Gav, I've managed to complete Odlins on Trailwings on my DR (I did summersault the bike over my right shoulder on the way back up from the hut the first time in there but that was more my lack of experience/skill than the tyres - got off line and launched the front end up the side of a rut LOL!) so you'll be fine, altho its for sure more challenging than with brand new knobblies on!

Blame the tyres Dave always blame the tyres:bash:

I would be in for a ride this weekend, just as long as a Africa 750 with 50/50 tyres will get there. I'm in Upper Hutt

AndyMac had his T/A down Odlins to the hut on road tyres so you'll be fine & big bikes have been down there - Balrog has been down on his GS1150. Odlins isn't full of that slick yellow clay like the Pram Track; its more of a rocky kinda track so not as slippery even in the wet. It is challenging but wicked fun!

Meet times for tomorrows ride:
9.30 leaving "G.A.S." petrol station on SH1 in Waikanae (hope the coffee cart is open!)
then meeting up with others from the hutt side at the saddle/lookout/carpark/start of track at 9.45 -ish aim to head in just before 10:chase:

Just heard that a big group of quads are also heading down Odlins on sunday, so we have a support crew!!

So any idea HOW big the quad group is and what TIME they're headed in Odlins?

Its not a wide track and being in there with 20 or 30 quads might be a pain!

:msn-wink:

yes as dave says quads... we had a close call with quads on the pram track aye dave.. its ok if we all going in the same direction.... or are they mates of yours gav..leaving car park at same time.

Its at the summit, ie saddle(!) of the Akatarawa Road that runs from Upper Hutt to Waikanae (its the road Staglands is on!). You can't miss the car park, its on the south side of the road with big concrete blocks on the edge that looks west towards Waikanae.

Odlins Rd is the the "local" name for the 4wd track that runs off north from the summit - on your map it is probably called Waiotauru Rd which is its real name.

9.45 at the summit/track start.

The rumours of quads (that I started:doh:) maybe wildly exagerated!
Paul, who's coming with me, mentioned that his step father was heading in on his quad with his mates. I'll try and get more info when we meet up in the morning:niceone:

If track is too busy maybe an alternative could be the karapoti crossing? Discuss in the morning at the summit.

See you guys tomorrow:clap::clap::clap:

Ignore previous ideas of Karapoti then!

We'll all tuck in behind the supertanker:eek:

Same opinion as you Joe, I only really want to do Odlins as I've not it before.

Hopefully the weather forecast will continue to get it wrong...dry and 21 degrees here on the kapiti coast! bit different to last weeks weekend forecast:niceone:

Well it was another crackin ride on Odlins Road, great to meet the new riders and congrats to everyone who broke their Odlins cherry! And the weather pretty much held out for us which was a bonus!

I have to say it's definitely more cut up in there these days and the run back up to the saddle from the Hut was still challenging(and scary!) for me, but wicked fun nonetheless!

Next stop: tackling it from the Otaki Forks side!

Hope to see you guys again soon & thanks to everyone for a great day out!

gav24
16th August 2009, 18:44
Yeah, thanks for coming along guys. Great ride today.
The three of us had a true adventure ride on the alternative ride back...
Ended up at a fallen tree blocking the track a couple of K's in. No chainsaw so back up the hill, that I was glad we wouldnt have to ride up on the way down:wacko:
Anyway back up after a while pushing and shoving each other, past a 4wd that was stuck fast - no winch!!!! and the rescue team on the way down for it ...and eventually back to where we left you:clap:
then an easy ride back to the road:niceone:
Cool thing when down there and resting for a while, planning what to do about the tree; a Morepork flew in and landed only about 3 meters away from us, he stayed there for quite a while looking at us and hopping about the branches close to us, then he took off. Really great to see one in the day, that close as well:niceone:
Unfortunately none of us had a camera:rolleyes:
Look forward to the photos from the rest of the ride though.

Definate unfinished adventuring:niceone:

Reckon a new entrance could be down in reikorangi, up through the pine forest and up to Odlins road, back to the hut, then through to Otaki Forks...

