So the postman finally came today and delivered me a box of goodies.
I can finally start on the PD carbs. While investigating the 800 in the weekend we pulled the PD plugs. The carb I had been able to open and check was running not too bad but the one I can't get the top off looks like it is running horrendously rich.
So first step is drilling out the carb screws, any hints?

Nicely done.
Is it just me or does that brakeline look like it's going to the hub and not the caliper?

That vent line wasnt tied up properly. Good spotting

Brake line? Vent for Hub? Bahh humbug. Looks like the breather for the diff to me (all bikes have a diff dont they?) :third: Been altered to prevent water getting in during river crossings. Who made up your brake line Phil? Had to get some made for my bike a while back when I removed the ABS. Not a cheap thing to do

There from Eurobike. I got them from Image M/C in New Plymouth. There really cool because the ends come separately and the line comes in 25mm increments. There are all sorts of different ends. Prices aren't to scarey

The brake works GREAT. I have to retrain my right foot as I can lock it up now whereas before it was impossible, it hardly even slowed us down. It does highlight that the front is a bit weak. I used to have a different front end on the bike with a 320mm disc and a 4 piston caliper, so I know how good they can be.

Yea, the vent is my own handy work, with a bit of Kelvins machining thrown in.
I need to do a gearbox one as well. Beemers are reasonably easy to drown with the snorkles pointing forward like that.

I need to drill out the carb screws on the right hand side carb on the PD.
How do I go about this?
Both are seized solid, the heads were fairly mangled when I got the bike and I've completed the job trying to get them undone.
I have a new needle, needle jet and allen head screws to go onto the carb and soon as I can get the current screws out. I've done the other side no problem.
Box'a'bits
24th August 2009, 20:42
Hard to be too sutble about it. Be brave. What' the worst that can happen...Chose a drill bit the same size as the shank of the screw. Measure a good screw for depth of the counter sunk portion. Drill out the countersunk portion until this separates from the body of the screw, or (assuming you are doing both sides) you are able separate the top of the carb. Then either cut across along the top of the residual screw body, to give you something to screw out on, or alternatively twist the residual screw body using vise grips. Good luck. Try not to damage the carb top. You'll likely find the corrosion was in the countersunk portion rather than the screw thread itself. :bye:

Anyone know where to get 40mm Bing carb diaphragms at a decent price, quickly?
One of mine appears to be stretched, it won't seat properly and seems to somehow become about 1cm larger diameter than it should.
I just rang my friendly dealer and she was just as surprised at the $96 each cost from BMW NZ.

Thanks Steve, careful application of the drill and I have my right hand carb open now.
I've found why it was running like shite. The diaphragm is holed with a chunk missing out of one edge 3-4mm round. The carb looked like shit, black and moist everywhere but it cleaned up well.
Also the needle jet was really full of gunk so thats been cleaned right out and a new needle jet installed. The vents around the needle jets were completely blocked in both carbs. A new needle will go in when I have new diaphragms then it should rock.
So, anyone know when I can get 2 diaphragms for 40mm carbs in a hurry without paying the $96.80 each BMW want to rape me for?

There's a REALLY REALLY nice PD just been advertised on trade me.
Black with full luggage it's the 'classic' model which I think was a final edition model.
Bidding currently at $4000 and reserve met.

Well, spent a bit of time in the garage this weekend.
The PD now has:
New Needles
New Needle Jets
New Allen head carb screws
Cleaned out fuel passages, geez there was a lot of gunk in the jet passage
Replacement 'Bean can' installed, big thanks to Igormortis
New Pivot Pegz
Gear lever adjusted to suit Pivot Pegz
Front pads removed and sanded down as they were a bit glazed and hadn't been bedding in that well
Headlight dropped off to Bryce at 'Buckets & Bits' for some remedial surgery
Hopefully my new diaphragms will arrive in the post Monday. I sourced a pair from R-Twin works in Palmerston North for $49 included shipping. Once those are in I can reassemble the carbs and she should be all go.
And I took the R80 out for a quick spin this morning, she's rocking along well. Lots of fun around twisty city streets.

Here's hoping. I was down to 11km/litre on the last tank and wasn't getting the grin factor you should with that sort of economy. When we pulled the plugs it was obvious the cylinder I had been able to access was running not too bad but the other one was serious rich.

