Oh, and the front axle tool for the Duke, guess we could machine one... do you have a picture of what the genuine article looks like? I'm guessing a bit of rod, machined down to fit inside the axle, then put a cross pin in it? Queer idea, Ducati can shove that up their bums.

What a night!
The ride was fun, have to get use to the bike again as with the new shocks its a tad stiffer in the suspension and the cornering is definatly different.
One carb was running a bit lean as she was fluffing at idle, didnt effect top end power but didnt sound right at idle.
Discovered I had routed the Acc cable wrong and on full right lock it opened the trottle! Embarresing in company. But thats the easy fix of an enventfull night for me:dodge:
Didnt get home till 12pm+!
The XS went ok .....for most of the night!
1st..Lost power to my tail light, wireing fault..:oi-grr:
2nd.. right hand side cover fell off somewhere between CHCH and home...FOOKIN HELL.It was only painted last month!Any one know of a right hand side cover to fit an Yamaha 79 XS1100F?
3rd...One head light decided to stop working from woodend , then came back on at the Omahi saddle.....Because my lights were falling over one by one it was a very slow ride home . I did not want to go anymore than about 50kph incase the other light decided to fail, out on the open road that would have been instant black out!!:buggerd:
4th ... The bag on my forks that contains the wiring loom decided it wanted to go on a holiday. Broke the strap holding it on. Cheap China vynal, need to get a real leather bag me thinks.:argh:
So all the fun of riding an older bike lol. things sometimes fall off, stop working or decide to just not do what they are meant to do.
But that gives the bike a personality.... and a night outside the shed cause I was pissed off with it .
but hey it still goes at the flick of the starter, so all those things that happened are cosmetic .Better than hitting the tarmac with ya bum

There might be no movement if the wheel bearings are shot, well yet.
If you really need a second opinion PM me and I can pop around to have a look, its always an option to replace them off hand, SKF bearings should have the correct units you just need the numbers off the bearings, and easy to do.

We did do this 2 or 3 times last summer. It's handy for the ones that live out this way, but as you said it's convenient for the ones in town to head for the port hills. It seems that most people like to stick to that side of town.:msn-wink:

I went on my first Wednesday night ride last week and really enjoyed it. I haven't ever ridden in a large group before so didn't know what to expect. I started off in the second group after deciding that I wasn't quite up to the one piece supersport level. I left with the second group and quickly had some bikes cruzing around me quite close on the ride over to sumner so I was pleased to be able to open it up a bit when we hit the hills.
I found the most benficial aspect of the ride being able to gauge my own riding skills against others and watching what they were and weren't doing in regard to lines, turn ins acceleration etc. It was also cool seeing how my bike handles compared to other bikes.
I am planning to come along tomorrow for a ride and a perve at the awesome range of bikes. Good shit topping almost 50 bikes.
Hope the weather is all good. Any ideas of a destination/ flight plan?

Lees valley - looking forward to trying that on sometime.
As for going North out of town (or South for that matter - let's have a pint in Ashburton ) is so fricking dull. Going to Greta Valley, having a beer and going back home is the biking equivalent of picking up a hot girl, getting her undressed, ready and waiting - and then do an about turn, leave and walk home through the rain. I ended up coming home after the car park, I was not very happy with the clutch, so a quick bleed later and it seems a little better the master cylinder was full of junk, my own fault I believed the dealer that when he said he had done the job so did not get it looked at when it was in for repairs even though it was offered, no the dealer is not the repairer.
Still not to happy with the clutch, I suspect the bike may have done a lot of idling with the clutch held or my practising the low speed balance skills have stressed it, will dismantle it and have a measure up.
On another note as happened a couple of time last year we had a wee but of confusion in the carpark, different routes for different folks, with different destinations, ok in a group like last weeks I can understand that but tonight it seems a bit difficult to figure. I propose we discuss the up coming week here, work out the destinations and routes before hand, ok the dirt guys wanted to go dirt, that I can understand, however the road guys broke up into two groups and went to different places that confused the hell outta me.

Mr Triple
23rd October 2008, 12:07
This year it does seem a little messy, we should put it up before the ride so everyone knows what they are doing.
Maybe we could have a list with destinations and we can vote on here before the ride. Everyone that would like to vote does so and the place with the most votes it is.
Duvauchelles
Wheatchief
Little River
Godley House
Greta Valley
Ashley Gorge
The length of the Summit Road
And if people would like to go to a pub after the ride it can be arranged at the BK car park.
Just my 2c worth.

