Yep, offer them a low ball offer, if it's been on sale for a while you might get lucky. Sucks to be a seller but thats how it is.

What year as well... there has been some minor changes over the years. For the GSA, 2010 heralded some performance improvements in the motor, receiving go fast goodies from the HP2
Somewhere along the line, the GS alternator went from about 600W to 720W. The R1200GSA has always had 720W. Makes a big difference when you want lots of accessories, and ABS etc do use up a lot more than one without.

Its an '07 & apparently dosent have the boosted brakes.
The bike isint on the market yet, but will be in a couple of weeks.
I thought the asking price was fairly reasonable at 15k.

It also lines up a bunch of machines based on mileage & year & the cheapest & roughest one dictates the price of the rest without anyone actually going & viewing or riding them.
This sometimes works in the buyers favour.

I don't actually agree with that. When I was selling my KLR one started with a $1reserve. It eventually reached $6K.
That one was pretty stock & in very good condition. There were & still are numerous similar examplesfor sale at a higher price. That set the benchmark really of wht the market was repared to pay.
I priced my bike accordingly lower & sold it.

I received some stuff from motobins today which reminded me that I forgot to order a rubber bung to cover the timing mark on the engine case.
If anyone is putting an order in soon & could include one I'd fix them up for it.

I did have a spare. However due to the vagaries of the shelf based filing system (similar to the floor based system....but higher) I cannot lay my hands on it. It may also already be installed on a bike somewhere...
You can use the RS one at a pinch. That's unlikely to be a mover for a few more months. Talking of which :innocent: ?
It was a useful exercise though. :D I was about to order some other parts & have discovered a secret stash I'd forgotten about.
Also have one only valve adjustment bolt & nut, if you are still to get those.
Padmei
18th July 2011, 20:49
I got 4 new adjuster bolts today along with some unmunted clutch bolts - I must say they were a lovely sight to behold.
I'mnot in too much of a hurry forthe bung- I'll improvise for now.
I was bloody tempted to take a pic of Nordies emporium the other day when I was trespassing- unbelievable to think he can actually fit bikes in there.
This character has a few 2ndhand parts on Tme

Just putting the feelers out there - but at some stage I may wanna swap a BMW 21” cross-laced rim for a 19” one.
Of course we’d have to find someone game enough to respoke them and this wouldn’t happen for a little while yet, but let me know if you’re interested.

I can't imagine why on earth you would want to do that but GSERS might be interested. He's done one of his bikes already.

Not that common, but often used on RTW bikes so that you could get even panniers /weight distribution (otherwise the exhaust side needed a standout).

looking for a good road/offroad
Padmei
5th August 2011, 20:22
Hey onestop
If you look on the tyres thread at the top they give you a pretty good idea.
I myself run Dunlop 606s on the front of anything I ride as I've found them great offroad, great on road (I dont commute,do long tours or ride a lot in the rain however). They are knobblies so will wear quicker than a road biased tyre however are very confidence inspiring on gravel- which is my greatest request.
Others run a similar tyre the MT21 however I find them too soft for a heavy bike under braking & wear quite quickly. I also find they aren't very good past half worn (we tend to run tyres down to the canvas down here)
The bikes with roady Shinko 705s I've ridden have handled superbly on the road & gravel butnot on mud.

His prices have been a bit off. You can get a NEW NYLON (PAINTABLE) HPN TANK from Touratech (http://www.touratech.com/shops/001/index.php?cPath=3_40_300&osCsid=961a3e628a6b790fcd866cd1fc557354) for EUR799. Cross reference here (http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/fiche.aspx) to check it’s what you’re after.
Just checked motorworks.co.uk - unlike motobins you can just search by the BMW part no. and it will return results with their corresponding numbers. Also looks considerably cheaper than what you posted.
*edit: ah, I see. I thought you’d posted pounds, so yeah about 75ish.

No - the red 1993 NZ new R80GS advertised recently by Ray Holmes at Mount Motorcycles. Fit a G/S tank and headlight/instrument binnacle and I guess you then have a Basic!
He will sell my 1992 R100RS Last edition for me", on behalf, so there is space in the garage.
After three years of grief and ruined rides with my 2007 Dakar it will be good to be able to get back into the big South Island rides, with Debbie on the back, during 2012. How is that for progress, right back where I was in 2000 (except I have progressed to Paralever I suppose).