...got a bit of research to do yet, and maybe a couple of axes taken along on the bikes to clear that bloody tree! But cant be sure that thats the right road yet, again more rekky's needed:banana:

Cheers for the shots Joe, great for reliving the days adventures after a bath, a belly full of food and getting the fire stoked up:niceone:

OK, not so much, but I'll be joining you'se fullas pretty soon (12 Oct) as I work full time out of Trentham and come back to Blenheim for the weekends. Plan is to commute on the Africa, parking it up in the covered long term park each weekend (unless anyone lives next to the airport and would accept a case or two of marlborough wine for bike parking??).

so yeah, in the height of summer I might just be up for the odd after-work jaunt during the week if anything's happenin!

New ride for Monday 24th August,

A bit of a posse is forming to chart a bit of new territory...:2guns:

Myself, Stormtrooper and PKKLR so far are planning on exploring 2 different areas:

1) First short trip is a different entry onto Odlins road from Reikiorangi, we tried it in the reverse direction (ie from the track to Reikiorangi) last weekend but werent too sure if we had the right track and ended up at a fallen tree so, it would be good to explore from the other end and see where it leads us...

2) Bit more of an adventure this one, potentially:Punk:, heading from Otaki forks to the Odlins road Hut, then down Odlins, and out onto the Aka's (or even Reikiorangi - depending on the results of 1)) Cant gaurentee too much about this one. Its shown as a walking track on my Terralink map, Otaki Forks road on Google maps, and on a short rekky from the hut last week it seems to be a track that is used by 4x4's occasionally. Seemed pretty grassy and not down to the stones like the rest of Odlins so ... better have a look see:laugh:

If all goes well then it could make Odlins into a great loop ride!

Any takers for a look on monday.

not wanting to rain on your parade....

My son and I have explored the Otaki Forks end and were told by the local DOC ranger there was no access - he turned up in a flash when he heard a couple of bikes go past his house.

My understanding is that the access from Riekiorangi to Odlins is initially via some private property (I think - off Rangiora Rd).

Happy to be proven wrong on both counts.

According to the guys at the DOC office in Waikanae (very helpful) - the only vehicular access is from the Aka's Rd summit/car park to the open area at the summit of Oldins Rd. Past that (down to the hut) is technically walking access only although they said they turn a blind eye if people stay on the main track and don't go past the hut.

If you guys want a fun ride - explore up behind Shannon (there is a neat nasty track off Tokomaru Valley Rd that claimed a few mirrors etc last time we were there.

gav24
20th August 2009, 17:30
Just revisited the terralink map and it look like you could be right. The difference between walking and vehicular tracks is pretty hard to spot: long dash compared to quite a long dash:blink: Plus when we tried to head down to Reikorangi, we met 3 different 4wd's so maybe there is alot of blind eye turning around that area?...

Although... there were some pretty fresh vehicle tracks after the hut, and the track looked to have only been kept open from the encroaching bush by those tell tale twin tyre tracks...

Will still head up and have a look on monday as the ride up to the forks is pretty good fun anyway.

But could you give any more details on the Shannon track as that could be the real adventure now on Monday:Punk:

I believe Mark is correct. I rode this route up to Odlins as part of a Mike Britton ride (Middle Earth ride I think) some years ago and as I recall we started by riding onto a farm drive then track then into the park from below.

hopefully someone else can give you better instructions than these....

go the end of Tokomaru Valley Rd (lots of logging debris) and turn around and head back. A few hundred metres back there is a sharp right turn. To the left of that turn a snotty track continues straight ahead and climbs fairly steeply. Follow this track until (hopefully) you end up somewhere near Tokumaru.

sorry - its not much - but its the best I can do

to get to the area Mark is talking about head towards the tararuas on Mangahao rd from shannon, the road turns to gravel soon after you pass the Mangahao power station, and Tokomarua valley road is a few Km in on your Left, you can also head up Mangahao rd as far as the top Dam. Well worth a look up there.

Just going to speak to a friend this afternoon who lives up the gorge (Otaki) about access to some of the tracks that run off to the north from over the suspension bridge - cant remember the name of the road at the moment. If access is possible will have a play up there.

If not we'll probably head up to Manakau and go into the tararuas from there, good looking track called "Thompsons" could be fun...

Will keep you posted via this thread. But definately a ride leaving Waikanae on monday morning, just who knows where...

gav24
22nd August 2009, 19:32
The ride planned for Monday, has now been bought forward to sunday - TOMORROW!