Not that I come out on these often.. but to save bother why not write a long list of rides with various paths to each destination. Then just work the way down the list so the rides are even planned out months a head. Ie.. one week wheatsheaf via sumner and back through dyers. Then next week Ashley gorge is destination via such and such and return via such and such. Then maybe 10 weeks later wheatsheaf is on the list but via Gebbies pass and Sumner.
Does mean the "organisers" need to make up a list. Then you could even post it up on the first post with the date.
Just an idea :)

Well, at least I knew where I was going :)
But there was a lot of people who couldn't find neither Dyer's Pass nor Duvauchelles. Actually, only four people got there - and we did a couple of nice detours as well. Hooray for gravel.
?
I counted 10ish bikes at wheatsheaf. good fire ,a beer. Spin a few tales , and home just on dark.
We went thru summner-lytt-wheatsheaf-halswell as planned. And other group went to duvauchelles and played night rider on the way home. Quess once evenings get lighter and warmer there will be less problems.

Hmm, I don't think any man would ever become to old for that sort of stuff. If they do, they ought to stay away from motorcycles that's for sure. When the basic reflexes are gone and all...

Gee, I hope your saddles didn't wear you out.
Anyway, when I put my earplugs in and my helmet on the plan was Duvauchelles over Dyers. I was slightly surprised to see a fairly large potion of people heading down Moorhouse towards Ferry Road. I gave you the benefit of the doubt though, thinking you'd consider the chosen route a bit too short...

Well after a late finish at work I managed to catch the group at the Wheatsheaf. Was glad to be out and about on Jessie.
I like the idea of deciding a route on here before we go. As for the Police monitoring this, they already know about the ride, where it leaves etc. They aint worried about us as long as they dont get to many reports about idiotic behaviour. I havent heard of it being a concern yet.
Which brings me to another idea. In welly, they have 2 rides- Wed Cruizy ride, and the Thursday-Real ride. Basicly the wed is for everyone just wanting a cruize, take there time, or are new. The thursdays was for the fast guys that want to go their pace, and not have to worry about a slow group. Phoenix said some guys would go to both, helping out those on the Wed ride, where some would only go to one or other. With the wed night getting so big it might be a way of spliting the group up. Thoughts?

For the Cruisy Wed ride us Welly lot always decide the route at the meeting place, often due to weather conditions (Rapa vs Coast) and how many L platers attend etc, but mostly because we enjoy the spontaneity of the last minute decision!
The Thurs ride mostly heads straight for the 'Tukas, everyone at their own pace (!) It is good to have the two options, as you point out, some folk do one, others do both.

If the route is organised on here first we will need to be on our best behaviour during the ride.......we are not alone on here.
Of course I'm not suggesting anyone here would dream of exceeding the speed limit
Wot, you mean there is a limit how fast you can go! And here I was thinking it was all power to weight ratio and gearing. hehe :innocent:

I'm not entirely clear on whether it actually was raining or not as I came out onto the flats from Little River. It certainly was gusty and there were particles in the beam from my headlight - it felt as a combination of rain and leaves but I wasn't wet when I got home...

Had a pleasant trip out after our stop where 2 folks discovered the benefit of fuelling before we leave a lesson learnt I think.
The trip home was unpleasant through Barrys Bay rain and leaves with some pretty strong wind gusts, the bike clicked over to 10,000 K on the way home, now the wee service light has come on.
Going to miss next week I believe, something else on will see closer to time.

Yer, great ride thanks guys. Thoroughly enjoyed it as usual. That felt like hail around Lake Forsythe, I could feel the impact through my jacket. Riding through the maelstrom of leaves and other airborne debris was fun - kinda like giving mother nature the big finger - "is that the best you can do" scenario. :finger:

Sounds like Nogos still cant get it right, they did the same to my workmates ZX9R, and after it had been returned to them to get 'sorted' bout 5 times they finally gave it back to him saying that if he breaks the speed limit that it wont be covered under warranty...
Seriously go see Ian and Rodger in at Just Motorcycles in NewBrighton (next to Harringtons) they will give you a good deal on fixing it and they will actually fix it properly and wont give any bullshit like alot of other rogue tractor mechanics out there...

Good ride last night:niceone: A good quite ride out through the tunnel around the bays over Gebbies Pass and onto Little River where we stopped for people to catch up.
Some people turned around at Little River and went back, so about 10ish went over the hill to the pub for a feed and chin wag. When the last of us left it was dark and a good little run over the hill again, which I find it a little harder in the dark but all good. Out on the other side of Little River the wind was kicking it's heels up, going around some of those sweepers you didn't know which way it was going to blow you (hate that) but all good. Ended up taking the long way home going out through Woodend Leithfield and back through Sefton and home. Ended up doing about 300ks for the night.:msn-wink:

Bet your glad you went now. Especially after that ride down the Lyttleton side of Evans Pass. That was magic.
A pretty uneventful night. 3 of us and a random van drove though a red light in town right infront of a police man, and I mis-judged a cars speed and pulled out infront of it.
No tickets or accidents caused by either incident so all's good.
Thanks for the great ride.