Well she lives again, My diaphragms were in the letterbox when I got home tonight so she's now (mostly) back together again.
Timing has been set up as close as I can do on my first effort of doing it alone and it's idling between 900-1000rpm.
Hopefully the chunk out of the diaphragm you can see below is the cause of most of my worries, along with worn needles and needle jets.
However I'm fully expecting it to run like a dog under power as it's been set up with all the worn out parts in it,. I'll probably find the carbs are way out of sync and it will be way rich or lean and I'll spend most of next weekend tweaking it.

Which one do you trust to take you to the Kiwi? Which has the most suitable tyres??...See you up there.
The NZD is looking good against the GBP. Just imported NZD 450 of parts for the Gilera. Looks like a similar order's in train for the RS. Might be good to get that running again. Its been looking rather sad in the corner of the garage, with an oil splodge under it, for far too long.. Think the battery has finally died (no worries - only 7 yrs old)...

The 800 has better tyres and is running sweet, The PD should be sweet now too but will probably need some tweaking to get just right.
But it's raw vrs refined and refined is the one I want to take.

So hope that Bryce comes to the party, or take a risk that it doesn't rain on your parade. H4s don't do well in the wet, though yours seems to have done okay... :innocent:

Bryce came to the party, I picked up my headlight this morning and put it on the bike tonight.
So I took the bike out for a spin. Once warmed up the idle is a little high. I suspect also the timing is not quite right and/or the carbs are a bit out of balance as the bike is quite vibey where it wasn't before.
Acceleration however was constant throughout the rev range with no more huge gaping holes where nothing happened or it missed like crazy, with the exception of some hesitation just coming off idle.
The headlight seems good, following cars the top edge of the beam was at the bottom level of rear windows.

So whats not quite right if it's hard to start when cold?
Warm it seems to fire right up but cold it takes a while to fire.
Haven't had a chance to check out the timing and carb balance, I might just have to ride it as it is.

Timing has a large impact on ease of starting...However if the variability is when the bike is cold, that might would suggest the carb settings. Did you look at the choke settings? Also idle circuit.

Listening to National radio today. The lady who was introducing the daily "Best song ever written" started telling us about her & hubbys trip of a lifetime thru Turkey, Syria, Lebanon etc on a 97 PD. She said it just went brilliantly & no punctures. They were from Howick Auckland & she was in China teaching for a year before the trip.
What was more impressive was the announcer Noelle was knowledgeable about bikes & was fawning over the PD.
A nice start to my afternoon...

Could be the $2000 O-ring. You should investigate that a bit more.
That looks like fun
8th September 2009, 18:19
Only 2 easy reasons for an oil filter coming loose,
Either
A Faulty filter
B Faulty fitting
And its not "A" very often at all. Always ensure you have the right filter for the job. If fitting an aftermarket filter ensure the "O" ring and the hole in the middle are the right size and thread. Check the sealing surface before fitting the new filter, not unheard of for the "O" ring to stay stuck to it when removing the old filter. Light film of oil on sealing gasket. Tighten the filter to 11Nm.
Simple as that (allegedly)

Was the filter loose? I have been out to repair an 1150 GS where someone had overtightened the oil filter and the outside can had come loose where it is crimped over on the top outside edge. What a shit of a job to get that off and replace it.
The other common complaint is for the large rubber gasket to stay stuck to the block when the old filter is removed most people just drop the old filter in the drain tin an dont notice it fit a new filter and the oil blows out between the 2 gaskets.
What ever it is hope its fixed good luck

I'm going to regret this I know but....
I'm thinking of selling the R80G/S but still trying to work out whats it's worth in the current market. If anyone is interested PM me with specific questions, silly offers will be ignored as I'm not going to let it go for nothing. I don't need to sell it and still enjoy riding it.
There's pic of it on the first page of this thread, and in many of the earlier galleries found by following the link in my signature, screen & rack not included however though the brackets for the rack are.
Reg'd till 21/02/2010
Wof'd till 18/10/2009
Reg'd as 1986, frame # traces to 1982.
70% worn E-09 on the rear.
30% worn Vee Rubber knobbly thing on the front.
Braided front brake line
Aftermarket top triple clamp. Much stronger than original and gives 2 bar mnounting positions
Bar risers
Custom 'Rider' seat by McDonalds Motor Trimmers of Tauranga.
Full Stainless Staintune exhaust, headers right back to silencer. Worth a couple of grand on it's own.
26 litre R100GS tank, gives ~210 miles to reserve.
KM's unknown but it's a 27 year old bike so probably lots, speedo was been replaced by previous owner though the old one is included and has a broken glass. Current one reads about 13,000 miles and had 275 miles on it when I bought it. Apparently it's not the original motor.
Brackets for Ventura racks.
Progressive front springs
Hagon rear shock, a bit worn.
Homemade Alloy bash plate made by previous owner.
Gearbox, Driveshaft & Diff oils replaced June 2008.
New BMW fork gaiters, fork seals, fork oil & carbs balanced 18/08/2008
Due an oil change, new oil filter included.
Also comes with side panels, original standard springs, low front guard, spare front disc and a few odds & ends.
Goes great, hard to stop the rear spinning up out of gravel corners it's so responsive. Way lighter and smaller off road than the PD, but 90% of my riding is on-road.

