Ocean Rd for me as well, if you think the TDM will cope with the sand level. No knobblies on this one.
USA tells me my bits will be posted before or on Friday (their's) which only leaves a week. Can't ride without my bits!
Give me a gentle start time as well, leaving from Levin and can't see before 8 am!
Could go the other way and meet you over the hill I suppose. (Nope Akatarawa Rd is the best option if open)
Cheers

I might be a starter for option 3, since you'll be heading my way. I plan to be way too hungover that day to travel south enough for the other options.

route 2 http://g.co/maps/hb897
More coastal route, takes in Ocean beach,(little bit of easy sandy track) Lake ferry for a feed and out to Cape palliser (may be seals out that way) ans A little Gravel diverson on the way back to Martinbrough. probably the least amount of gravel in this option, but good scenery
This could be a plan. I've only ever explored around that area in the landcruiser  so it would be good to go for a look on the bike.

Okay, Andy Mac, me, and another are going to pop my cherry re Odlins Rd - I've never been there. He assures me that my worn E09 won't be an issue. Meeting at 10.00am at Rimutex. Anyone else keen? Metservice says it'll be fine. Andy tells me its a rocky base, so the wet weather we've had shouldn't impact. And I'm ready for another ride :woohoo:
ooo, someone take a camera, I see potential here.
I'm seriously considering doing the Motomart Adventure ride on Sunday, Aslan is going along to that.

Ocean Beach is great.
I've been a wee way along the beach there - we took the cruiser around as far as the Sesquicentennial Mukamuka Covenant (now just an unlabelled red star on the Topo50 maps), to see what the hell it was.

That's the one. Not terribly exciting, but we were intrigued by the concept of a sesquicentennial, so had to have a look.

Aslan knows where they are going, the details he gave me were 'ride leaves Motomart Lower Hutt 9am Sunday - Glendu Station, Hinakura, Admiral's Road and out to Gladstone Pub'.
I'm not aware of any cost.

Nope, it's by where the track runs along the edge of a big dropoff beside the big open grass area. There's big plaque mounted in the concrete, like 4 foot across.

I'll have to keep my eyes open for it when I'm around there. I haven't seen it yet, and i even walked around from the Wainui end a few times.

Ok - I don't think Todd Crighton - Sales Manager of Motomart will object to my posting this.
He has a mailing list of people who have some affinity / prospective affinity with Adventure Riding - many on the list have some association with the BMWOR and or ride GS's - so the rides are big bike friendly
Of course the hope is that we will support Motomart with some business and or ultimately buy a bike - on this ride Todd is offering test rides on the F800GS - a great machine - and yes I would like one (but will be resisting the temptation to take a ride this Sunday) Rode Henry Plowrights for 100km including much gravel on an Adventure ride and was well impressed.
Here's an extract from Todd's note - obviously we all take part at our own risk
May see some of you on Sunday - Cheers Aslan
"Good news our next adventure ride is this Sunday 18th sept.
We will leave Motomart at 9 am and travel to Glendhu in the Waiarapa then back over Admirals Hill to the Gladstone Pub for lunch at around 1pm, where you can then depart at your own leisure back to Wellington.
I will riding my new F800GS, if you’d liike to have a test ride on it, let me know and I’m sure we can organise it."
The BMW Demo bike tour has been set for the 18th nov till the 30th nov. we’ll have 10x new BMW’s all here as demos. Pencil it in your diary to come and have a play, of course it comes at a cost, we’re going to sell you one.
Regards Todd"