The trip there was great, even if we all got a bit separated. Weather was much better than anticipated. Stayed light for the trip home.
And something on the way back just clicked, I felt as if I was riding to the very best of my ability. Lets not go into what that says about my ability, but yes, an amazing ride.

Till a calf jumped in front of me. And then a pheasant.:wacko:Some animals just have a death wish, happens a lot on dirt roads.
Last night I ran over a big rabbit or Hare while exiting a bend on the climb up out of Purau Bay on the way to Port Levy. I guess it was partly thanks to the DR650s big wheel and long travel suspension, I thought I had only clipped or brushed it but Tim said it was inside out when the DR spat it out the back at him.
A calf on the other hand is not something I'd want to bump in to.:shit:
Do you remember what the two different settings were?
The one which the flash was used was just on fully automatic, the photo without the flash I don't specifically recall but obviously it was a non flash, slightly longer exposure pre-set scene mode shot. I was actually surprised it wasn't all motion blurred.

I've seen a dog run over by a bike too though. The dog didn't keep running.
Anyways, great ride last night. At the carpark I wasn't sure what the weather was going to do for us but when we got over the other side of the port hills it was magic. Good to see some new faces as always. See ya next week

Pic1 - Well, when we arrived at Duvauchelle we were only three, all adventurers and all with our wet weather gear on. I guess we all noticed the big dark cloud looming and took appropriate steps in our ride prep.
Pic2- After a short breather there we carried on over to Pigeon bay and up Starvation gully Rd to the top where as you can see it was lovely, warm and sunny. Ok no it wasn't, it was cold and very windy but dry with great views and sheep.
Pic3, 4 & 5- We descended back down Starvation Gully, about 1/4 way down Plug and Matt strayed in front of the camera.
Pic 5 - got to love those winding shingle decents.
Then we worked our way round more dirt roads to Port Levy where we picked up the seal again eventually getting to admire the lights of Lyttelton on the way down to Purau.
Pic6- Purau 9:30pm and now the weather really is good. No wind at all. Plug in the foreground with Lytteltons lights across the water.
After that it was a quiet cruise back round to Governors and over Dyers to get home.
Did see Flip (i think) cruising home the other direction on Dyers.
Good to meet Matt and have him along for the run.
Fish and chips and videos sounds like it would have been good too, but once on the bike and moving it's hard to quit.

How about doing set rides throughout the month to stop all the f*cking about at the car park. This will let late comers know where they can come and meet up if working late, as well as some stucture to the event.
eg 1st week of the month # Duvauchelle

3rd week #Akaroa
4th week #Godly heads

i agree.much as i hate to have everything organized all the time,it would be helpful to at least know where we are going and what route we are taking.i had my noob g/f with me and she had no clue where we were going at all and if we hadnt turned back due to the wind and rain i think she would have got lost anyway:confused:
phoenixgtr
20th November 2008, 08:29
Well this thing has gotten far bigger than I ever expected it to. Organising you lot is like trying to herd cats. :shit:
Our biggest problems are:
1. Noone can decide where they want to go, nor can they agree on a destination
2. People don't listen/participate when we're trying to decide a route.
So what ends up happening is people ride off in all sorts of directions, half of them don't know where they're supposed to be headed and it just all ends up a complete shambles.
I don't like the idea of planning out set rides for a few reasons:
1. You never know what the weathers going to do in Chch. It may be better to go one way than another because of the weather
2. You never know what sort of riders are going to show up
3. There's always people who want to go a different way
4. Theres now developed a group of offroaders who need catering for aswell
5. Spontaneity is the spice of life
However, I'd be willing to give it a go if enough people wanted to.
Personally, what I'd like to try is suggestions for a route on the thread the week prior and if you can't get on the thread then bring your "vote" to myself or Brent (JMemonic) at the carpark. Majority wins. (If there's a fairly evenly split vote we'd prob just end up splitting the group). Of course this would mean you'ld all have to make your minds up!!
To aid this all and to take from the "set route" idea I'm going to put up detailed explainations of the common routes on this thread that we take so when we say "Duvauchelles via Halswell" or whatever, everyone knows what we're talking about.
Thoughts?