changed the oil when it was hot, just finished 230k ride put new filter in done it up, run it & parked it up for the week, that night temp dropoed to around -5 am thinking that because it was still warm when i tightened the filter that because of the cold it may have shrunk enough to loosen after a long rough ride, seems to be ok now, & as it's been pointed out, just plane faulty fitting by mwah

Email them a note about what you need if it's not listed. They don't rip-off with shipping costs and are relatively cheap compared to other BMW parts places.
Also, I seem to be the only one that's had a good experience with Chicago BMW- I ordered a FD bearing (the big Crown 899 bearing) at a listed US$130ish and for some reason they discounted to US$90.:eek5:

That was the only problem I had obtaining parts for that Beemer.
It wasn't mine, and I know little or nuthin' about the 'orrible krautwagons and the site was organised under "oilheads", "hexheads" and the like (surely as a German bike, there should be a "Squarehead" model).

Wondered why the R100RS wouldn't turn over. I appear to have boiled the battery. Might have overcharged a bit last time (forgot to turn the big charger off). Oh well, the batteries only 6.5 yrs old.....

Sidestand springs and metal bracket as shown, got one spare your willing to sell? please let me know.
These are the same on all airhead GS's, I don't know about road bikes.
The bracket in particular is no longer available, it's the first part I've had this problem with. The springs are ex-Germany.

The issue will not be the front forks themselves, but the triple clamps, and the offset on those. The later the forks the better - the RM forks must be from the late 80's - look at the turquiose seat. Also think about what sort of life some of the forks have had, & what it might take to get these reconditioned....

I was planning to swap some XR600 43mm forks onto the Transalp but lost interest when I bought the WRR. They are complete with triple clamps, brakes, wheel - seized steering head bearings & speedo drive. Because of the PD's extra weight you should use a larger motard disc. Can take any measurements if required.

I see paranoia has already set in. I am an expert at that myself:cool:.
Airheads always sound like they are about to self destruct, that's no cause for alarm. They are pretty easy to work on and all parts can be bought, well almost all. Eddie's found one that can't be bought anymore.
If you're in Auckland I'd be happy to have a look at your bike. Otherwise get someone who knows airheads to have a look. Island Bay, that's Wellington isn't it? Go see Michael at Motorad, I am sure he'd have a quick look at it.
Eddieb

Yep, an airhead should sound like a pocket of loose change. It's when it's quiet that you have to worry.
And the one part no longer available is the metal bracket the springs attach to on the sidestand, minor in the greater scheme of things.

Hi all, just a few questions...i am thinking of getting a 1200gs or gs adventure.
whats the deal with having to get the service done by BMW? are you able to get them serviced by a general bike mechanic?
If ya don't get them serviced by BMW can you get aftermarket parts that are somewhat cheaper? I hear brake pads alone cost almost $400 a set?? I really love the look of these bikes, and if i got one would definitely want to put it to good use :)

i would get it serviced by dealer until out of warranty....absolutely no excuses then.If its a older bike get t serviced wherever. They do have some things that need resetting by a BMW service computer I think.Search the web,ADV rider have a huge forum just on these bikes.I take internet stuff with a grain of salt.

they are a nice bike to ride.Very well balanced and much easier to ride at low speeds than their appearance suggests.Nice on the road too .40 l could be good for 700 ks.If i fill the pd to the very top i get over 500 k before reserve which is about 30 L used.If you completed the twin plug conversion, one of the main benefits is even better fuel range.

twin spark plugs.Shorter flame path allows higher comp and more advanced ignition and i beleive leaner mixtures
Those benefits are mainly for a worked motor.
For the earlier 9.5:1 motor it gave easier starting, better & smoother running in the lower rev range, better tolerance for lower octane fuels, and potentially lower engine temps. Or at least that why I did mine.
For Africa bikes, it gave in built redundancies (twin coil pack, 4 spark plug leads, 4 spark plugs).
Also higher cost, and a bucket load of complexity to set up properly.