Partly due to some stuff coming up on our monday off, and mostly due to us all being frustrated that we were double-booked today and missing out on the Cnut Hill assault:(

So plan is to leave Waikanae G.A.S. station on SH1 at 9.20 ish in the morning and head up for a scout around Otaki Forks and then probably try and find the track that links the end of Kaitawa Road up the gorge to Ringawhati road near the racecourse in Otaki.
If time and access permits we could try the link up to North Manakau road...

If non of this works we'll just head up to Manakau and head into the bush from there!

So its now SUNDAY not Monday!

Sunday ride was a great blast, ended up on the tompson track and entered through otaki down past the race course. Ride was abit hairy in places with more than afew slippery rocks and uphill bits but managed to get to Manauku North Road. There is some orsome veiws at the top of the ridges and afew tracks to explore next time, came back from Te horo along the beach it was magic. Thanks to gav and paul for making it a fun adventure.
Pics to come.

23rd August 2009, 18:50
Yes really good ride, and just challenging enough to make it an adventure - ey Paul?:clap:

Bit of time spent poking around at Otaki forks and over the suspension bridge, but nothing much happening so off to Otaki, as described by Stormtrooper Shane.

Some sticky going on some rarely used tracks, and a BIG shock off an electric fence for me:Oi:

Then the Thompson track proper... Pretty tight, steep, wet, rocky and slippery near the start, some good splashes and then up the ridge line. Man were we sweaty when we finally stopped with Pauls poor little KLR hissing and spitting like a boiling kettle:(

Then it gradually opened up and the views once at the top were AMAZING! Trip back down made me glad we were doing it that way round as was pretty steep and rutty in places:clap:

Finally a great blast down the sawdust/chippings then on to the gravel in the cleared forest, over the river and out at the shelter on Manakau road, (Past a sign saying no vehicles - oops!)

Final blast down the beach to waikanae - wont be able to do this on a motorcycle after Sept 1 (even with a warrant & rego) - new local by-law - Bastards:Oi:

Would be good to do again with a few more of us. Recomend good tyres - mine weren't- especially on a big bike! So no bald trail wings on a Africa Twin!

Enjoy the photos!

So on Friday night I bought a GoPro 5 Motorsport and stuck it on the front of the bike to record our trip into Sutherlands Hut.

I got the 54 degree lens version rather than the 170 degree widescreen. I felt it gave better depth and I didn't need the widescreen as we aren't in a racetrack situation with vehicles beside trying to pass that we want to capture.

For the first attempt the camera was mounted onto the front headlight using a suction cup fitting that came with the camera. I think Helmet mounted might be better for a number of reasons.

So in all it's glory here's the first installment of filming.

That's an awesome first attempt at video Eddie, well done mate! Picture quality is pretty damn good!!!

:2thumbsup

Certainly didn't seem to get vibration problems with the headlight mount, which was a wicked result first time out. I can see how if helmet mounted you would get the views around corners quicker as the rider would look around the turn before the bike turns. Maybe with helmet mount you might also get a better perspective of the angles too, eg when climbing up/down slips or entry/exits of river crossings - the headlight mount does seem to flatten everything out. BTW, I did manage to get sound but very low and only with the YouTube AND my laptop both turned up to max volume! i suppose helmet mount would also allow you to look around and capture some of the scenery as we pass it too. Decisions, decisions.....!

You're gonna have some great fun playing around with setups - good on ya mate for gettin going on video! Bloody brilliant!

Mark you are spot on ID'ing my new bike. I wanted a more dirt oriented bike that was small enough to be manhandled without help. Recently the T/A has seen some places (stuck) where I shouldn't have taken it, riding alone.

First impression offroad at Red Rocks is it's very enjoyable to flick around. And on road it cruises comfortably at 100kph with the wide ratio 6 speed gearbox. The fuel injected engine is very smooth and really winds out to high rpm.

Wish list - knobblies, larger fuel tank, pannier racks.

Good news you made it through OK. Well done.

Don't get cocky about recovery and try something too soon. You can set yourself back weeks by forgetting things are barely knitted back together after an operation. Take things slowly and think before doing anything vigorous or sudden. We will post written descriptions of the Toppy's waitress after each ride, to help you through.