Metservice says it'll be fine. Andy tells me its a rocky base, so the wet weather we've had shouldn't impact. And I'm ready for another ride :woohoo:
Andy Mac ph'd Thursday & invited me up to ride Odlins Rd with him & a friend Dave. I'd never ridden that track, & had some misgivings given Gus's weight issues, but agreed to give it an attempt.
Met EddieB, Andy Mac, & Dave, at Rimutex. Dave has a breathed on KLX 650 with a 685 kit in it, needle jet issues (far to rich), and a Pro Circuit exhaust that is even more obnoxious than Mark_S's, (if it is possible to imagine that). The bike is also a mission to start. Dave seemingly has ADD & controls this by popping wheelies at every opportunity.
Just before Staglands we met another couple of Andy's friends at their Rivendell farmlet, riding a WR250R & a TT250R (looming Alzheimer's has already wiped their names from my memory - sorry guys - I did enjoy meeting & riding with you).
As it turns out, the Akatarewas are closed after Staglands at present, while a couple of new bridges are put in. The first we could avoid by riding thru the creek, the second posed more of an issue, and after exploring some other options we flagged that.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-gO2bv-eb3lU/TnRRapqf-2I/AAAAAAAAJT4/XnHKUS1OoCo/s800/DSCF1904.JPG
Back to the farmlet, a quick call, & we have access to a track to the Antler Lodge, & forestry roads at the back of the farmlet. The view from Antler Lodge was awesome, but the one way track to the top of the hill at the back was more than Gus could handle, so we did a u turn, and headed out onto some other tracks.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-SoKlBudLXZY/TnRRcny71PI/AAAAAAAAJUY/tZF_o2U9Dno/s800/DSCF1906.JPG
The theme for the day was snow damage. The area had about 2 ft of snow a few weeks ago. Lots of trees & branches down, gorse draped across otherwise good tracks etc.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-NzRk208M4p0/TnRRf2b8qEI/AAAAAAAAJUI/Aq18PDZatJg/s800/DSCF1908.JPG
The final track was a very steep descent on rotten rock, but totally closed in with gorse. The alternative was blocked with a large tree down. I tripoded most of the descent, with the bike switched off, and using the clutch as a brake. That worked real well. Quite a few gorse spines still made it thru the jacket, slapped me in the face, prickled at unexpected & inopportune moments.

Sounds like you had it easy
Glen wanted to ride the 257 track. Said it was fun. It might have been before all the snow and rain. Once you start you are committed as its a nasty rutty slippery downhill followed by a nasty rutty slippery uphill. Had to cut our way through a wall of gorse and manoeuvre around lots of obstructions.
This morning I feel like I've been buttfucked by an elephant.
I only videoed the easy bits...

KLR/DR friendly = 525 cakewalk (but that just means you'd have to wait for us a lot)

Steve you did great, in fact I was a bit pissed that you were pulling away from me up the big zigzag track - hmmm maybe that extra 750cc does create some serious torque.
FYI + Eddie
Disregarding the gorse, the Awakino Challenge loop on the Dusty Butt was much more challenging!

Adventure Bike Ride
Yesterday we went thru Cedarholm Creek heading up to Deadwood Ridge when a branch whipped Dave off the back of his bike. There is now some serious water erosion on the track and I don't think it is suitable for medium adventure bikes - actually I was also thinking how did we manage to ride up there in the dark last summer? Buggs will prove me wrong.

unfortunately all tracks up there are two way so you always have to ride conservatively.
Every month or two you hear of head-ons between bikes or bikes and quads. There has been the odd serious injury as a result.

Me and Pikey could be keen. We were planning on heading over that way on the 24th anyway to catch a bit of the Vintage MX on at Gladstone.
Could that be incorporated into the ride? Lunch at the pub?
If not, no sweat, we'll do our own thing.

I'd expect us to be there by about 9.45am. If you or any other Wairarapa people want to meet us there that would probably be the best place.

Thats why the start time is the reasonable hour of 9.15, and not something like 8.00am or 8.30am. Thw wather is whatever it turns out to be on the day, both the computer generated forecasts on metvuw, and the metservice rural ones show very little moisture untill late in the day.

After a fairly solid stint at the climbing wall this afternoon, I'm too lazy to write up a proper RR, so I'll just stick all my photos up here.