I have asked many people about twin plugging and all of them have told me that they would not go through the effort again. With a properly ported head and shaped squishband you can accomplish the same performance and fuel usage results.

This twin spark thing has me intrigued. Do you just find a nice spot to drill & tap & go for it or are the heads already manufactured ready for another sparkplug.
What's a sqishband?

What's a sqishband?
Squishband basically refers to the shaping of the head in the combustion chamber. the idea to get the gas (air/fuel) spread to give fairly equal combustion (easier on a thumper as plug is usually in the middle). bit more complicated with the off center airhead.
this is why some people do a twin plug setup.
http://www.motorcycle.com/images/content/How-To/Fig_02.jpg
As for the modification of the heads, the guys that know what they are doing will drill and tap it for you, usually with a smaller sized plug. If the person doing the mod does not know what he is doing, then it may result in a cracked head. The biggest problem is not actually setting up the twin plug system, but to get the timing right. Expensive timing units with various advance curves are required to really get benefit. these guys make unit that can be used http://www.omegaignitions.com/

Have a look at a picture of a motor. The standard spark plug is top centre and the cooling fins and head are shaped to provide the gap for where the spark plug hole is located.
The lower half of the head is a mirror image of the upper half except for the existence of the actual plug hole, so the natural and obvious place to drill a 2nd hole is already there. You 'just' have to drill and tap the new hole. Whether thats by accident or design I have no idea.
As Newguy mentions however thats the easy bit. You then need to get the timing set up with additional sensors, buy and find how and where to mount a 2nd coil etc.

Very interesting reading Newguy. After seeing the head I see what you mean Eddie - the location of the sprakplug was the thing that intersted me. After reading about the additional wiring requirements I think the author summed it up when he mentioned it being a process not for the faint of heart nor short of funds.

The timing bit is interesting.
The DR just fires both plugs at the same time.
Box'a'bits
2nd March 2010, 17:26
The issues re timing is not between the two plugs (though there has been chatter about that). It more abut the optimal time for the plugs to fire, which is dependent on RPM. That is why an electronic solution is probably better, in that the advance can be modified as revs increase . The older boxers use a mechanical advance system.

wow, ok thats a new one for me. 2 x CDI's. What voltage regulator have you got going there?

I did the conversion. I figured 2 ignition modules gave the system some "redundancy" If one fails it will keep on running. With the help of a mate who is a mechanical tutor we tested the stock coils and the mitsi coil to make sure it wouldnt draw to much current. I ordered another part of the wiring loom with the plug on it and spliced that in. Michael Dobson from Motorad in Welli organised the head drilling for the extra plug. Been running for 30000km with no problems.
I have an Enduralast 450watt charging system as I found out that the extra 2.5amps that the extra ignition draws put me on the maximum of the stock system, and heated grips etc put it over the top. The stock system doesnt get full charge till 4000rpm either

I've got the Endurolast alternator as well, & its great. I've had it on a couple of boxers now. I feel it deals to a lot of the stock systems issues, but also makes more charge at lower revs, brilliant for commuting, or slow running.
The downside of the Endurolast was that I couldn't run the Omega (?) ignition that runs off the crank, with its programable maps. Instead I run a Boyer micro-digital system, which is supposed to be optimised for dual plugs. Remembering I replaced points & a mehanical advance (though now I see some people in the US are swapping back!). I really need to book dyno time to ensure that its actually running at optimised levels....However it has run sweetly, so I haven't really felt a pressing need to do this.
Mike Dodson at Motorad organised an Engineer at Petone to drill the twin plug holes for me. The bottom side runs a shorter reach & smaller plug. However I have seen elsewhere some people weld in an alloy washer to allow normal length plugs, so top & bottom as interchangeable.

Made a small mod to me rear fender
I've always thought the rear fender on the GS look a bit outdated compared to the rest of the bike. I like the classic look, but want to modernise it just a tad. So I combined the original fender with an Acerbis Nost rear fender.
I think the results aren't to bad. basically I chopped up the original and split it into 2 pieces. still used the original front bit to keep dirt off the battery.