Nope. Here's a poor picture of a Basic. Blue frame, white paint, G/S tank & seat, & slightly more robust version of a G/S subframe. No rear rack on the subframe. Paralever suspension, & came with unpainted peanut valve covers. Came with the W/P rear sports shock, & white painted Marozochi front forks.

The T/Me bike a paralever ('88-'89) before they went to the roobars. Actually the blue & white version of the Bumblebee (they also came in red). That one was in Akld I think. I looked at it on T/me before I got the KTM. Remember the painted barrels, & the fact it was imported from the UK.

No it is not. There were only about 3000 Basics assembled. They were a parts bin special put together 1996. I heard that about 20 came to NZ but didn't sell due to the high price. NZ Bike bought them as rental bikes. Mine is one of those. I suppose being the last of the airheads makes them a bit rare, but I don't think they'll have an advantage beyond that. I am just happy if it doesn't depreciate.....much.
This one was part of a BMW display in Garmisch, Bavaria.

Cheers for clearing that up. i didn't think it was but it looked somewhat different from most paras i've seen. It was the white screen & instruments that looked odd.
I love those peanut covers - pity they don't make tuffer ones.
While we're all here... My front collector pipes are rusted thru & cracked. My local bike shop can get a NZ made Y pipe from Muzzys (?) mufflers for about $150 which I thought was pretty good. Except the pipes are for the G/S' I think as they are on the catalogue for 85-89 (I think). Anyway my question is, are the earlier pipes different from the para pipes or should I look elsewhere?

PS I think the basic is a very cool looking bike & runs a close second to the Helmet Schek bikes

I think you need to use the G/S headers as well?. The Para muffler would still fit. There was a discussion on this in the UKGSer (http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=278899) site a short while ago on collectors, & also here (http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=278352), and here (http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=275168).

You can run them up to redline & just a bit above. They are a strong motor. Careful on the downshifts when hard on the brakes - they can clutch hop. At least with the GS you don't get the shafting jacking & drop when on & off the throttle. Throttle off when fully committed to a corner is a no-no on the RS. You'll run wide & lose ground clearance
Just don't dragrace them too much - you'll be able to smell the clutch when it gets hot. :innocent:

The gist of it was that a character always wanted one, found one in Germany, flew out & befriended the seller, an engineer, who along with other more senior engineers worked on the line making the basic. They weren't in fact made up of obsolete parts but retooling in the factory was required to manufacture some parts. As we already know they were 80s rather than 100s due to the universal opinion the 80s were smoother.
An interesting read...

I have to give credit to the designers, this is the easiest motor I have worked on in decades, after working on KTMs this is childs play you can carry out a full service in under an hour.

Thanks guys, look like I should carry on. This is a scratch build frame from top to toe I have cut welded and built everything on it hence the time it has taken so far. The most important part was getting the jig set up so that the swingarm pivot point and the engine are in the correct place and that the steering head was vertical to the pivot point axis having confirmed this now by checking this twice I will continue.
Steve thanks for the links on the other site I dont think there is a GS adv bike build thread on there that I havn't read. Unlike most of those builds they leave and use the original rear subframes which are Bl--dy heavy in themselves. Once I sort out the rear shock and build a rear mount directly at the end of the top main tube I will be modifying and adding on the YZ rear sub frame kilos kilos kilos !!!!! The fuel tank will be in the frame above the gearbox I have done a rough calculation and should get between 12-14 litres in there I think all the wait is going to be low watch this space more pics in 6 months.

Thanks Steve, ambitious project yes but in my former life as a mechanic in business in the 80s engine transplants where my thing I would put a V8 in anything and boy did some of those vehicles go well. To well for some people in the car club. My V8 Vauxhall Victor used to blow away some pretty serious competition and I drove it every day on the road.
Anyway back to the bike build for me the hard part of building the frame is done and it is running true. Now its just a matter of adding on the peripheral parts it will take time but basiclly it is being build from YZ450F and BMW parts even the front YZ guard fits without any modification misses the front of the engine by 15-20mm. If it rides good and handle OK then it will probably get one of the 1100 front screens and headlights I have lying around mounting points already installed. Checked up on road registering it the other day and thats not a problem either just through some more money at it but thats jumping the gun first thing first.