Just thought I'd let you guys know had my GP f/u on the hernia op this past Wednesday - upshot is I DIDN'T have keyhole surgery; got a nice 4 or 5 inch incision instead - can't believe the clinician didn't bother to tell me they'd done a full op & not keyhole before discharging me from the hospital! Explains why I've been so uncomfortable since the op!
Bloody close call as before the op the consultant told me I'd be able to commute on the bike from this coming Monday(ie 2 weeks rest) and now of course my GP is saying minimum 6 weeks completely off the bike because one loss of balance and holding up 160+Kg's to stop it falling and I'd be rippin the heck out of the layers of sutures! Lucky I saw the GP this week and not next week aye!!!!!
Grrrrrrrr! :2guns:

So won't be joining you ladies for fun on bikes for a while longer yet!

And I get to commute on the bus which takes longer and costs more, for at least 4 extra weeks!

Fred101
14th September 2009, 12:28
New boots ha ha. They leak, the clips come undone, they are tight, hard to walk in. One day I'll get used to em. Well here's the story. Went through the creek at the bottom of Rimu road, noticed a change in tone, thought it was the water, ha ha, rode up the hill to catch up with Andy. Whilst looking around for a tow rope found a credit card, drivers license, key, and access card in a plastic bag, well off the track, turned out they belonged to someone Andy knew, someone was lucky. Gave up on the idea of a supplejack towrope when a couple of hunters turned up with some "string". Coasted back down the hill with string all set to be towed by Andy. Back at the creek though bugger it, it's only making a loud rattly noise, what could really go wrong? motored across the creek. Got under tow for a couple of hundred meters when the rope gave out. Figured that since the bike was still going and the alternative was to leave it behind decided that we would leave it behind when we had no alternative but to do that. What the? . . . yea that's what I thought, but it's logical right? Managed to get up to a few hundred meters from the Pram track junction, when the noise got "serious" and Andy left me to go to get some cellphone coverage to see if we could call Mark - or someone - anyone. Jackpot!!! He came back with a quad bike rider and a tow rope, so then it was a slow tow with wussy me electing to coast down the hills got us back to the Maungakotukutuku gate where surprise surprise there was Mark & Bruce and a spare spot on the trailer. A quick beer with Mark and Bruce in the sun on the way home and dropped off at the gate by Bruce. A great day out and now a motor to pull apart.

andy mac
16th September 2009, 12:47
Fred what's the verdict on the motor?
It highlights the necessity of carrying a towrope but any offroad tow is going to be difficult because of the constantly changing terrain - uphill, downhill, stream crossings, slippery shit etc. Probably best to have a towrope with some stretch to dampen the on/off throttle surges. And I think the towed bike must be able to drop the tow at any time, to avoid being dragged along on their side. This probably deserves its own topic.
Photo 1 Fred behind the towtruck - Yamaha Raptor 600
Photo 2 Paul in the tank traps on Odlins Rd summit
We were just 3 riders and it's amazing how much less downtime there is with a smaller group. Shorter stops at bottlenecks but also less photo opportunities.

Looks like the river crossings will be pretty deep by saturday and as for the extent of the infamous wet clay...:(

I'm in Lower Hutt so if you are getting bored in an evening it's only about 20 minutes away.

There's a few other thing that can be done as well, maybe even to the summit of Odlins road once the evenings get a bit later.

Yo, that all sounds good. Got me dualsport tyres on so most things should be doable... might take you up on that offer Eddie - I'll bring a couple of ales and I'll get your thoughts on my clunky upchange on the RD04.

Sorry Joe, no guns for you, but I do have a great vid of my boy operating a kids digger - working hydraulics and all that - you'd be proud!

Dave, hope you heal up soon mate and we'll get you back on that DR for a bit of torque action!

Cheers, Buggs

It starts directly across the road from the carpark at the summit of Akatarawa road.

Glen and I are going to the Moonshine organized trial ride (http://www.silver-bullet.co.nz/event.php?id=7017) on Sunday.

I believe Michael (Pampara) and Andy_Mac may well be there as well.

If you like slippery clay and tight single track its great fun

Yes - it is my plan to be there. Will ride in on my own wheels rather than van it - hopefully the bike remains rideable at the end of a loop or two.