Absolutely brilliant. Went down South over Xmas. That was another 4000km so probably done 6000km with it now. So different having some real braking power without having to stand on the pedal, especially 2 up and loaded. Having some power in the back seems to take a bit of the focus off the weak front brake. Have to do something about that to, one day.

Essentially what are the major differences between a GS & 'normal' airhead?
Is it feasible to get an old airhead & change a few things to get it GS-ish or wait till a GS comes up for sale?
I'm looking for a future project bike that doesn't have to go up firebreaks etc just tootle around gravel roads, Porika etc & I like the basic look of the oldies.

engine and gearbox and even the frames are the same i think.the GS has long suspension and a bash plate plus the bigger tank(s).
Eddieb
13th March 2010, 16:40
The top mounting point for the rear shock is different on the GS, stronger design and slightly different location. Rear shock is longer and swing arm/diff mount is also different location I believe.
Front forks are longer, with one or 2 road model exceptions that are the same, usually the RT or ST. I suspect there may be some subtle motor differences as there's different carb settings and power outputs. The rest as far as I am aware is just cosmetic in regard to tanks, instruments, pegs etc.

will you be riding your 1150 at the CCA? Mine has been retired to touring and commuting duties, with the occasional gravel run thrown in. I am sure it will hit 200000km before I'll get a new one, got about three years to go. I am getting better at picking it up, too. Dropped it at work last week outside work. I have to do a 90 degree turn, immediately after I take it off the main stand, in order to squeeze past a post and a wall. This works well feet up, unless of course the thing decides to stall. No harm done, apart from a dent in the concrete.

Gidday Alex - good to get your response - no I'm a wus - I prefer the extra confidence I get from riding a lighter machine on adventure rides like the Dusty Butt and CCA - so no, I plan on using the DR650 on Saturday. I do have renewed affection for my 1150 though and like you see mine as a 'keeper' - great for long rides with all road surfaces. I may use mine on Clint's MMMM ride this winter if I'm feeling brave.
Inshallah - I'll see you at Plimmerton this Saturday AM - yet to fit a Mitas E09 to the rear of the DR this week - Ciao Aslan aka Stephen O

I'm never going to be able to advertise this bike as 'careful owner, only ridden to the local shops' if I keep this up am I.
That looks like fun

What that pic doesn't tell you is that we were coming from the left, so the bike actually spun 180 degrees while sliding, and that it's actually about 1 1/2 metres down that bank which was near vertical. Track level was about shoulder height where I am standing. It took all 5 of us to right it and drag/push it back onto the track.
Where I am standing is where i landed.

Excessive speed?
Also shows how slippery the longer grass is. You're tyres are clean, so it wasn't mud.. Whilst you noted you are going to replace tyres, they don't seem THAT bad in the photos. Or did you just do that to polish the sump guard?
See that you turned a few divots on the way down. Hope you replaced those (got to keep the landowners happy).

I was doing 35 maybe 40 km/h. It was all the wet grass on a gentle corner. It's a lovely piece of track that.

Makes you wonder what you would do if you were riding alone. perhaps some rope and a ratchet packed away under the seat would come in handy combined with a nearby tree.

Someone with a better sense of colour that whoever did the psychedelic mid 90's Dr650 ones. Not much more sense though.

So for those with short memories (me), whats the diff between that there GSPD and the the GS "Adventure" thats 3.5k on tardme? beyond the tank being bigger?

Thats about it really. though the front fairing is a better shape on the PD, it looks a bit 'after thought' on the standard GS i think. There may be small differences in the instrumentation layout and gauges. If your lucky the PD may have factory heated grips, I don't know if the standard bike had them or not.
And someone has put low pipes on the standard one and it has the earlier style rocker covers which aren't quite as crash proof as the black ones.
They are same motor, chassis, wheels, brakes etc though so are just as capable as each other. The PD would be a bit heavier but would go a bit further per tank, and just looks cooler.
The PD has the little bikini fairing in front of the headers though if you are going to do anything more than a gravel road on it I'd recommend taking if off. The mounts are weak and it gets pushed back against the exhaust and melts. DAMHIK.

Just purchased a 2006 1200gs. Have to wait a week for them to fit new tyres and service. Can't wait. Will be a bit different from the old bandit but will be great to explore some new country.