Thanks Padmei, I will do a write up on ADV once I get closer to the other end so that it will flow and people dont have to wait months for the next instalment. I have a lot booked marked and check them regularly and nothing seems to be happening. What starts off with a hiss and a roar ends up fading away and seems to stop Life has to carry on so this will take time.
I want if it all works out to plan to eventually use this as an adv bike. Lets face it they aren't really made for off road trails at 240 Kgs they require alot of concentration to keep them upright. I have done the 21" front wheel conversion on the 1100 and that made a huge difference to off road ability but the telelever suspension will only smooth out so many bumps maybe if I through a set of Ohlins at it it may help but $3000 ??????? I should be well on the road to finishing this for hopefully not to much more before going down the registration path.
Any way back to the build. I hope to use both the tank and seat ( with some more padding added) from the YZ If I can get the tank to sit where I want without having to modify it I will use it for petrol but I may have to cut the bottom out of it get it to sit right so it will then be there for show. It will give me more room to put electrics and airbox etc and maybe a battery on each side where the YZ radiators would normally be thats the plan anyway I think I am being conservative on the estamation on the size of the tank I can fit above the gearbox I have got over 300mm of width above the gearbox and tappers up from there If I remember correctly the width at the top of the frame at the back is around 170mm.
I might throw together a box out of ply that will fit and put a plastic bag in it and measure the volume.
As for the swingarm pivot point it was all made from scratch I spent many hours on the computer with pictures over-layed with lines and measurments to set it all up print it out and then stare at them for hours deciding where to start and how to go about it. Measure 50 times and cut once there is about 7 Mtrs of tube in there and only fillings left on the garage floor.

I'm looking at the same thing so will be interested...
Couple of comments: the R80 calls for a 28 amp hour battery.. it starts and runs happily on the 12 amp hour KTM battery, the extra amp hours are only needed if it's hard to start (I think I am correct on this), I am looking at the Motobatt 20 amp size as it's $60 cheaper than the 28 amp.
Check it will physically fit the battery container and the leads will reach the terminals DAMHIK.
I would expect a good condition and well tuned engine to start on the first turn of the starter or kick, it should be no problem with a smaller battery.

I'm gonna research this a bit.
My bike starts pretty easily & isn't used as a commuter - only a Sunday avo bike so i don't need a lot of stop starting storage. I may even try my new MX type battery & see how that goes. A source has replied to me that motobatts can be installed on their side due to their unique manufacturing design which is interesting however I will double check on that. AGM or fibreglass mat batteries seem to be the way of the future.
I'm not worried about the length of leads as I will prob make some others up to suit.
I have had a look around & Antons site seems to provide the most specific advice. If you look right down the bottom he has some good calcs.
He seems to think 1amp/hr is all that is required for starting thereby once the alternator is up & running, charging the sytem you'll all good unless the draw from many appliances is greater than the output from the alternator. A 12A/H one is what he uses on his K75. Interesting.

Pre 81 starters are rated at 270 Amp max draw, post 81, 320 Amp max (info from a manual), asuming you have a 10 amp hour battery, IE: will provide 10 amps for one hour at 12volts, it will provide 600 Amps for one minute or about 2 minutes of starter at max draw.
I'm looking at 20 amp hours batteries as that gives me about 4 minutes of starting at max draw.

Interesting.
http://www.largiader.com/articles/battery.html
They can be installed lying on their side have one in a bike at present and Mottobat have a battery that suits the monolever R80G/S. I will be needing one soon as mine needs the charger too often when not used for a week or so.

Have kept a few 'spares' in case of unfortunate incidents or failures. Sort of seems likely will always have a G/S ( managed to have one or two in my ownership fairly constantly since 1990 ) Not too much in the way of surplus to requirement bits now. I dismantled very doggy GS to get its frame and forks a few years ago to fix a written off low km bike. I'd also built up a stock of bits I decided were never really going to be needed. Still find the odd bit now and then that I get rid of though. You have a G/S Basic with a non standard headlight I have seen in Atawhai area?