Sorry to hear that Eddie. :(
I broke my gear lever ankle years ago (playing rugby). In a cast for 10 weeks. I was gong nuts, so rigged a piece of string from the gear lever, across the tank, to the right side of the handle bar. Stomp lever to change down, pull string with throttle hand to change up. Worked great....until I had to put my left foot down on uneven ground. :crybaby:

I'm confused - Wairarapa or Mungatooks?
If its the Mungys then to the best of my knowledge the Pram track is really nasty (big mud holes) at the top at the moment. I wouldn't take my balding E07 equipped KLR over the Pram track. The really good stuff is all accessible from the Paraparaumu side so it would kind of make sense to go in from the Paraparaumu side?
if I've misunderstood and you wand to go over the Wairarapa then I'll see you at Rimutex at 9 :)

I think there's a bit of a split. Personally, I might take a look at the back side of Hydro Saddle on Sunday morning (need to be back just after lunch). I only went to the top last time and there seems to be tin loads of stuff to ride over the south of the summit.

Okay, after having a chat with Mark_S this am we have decided to ride across to Wairarapa, initially to Martinborough for a coffee, then into Sutherlands Hutt in the Aorangi Forest Park. You'll need to bring lunch in with you. Looking for an all day ride. :Punk:
Meet 9.00am at Caltex Rimutakas. All welcome.
Sorry Buggs & Stormtrooper if this doesn't suit. Both Mark & I are running on old tyres pre the WAR ride (I want a new set for that ride), & I think Sutherlands likely has a better rock base. The weather in Wairarapa is also forecast to the better this weekend. I haven't ridden the Akataraweras much & am keen to do so - when I have decent tyres & the base is a bit drier.

No worries - I'll have to give it a miss as wifey has an early afternoon appointment. I rode through the Akatarawas on the way home from Palmy today. It was actually really dry apart from a wet patch at the top. It looks daunting but was completely rideable on an E07 rear and D606 front at 28 PSI. Enjoy the ride!

Hey Buggs, you didn't see a little round mirror lying around on the pram track did you?, I took the motard through there today and lost it.
You're right those ruts look worse than they really are but with 17" road rubber I chose to scoot around the perimeter, in the centre photo you can see on the right next to the tree where I kicked some dirt out of the way to flatten the top of the mound.

It was loose on the shaft - having now done some internet research I suspect the securing nut may just have backed off and the impeller may actually be ok
If they are cheapish I may replace it anyway as the inner surface may be worn/scored from spinning

Hi - F650gs Steve here.
Thanks guys for a great day. I think my bike just wanted to be like Steves R100gs and run a horizontal piston - it fell over often enough. Ok maybe my lack of riding skills had something to do with it!!!!
The track into Sutherland seemed a bit more demanding than the other times I had been in with a few more challenging mud holes with unknown nasties lurking below the surface. But that's why they call it adventure riding, I suppose. I should have listened to R100 Steves sage advice at the start of the track to remove my mirrors (sorry Steve) - it cost me a new replacement.
Also enjoyed the jaunt along Ocean Beach and saw some new territory. What an amazing piece of coast line and fun to ride.
I had a close encounter with a rabbit on the ride home up the west side of the lake. It had waited politely for R100 Steve to pass then made a beeline for my front wheel. Fortunately it decided at the last minute that it was not going to do either of us any favours if it kept on its present course - phew!!!!!! - it could have hurt.
So thanks again and hope to see you all again in the not too distant future.

You will find that the fuel injected GS mirrors have a clever sacrificial connector (clamp) between the handbar fitting and stem. Unless you broke the glass, this is the bit that needs replacing, not the entire mirroe assembly. I used to keep a spare connector in my tool kit!

That would seem right, given that the broken bit had rust in the centre. I gather the connector is a threaded tube?
Good to see new riders on this last outing. Enjoyed riding with you SRK.

Other clever thing, from a production and inventory viewpoint is that these 650 GS/Dakar mirrors are not "handed". LH and RH mirrors are interchangeable, you just twist the mirror itself around in its mount to face the other way when fitting.
The threaded clamp connector is not that cheap as I recall!