This ride was one of the first I took the Pampera on when I first bought it back in 2003. I remember it being very gnarly (it was the previous day's National Enduro Course) and I was really pleased with the bike purchase choice I had just made.

Went to the protest ride, couldn't help but notice, in pride of place in front of Parliament Building, nothing less than an '08 KLR! Was tempted to go and park next to it.
Annette King (MP for Rongatai) husband rides, so maybe that was his bike - guess you would have to have a fair degree of clout to be allowed to park there. It is certainly the right colour for a Labour MP to be seen on.

Hi lads, me and Pampa were thinking of going for a wee after-work excursion on Monday night. Nothing too serious or distant, just fill in a couple of hours.

Anyone else keen? Unsure where to just yet - maybe over the Rimutakas for a play on the tracks at the bottom of the other side (where those concrete blocks are). Option B could be Red Rocks. Probably not akatarawas at this stage till the weather sorts itself out.

so if we head over the hill, meet at Caltex at say 6pm? If we head south to Red Rocks then meet at the carpark at the same time? Open to discussion, I just want to ride.

Things I learnt last night:

High wind (Even by Wellington standards), chunky gravel, steep inclines, road tyres, and an ancient 2 tonne tractor isn't a great combination, but it will get there.

A SM400 is faster off the line than a R100GS PD, but the PD will start to reel in the SM400 from about 70km/h.

At that time the SM400 will be in 4th, while the PD is just reaching the top of 2nd gear.

A R100GS PD will rev to 8600rpm, even though the published redline is 6500rpm

I would love to be there for that but I think it would classify as a 'bridge too far' with 'her indoors' :baby:

now if the weather forecast was good then it might be worth the risk

Marks, I won't be riding this W/E. I was made to promise to stay home (& it was the last available w/e before Xmas for me too) :crybaby:...But instead of being family or house time, it is beginning to look like a work weekend instead.:Pokey:..Crazy time of the year.

No. It was a team effort pushing the bike up the last few metres. I didn't have another go because I'd "made it". (Never mind the fact I was totally rooted from the first couple of attempts).

Oh, and the view from the top....simply awesome.

I must get in there again, real soon.:soon: (but Sunday is too soon)

you forgot to mention the gale force winds around the Ruimutukas

We waited at Featherston for you for a bit (until the rain got nasty)

What a great ride - we got to the foot of the 2nd bit of cnut - I had a trailwing on the back of the KLR and Mark had a bald TKC on the back of the A\T and Micheal had some girly piece of crap on the back of the DR350 - that is one NASTY NASTY hill (you should take your KTM Boulevard up there - we'll come and watch)

woohoo - that is an awesome way to spend a day :wari:

You know the sort of ride Im talking about - spur of the moment - calculated risks - a few thing almost go wrong...

Not a huge story to tell, just gassed up after tea and shot over the Pram track from the Hutt, bit of a loop round Hydro valley, back over the Paekak hill. All alone - that was the best bit. Don't get me wrong - love riding with others, but adv riding alone, with real risks is always a rewarding experience. Hopefully someone out there knows what I'm babbling about. Ride was topped off nicely by Pink Floyd in the buds.:done:

Damn, real life starts again in the morning. :zzzz:

Peace out

Good on ya man. I quite like riding on my own also. I tend not to go anywhere too dangerous though. Had a few too many close calls.

Pink Floyd is cool too, but some of those 18 minute long songs can get a bit much. Black Sabath for me.

How about Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells (25min + 23min) or Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick (43mins).

One song through the Maungatapu...

Would it count if i tape a piece of card with alphanumerics and paint some orange dots on the side?

I am looking into switch my road bike for a dual purpose but they're quite expensive...

It took me about 1 hour 15' mins from CBD and back. The sand was very soft a light fresh wind on a otherwise hot day. A few turists and 4WD on the way. Non-stop till the lighthouse quick rest and enjoy the outdoors. Brilliant.

Anybody keen to have a good at lunch time?

Cheers,
Pablo

Can you ride the other side of the harbour towards Lake Ferry? I know you can't get all the way around? But on the way back from the Dusty Butt on the ferry I saw a mountain biker towards the light house......
By the way, I see some great tracks out that way, nice ride by the looks of it, would be good in a howling southerly I bet...:)