He said 'Ray had the bike and was going to do it up anyway, but I asked him to do a couple of things that I wanted and to paint it that colour. The bike ended up with higher risers than are on it in the pics, plus pivot pegs, which are are a bit lower. Rear shock is nothing flash, can`t remember the name. It also had the lower first, higher fifth gearbox thing done.
The blue GS you can see behind the `before` bike is Ray`s personal bike, which he has had for a few years now; it owes him about $24,000'.
At the end of it all the bike didn't fit him very well, so Ray arranged to find another buyer.
'There is a 100GSPD lurking in the shadows, that I may be able to get fairly cheaply. The plan at the moment is to remove the fairing, fit a round (big) genuine headlight, small screen, low front guard, acewell instruments, single seat and rack. The seat will immediately be sent to be raised and re-profiled. Mechanically, it will be twin plugged, 1070 kit, big alternator, -/+ gearbox, plus the myriad things that Ray does to bikes that make them so good. Suspension will be played with by Ray, which means a decent fork brace and trimmed standard fork springs, I think. Basically, I`m going to let him do his thing, with a bit of input on cosmetics. Colour will most likely be blue frame, white panels and guards.'

Yes it is a PD, someone must have removed the stickers at some stage. I might grab the tank and the seat and send it on its way again. But it almost seems a shame to break it up. I'll get to see it tomorrow, but it will involve a ferry trip in the rain by the looks of it.

Heidenau... I'm currently in the process of trying the K76... jury is still out, but doesn't look they'll get a good review... need more time to see however.

On a bit of a tangent as usual but the R80 is on the road and had its first gravel run a couple of days ago and I have to admit to being very pleased with it. I'm running road tyres so didn't expect too much but it copes with the hardpack and shallow gravel well and only gets a bit squirrelly in the deeper stuff, nothing like the south island rocks you call gravel, the more dignified north island stuff. :bleh:
The rear slides controllably but without a slipper clutch it's not quite the same for throwing into corners.... there isn't much power to power slide with either, it's more a genteel wiggle of the arse end. The front is great, the brakes are progressive and when you lock the front it just slides around in the direction you are pointing, none of this trying to high side you, very civilised, gets a bit messy at anything over 100 tho as the front end struggles for grip a bit.
It's great for standing on the pegs too, I feel like a proper adventure rider now!

Next, find some mud.
For Godsake man leave the poor thing alone you power hungry KTM rider:(

My "new" R80GS was only returning 40 mpg with gentle riding. It has allegedly had the carburettors rebuilt this year but this economy suggests maybe not very well.
Ordered the Bing #6 kit (everything up to and including new floats) on the 20th and this arrived this week. Whatever may be wrong or worn, this will make it good.
Love the way these come in a long plastic wrap with compartments for each component.
Have done this a half dozen times over the years but not recently and always find it nerve wracking. Too many tiny overtightened or peened threads and tight O rings to get over sharp edges. The small hammer is for removing and fitting the float pivot, not wacking the carb! Even found the tiny drift I made out of a nail years ago to ease this job!
Right carb finished this afternoon without any disasters. Left one awaits the new year (tomorrow). Please, please, please let this go smoothly. Some close moments today with over tight screws - had to use a stone to tweak a scewdriver for a perfect fit for maximum drive without damage in one case.

Checked the carb diaphragms as per Steve's suggestion. Both look good. I'm suspecting the ICU now. It's getting quite hot. How hot do they get?

Mission accomplished.
After one backtrack, RH throttle butterfly "slipped" while securing it back in place with resulting air leak and fast idle, bike back together and running properly now. Torqued the heads, checked the valves and checked the timing. Finally, squirted the back of the "beancan" with some CRC electrical fluid and it seems to have stopped holding onto the revs when closing the throttle so perhaps this freed off a sticky advance/retard.
Economy has shifted from about 13 km/l (37 mpg) to 17.6 km/l (50 mpg), which is about right for an 800, albeit pretty poor for a bike this gutless!
Recomissioned my partly dried out Motion Pro mercury carb balencer using some donated mercury but with two minor spills of this highly toxic and difficult to corral back up again liquid, during this process I think it is time to retire this and get a safer and less environmentally damaging one. I see Motion Pro now make a non mercury (safe) manometer balancer so perhaps one of these is in my future.
Terrible gearbox (second worst in seven two valve twins owned), so after the carb test ride I refilled with full synthetic 75-90. This flatters a poor flat twin gearbox more than a mineral 80 or 90, so we will see. However, quite a lot of fluff on the drain magnet, lots more than I have ever seen before, so perhaps more drastic surgury is going to be needed in the future..............
Starting to remember why I moved from an R80G/S to a new F650 Dakar in 2001!