Wouldn't exactly call the adventure crew 'off roaders' as they are a completely different bunch on non regoed bikes doing stuff that don't even resemble a road, where as we are still generally using sealed and paper roads be they shingle, dirt or grass etc.
Also wouldn't worry too much about us for destinations as we tend to be able to split off taking care of ourselves and keeping an eye on each other. At the very least we can easily identify each other by the style of our bikes where as the road riders can't tell who's doing what in two road groups.
Yesterday, we went with the road crew to Duvauchelle (as far as they went anyway) then diverted twice on the rest of the way there. After that even if the road crew were at the hotel we would have cut the socialising short and just carried on to do our own thing as in after the main ride.
Whatever happens I think something needs to be well and truly arranged prior to the meet, even if there's always two route/destination options, 1 standing/set one and 1 varying one.
Might need to setup some kind of whiteboard with details on it at the carpark.

Agreed. We tend to know where the real roads (gravel) are that work in with the chosen destination. If all else fails we will make up our own destination.

we are adventurers :bleh:
:woohoo:absolutely!! adventurers we are lol
Agreed. We tend to know where the real roads (gravel) are that work in with the chosen destination. If all else fails we will make up our own destination.
We can do it all !!:devil2:
I really want to give it a go.
Give tenzing a go,or you can use the DR anytime:scooter:
I normally do Duvaucelles wether that is the destination or not, and I never find it hard to get a group to join me. Maybe the Duvaucelles crew cause half the trouble :devil2: we never listen cos we know where we are going anyway and then some people are bound to follow us...:chase:
So... if you don't want to go to Duvaucelles, don't follow me :D:cool:
but ....but variety is the spice of life!!:blip:

Steve I think that you would be the perfect person to look at a Thursday night ride for the faster crew (I mentioned this before). U tend to be at the front of the pack and like to head to duvauchelle, so maybe creating a Thurs ride to cater for the likes of you might help sort the wed ride out a bit. Obviously the wed ride would do the duvauchelle run now and then but not every week.
Just a suggestion!

lol who cares wher we all go, its mint catching up with people at the start, and im always going to head over the hills regardless of what everone else is doing, and as for the faster group on another night, why? they will end up at the front doing their own thing anyway.....we have mint hills 5 mins away from town why waste them!!!!

Have to agree with that, there is a lot of long straight riding going any other direction, and the port hills cater for road bikes and "adventurers" alike.
I guess bikers are just born to be radicals - chaos wafting in their wake.
Duvauchelles really is the premium destination for all, and perhaps should be the "default", and any alternative destination for anti-duvauchellians can be debated in the car park??
I vote to keep it to just one night per week.

And it doesnt get any easier.........**looks agreeingly at Qkchk**
as someone who regularly-ish attends both Auckland and Christchurch rides :innocent:i have to say that a little organization is inevitable unless chaos is what we are all looking for.personally i get enough of that at work.
i have to say the ATNR s seem pretty well organised and i am sure that didnt happen overnight,or by accident
so yeah maybe people should have a choice of routes if needed but then stick to them?

I like doing other rides to other places, but I _really_ don't like the peak traffic going out of town on Wed nights, so I generally prefer to go around the Bays.
Duvuchelles is a bit far for me every Wed, but I'd be happy going to Little River and then coming back via Wheatsheaf/Governors Bay and Lyttelton ... maybe the 'slower' group could include this as an option?
I don't see anything wrong with doing the same run each week; practice makes perfect, and I am less likely to get lost :)

As I suggested once, if there are people concerned about organisation of rides -
someone needs to grab a calendar, for every Wednesday write a destination in and way the group is getting there.
Post up the filled in calendar.
If people don't like the plan for that day then they don't need to come. If weather is no good and nobody shows, well thats just one on the calendar that doesn't get done. With 30-40 people showing up as is, hardly an issue if even half those numbers decide they don't like the ride one week so don't show, but they all come the week after as it's something they do like the idea of.
Then there is no reason for people not to know whats going on, and nothing stopping people showing up and then going off with their own group if they decided to.

eh, im not a huge fan of the akaroa/devauchells GP
I much prefer evans pass, lyttelton, right around to diamond harbor.
I like the road better, i like the destination better, I like the beer that the destination has better, I like that I don't have to worry quite so much about gas or clothing.
diamond harbor should be default seeing as it almost is anyway.
this is all my opinion of course.

You should be just as worried about clothing going there as anywhere else. IMO too. Diamond Harbour is still a fair haul in bad (wet and/or cold) weather to get home again.

Hell Godley house is all of about 0.9km from my front door. Still I get a nice ride into town.