I don't know at this stage. Next lot of x-rays and review is Dec 20th. At that point I will either be walking or in a moonboot. Even if I'm walking I'll be taking advise from the orthopedic about if/when it will be strong enough.

Michael,
Thanks for the heads up on this - we live and learn. Unfortunately I also smashed the plastic housing behind the actual mirror ( if you are going to something you may as well do it proper, I was always told!!!!)
I just picked up a cheapo replacement - have not had a chance to see if it will fit yet. Will look out for a proper GS replacement in due course.

actual it was a loose water pump impeller
and I suspect I didn't tighten the securing bolt up tight enough when I pulled the side cover off the engine about 25k km ago
so its a little unfair to blame the bike
the only other breakdown was caused by the original owner not fitting an exhaust plug properly so both breakdowns in 36k km were owner caused - not bike

Just testing them out, how it sits, whether one makes a noticable difference in balance, how stable they are mounted etc. I'm pleased to report it passed on all aspects. I only did about 170km yesterday so definately no need for one but it was full, about 3.8 litres of petrol.

It's been a while since I've been around here. I joined up ages ago, got myself a bike and went for a hoon up in the Akas with Bugs and that was about the end of my riding. My bike got flogged from out side my office and then my company made a bit of a habit of sending me out of the country for work.
Anyway, now I have another bike(DRZ) and I’m in the country, though I'm off to Sweden again on Easter Monday.
Is anyone keen to go out for a ride over the long weekend? I was thinking maybe Red Rocks or something similar I pretty much only have street tyres on at the mo, though I think I may have some legal dirt tyres in the shed.

Either Eddie can't read, doesn't care, or simply enjoys the queens chain riparian rights along waterways - lots of gravel so must be a river sometime.

There's some tracks that go to a walking track near that sign. So okay in that area. Well used.
I think what the signage is about is the farmland that the access goes through further along. It seems obvious that 4wds rip it up from time to time. And my guess is that stock nos 'vary' (dwindle) between being allowed to graze there, & being shifted elseshere, probably to the stations intense frustration

The end of the video where I am riding the gravel is several km's outside of the area marked by the Private land signs.

my bike's in the middle of being made road legal but i'll make it out there one of these weekends.
i tell you though i find it tricky knowing where not to go -- so many people don't have signs on property they don't want you to go on.
then you end up in their front yard and they give you a little speech.

I'd better throw it up here also. Sunday 30th, MAD loop (Makairo - Akitio - Dannevirke). Who's keen for some Makairo awesomeness? Big day for you Welly boys, but you're supposed to be hard buggers aren't ya?
Any Wellington riders wanting to come along meet at Caltex Rimutaka before 8.30am. We'll ride to meet Bart at Makairo at 10.00am.
Remember daylight saving kicks in tonight (spring forward - clocks go forward 1 hr).

Haha, good call. Those meat lover pizzas often have me wondering. The meat ball things don't taste like any meat I can recognise.

I was considering organising a weekend down here to ride Ocean Beach and that. There's a DOC house just at the beginning of that that sleeps 10 in bunks, plus tent space outside and it can be booked exclusively for weekends. Last time I checked it would work out at about $15 per bunk bed per night and about a fiver per tent. You would have to bring everything required to eat/drink/sleep as it's 30-40 km of mostly gravel from the nearest town which closes early.
It wouldn't be full on non stop dawn till dust sort of riding weekend but if we met at the house Friday night, Saturday we could do the Doc house to Ocean Beach and ride that, Over to Lake Ferry Pub for lunch, Lake Ferry beach then out to Ngawi and Cape Palliser lighthouse. That would take most of Saturday depending on how many riders and how they like soft sand. There may even be time to do a run from the house to the hut and back that afternoon/evening
Sunday could be Sutherlands Hut in the morning (again for some?) then everyone can head off back home.

The E-07 is getting a bit worn, though I gave it a bit of a thrashing on Sunday and it didn't seem to wear it down much.

It was a lot more rutted in general and the streams did have a lot more chunky rocks in them than usual. No, didn't go anywhere near the hill.