Just an update. Igor has made contact with Darryl Applegate (BMWOR) at Whangarei. He may have a spare ICU to test Igors. It isn't the carb diaphrams.

Just finished cleaning up tools and draining the old gearbox oil into my storage container. A sheen of fine bronze filings in the bottom corner of the drain pan, so you might be welcome to it! Something tells me that synthetic gearbox oil is probably not going to smooth this one out.
Cosmetics and chassis are well above average though.

Update: Daryl came to meet us. Unfortunately he did not have a working ICU at hand, but we managed to rule out the coil and some dodgy wiring to it.
What's left is to test with a working ICU from Daryl's bike once we can get ours to his place. Still haven't ruled out the bean can.
Bike runs strong, until the ignition seemingly cuts out, then backfires loudly when it cuts in again.
Thanks everyone for your offers of help so far. Will keep you updated.

Went around to Darryl's this morning and tested his ICU, ruled that out and discovered it was the bean can. Swapped ours for Darryl's and we are now on the road again!
Huge thanks to Darryl, Steve and Alex for the help. And also to Jay & Cia for rescuing us and putting us up for the night.

Here's a pic of Kane on his R100 at the Nelson Port races this year. I have to admit when I get on mine for a pootle there is no way I could imagine a BMW could be as fast as his.
When I saw his entered I mistakenly thought he would be sitting around mid field - but nope he was ripping it right off the front. He couldn't seem to hold off the Guzzi tho.

It's a quick bike with a good rider but BMW twins have a long race history, look up the Butler and Smith bikes or the multiple world championships in sidecars to name a few
His is probably the quickest one currently racing but there are 3 others I know about as well

The Guzzi has way more power I think. I watched as the guzzi took him on the outside of one the back corners. I asked Kane how many horse power & what kinda speeds he gets out of the bmw but he didn't know. He hasn't bothered putting it on a dyno.
I was watching how low he was cornering on this tight track & the heads still had a fair bit of daylite between them & the road. I was surprised.
Good pics nordie.

The Guzzi runs methanol (or used to) and Bernard rides it pretty hard, at Greymouth Kane was leading it for a bit

I have been at the front universal yokes with the dremel and relieved the articulation angels. The 1150GS ADV is rated at 220mm of rear wheel travel. I am going to restrict this to 250mm I could get another 10-15mm but I think 250 should be OK The front forks have 300mm of travel but vertical wheel travel is 275mm.
I searched the net on the question and the 4WD guys are running up to 25Deg out of universals on there drive lines I am running 22Deg so I think it should be OK time will tell I suppose.

Thanks Aslan, how is your shoulder going? What did Howie do to his leg? You guys have been knocking yourselves around. I hope I have had my share of that when I was younger. Back to the bike yeah I am happy so far, had a stand on the foot pegs today and I was surprised that the bars felt in the right place I might just get some risers to lift them up abit. I thought they would have had to come back towards me a alot but I had to push the bars forward so thats good. It feels small.

So glad I reverted to a two valve GS after a decade of fuel injected GS singles!
Gearbox (1993 R80GS) removed today to find and rectify the source of noise, glittery flakes in the oil and sludge on the drain plug.
The gearbox input shaft splines needed greasing anyway.......and a good chance to check electrical connections, reseat the heat sink etc while waiting for the diagnosis and then the parts to arrive. Hope I don't need this corner of the garage for a few weeks.

Hi GSers, I took an impact on my Ankle on the same part of the ride Where Aslan hurt his shoulder. I didn't actually think it was that bad, like a couple of Nurofen Morning and night for 2 days then no more pain killers. Rode for another 10 days around the south island, then back to work and that was when the Ankle started to swell up quite bad as it was out of bike boots. Xray showed I have broken a bit of bone off in a non load bearing area. So in a cast for 6 weeks.
Your bike build looks like it is progressing well.