I like the social thing, I lead for 2 reasons: 1) No bugger can sort themselves out so I get impatient and go anyway and 2) I don't like passing through a slower pack of riders and leaving first avoids that.
Mrs El Stevo (being one of the slower ones) doesn't want to see a split to 2 days because even if we seperate on the road we meet up at the destination, and she also enjoys catching up with people that mostly fall into the 'fast' group.

I agree, I like to have a catch up at the start too, thats why I get there early. Even if the 'fast guys' ride on a different night you'll then have problems with the 'next fastest' group. I treat it as a social thing and I believe it will naturally split into groups of equal abilitys.
anti-duvauchellians
Ha ha, I love that term
Anyway, to summerise I think there should be more focus on the social aspect and less concern about riders ability, there will always be someone faster and someone slower than any given rider.
You don't see the faster riders asking the slower ones to ride on a different night do you?:done:

To state the obvious, people are individuals and tend to do what they want. It's damn near impossible to make everyone ride at the same pace:blink:

Implying that fast equals able is twisting my words a little but if we want to go down this road then consider this:
Does Rossi win races because of speed or because of ability?
My answer would be because of the speed produced because of his ability.
There is usually a connection there somewhere.

Hmm to quote Tristan on this one its like herding cats, some times worse than others.

Yeap that is a dam fine point you make sir.

As happens now except some folks seem to over rate their ability's, I dread the day that one of them actually proves that fact :(
Anyway, to summerise I think there should be more focus on the social aspect and less concern about riders ability, there will always be someone faster and someone slower than any given rider.
Again very valid, for me personally I enjoy the opportunity to shoot the breeze with everyone, get away from my normal life for a night, (I am still working on the pillion to come along). The Wednesday night rides are my social calendar, (god I am actually saying it, I have no social life), and thus would hate to see it split up into 2 nights.
You don't see the faster riders asking the slower ones to ride on a different night do you?:done:
Again a valid point, one I would like to add though is hows about some of those faster riders take a turn at sitting at the back, or mid way and then offering pointers, tips and tricks to the newer guys, simple things, like cornering lines, which I think from memory I once had a chat to Mrs El Stevo about.
Anyhow enough, I am going to try and stay out of the attempts at organising this, I will lend my loud voice at the start but after a few years of being involved in similar things and having done all the work setting up systems etc I have found the best way is to let things evolve naturally, and have folks figure things out for themselves, with a little encouragement in the right direction.
That all said, I wont be here next week, heading to the Burt Munro (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=68922&page=5)

I agree with you Steve, and I guess the reason I'm saying the faster group should be the one to change if it was going to occur is more because the Wed is surposed to be a cruize not a race, and as it is sometimes the slow group are arriving just as the fast group are ready to leave a destination. It was just a suggestion and otherwise status quo it is.
Like JM says if the faster group are happy hanging back a bit now and then helping out the slower team and waiting just a bit longer at the destination then its no probs!!:2thumbsup
Phoenix and I sat down and made maps which we will post up here soon of what oure regular rides are so that when we say Duvouchelles, or Summit Road, or DIamond harbour people have some idea of the exact route. Phoenix will get the links up here asap (Well as soon as we have Broadband back...)

Have a great time! I just want to say how much I have - as a newbie - appreciated all the work you guys and gals have put into the Wed rides - just basics like turning up under all conditions, from the beginning when there must have only be a few (?), until it has become the event that it is now.

Again - thank you Phoenix and Fireliv! And all others who stand up and be heard. I'm not talking for everyone, but I think we all appreciate the time and thought you guys put into this.
I'm not going to get involved as I've always been on some committee or something or other and it's really nice just to turn up and not do anything (although if anyone wants me to open a bank account and start accounting for the money we might make from this ride (membership, club fees etc) let me know  (Just kidding).
I come along with a cruisy attitude - don't sweat the small stuff, the most important thing is that we turn up - the meeting in the carpark is just great!
Those of us that want to go off and do our own thing do, and the main group usually attracts the main number of people. There is no way of controlling bikers - to my understanding we are a group of individuals and as soon as someone starts telling someone else what to do there will be a mutiny. :angry2:
I'm glad that when I first turned up people told me over and over again that I was responsible for riding within my own ability. In the beginning I felt guilty about holding others up (through their choice), but now I feel really comfortable going at my own snail pace now (faster on the straights now I have the Bonnie), and ok about turning up last or taking a shorter route. I haven't met many of the faster riders (elusive beast that they are!) which indicates that we are here mostly because we share the love of riding. There are no other hidden agendas, and that makes me for one, feel safe.
Ride on all - have a great weekend and see you at the BK on Wednesday.
