Looks good in black, but red is better...:)
I need a brake reservoir protector for the PD, I see one there and am looking on eBay...Two different varieties, R100, and the PD version, either one will do.

Touratech NZ/Aus doesn't even stock half the stuff Germany has and you cannot buy the items either it seems. When you type in part numbers to search, they don't exist?
You cannot buy from Touratech Germany anymore can you because of this new set up here...

WHY ?????????????????????
Best advice would be to remove the mirror that mounts through the master cylinder and fit something else.
knocking the mirror off destroys the master cylinder ask me how I know.
Touratech you could try Wunderlich I think thats how you spell it.

It is a 1991, New Zealand new...123,000 on the clock.
I really like them, always have....I think I discussed my like for them when I met Eddie a few years ago. Even in brown it looked cool...
But red, another story...
I have had a look at the Dakar bike, wondering if I could still get Texaco, Marlboro and a Playboy decal from somewhere..:)

Hi there WT what is the seat height & peg to seat height on your PD ??
You better remove those quoted pictures otherwise you will get a warning!
I am 6 3 and can flat foot it,seat to peg is a bit cramped, but I don't find it too bad,i need bar risers to make standing more comfortable.
So WT,do have the new style switches(indicator switches both sides?)

The height from peg to seat is approx 52cm. As for the height overall, it was 95cm on the centrestand, so knock off about 30cm give or take.

No....I do not. I wanna get them though, should I ? I guess new grips and combination blocks?
Bet they are expensive too....Seen some on eBay for other models. I don't know enough about electrics to know whether 1150gs, 1100gs, ST etc will fit. No ABS of course.

The "new style" switches actually came out on the k100 in about 85 or so,i think the r bikes got them in 92 or so,eddies r100 had them, not sure about retro fitting,my r100gspd is a twin of yours cept the seat is recovered and the front fender is all white, and the tank decals are quite faded

Might be able to be retro fitted...Bloody expensive though, not worth it me thinks...Geez!

Don't know why you would want to. A lot more complex than it at first appears. You would need a new loom & indicator flasher unit. It is not plug & play.
My recommendation is not to chop that bike around. It's too nice. Unlike Gus was. You will lose value.

Yep, had already considered this after looking at the bike this morning. Thanks for the comments re - it's too nice...:) It is...
I am going to leave it as is, ride it and not farkle it or dismantle it and lose nuts and bolts in the process.
As happens in too many forums, owners can be distracted by 'snowed' in ADV riders who decide to re-invent the wheel and post so-called improvements or scare the hell out of other owners thinking every model of bike is gonna throw a third gear, seal, doo-hickey, balancer shaft seal....etc.
Ride it, change the oil frequently (10,000) km, ride it and keep it.....
I will be changing oil more frequently...(but I was recommended this interval) :weird:
There is one thing that I would spring for though (when I win lotto)....Single seat and rack system to allow more luggage and make it more valuable as it would have true dual capabilities...single rider, two-up etc.
Box'a'bits
5th January 2014, 16:07
The single seat is reputed to be less comfortable than the dual seat, partially because it locks you into one position. I keep looking at the Touratech version with in built rack but that is more $ than I have readily available. :(
Farkle away - but keep the stock parts & make sure you can bolt them all back together before you can sell. Some well executed farkles & improvements for the bike are good. Phil's is an example of these. The farkles aren't obvious unless you know what to look for, & improve the overall utility of the bike.
I'd look at an uprated front brake if that hasn't already been done - a 4 pot brembo from a later BMW fits with a small amount of machine work. An uprated shock would also been good - I think you still have a stocker. Don't go Hagon for the GS.
I change the oils every 3-5k kms, & the oil filter every 2nd change. Remember that it's air cooled, so the engine goes thru a great temp range. Oil is cheap - 4T Castrol, or any 10w-40 dino car oil with lots of zinc in it (SG rating, nothing later). Don't use synthetic - the seals will start to leak. Gearbox & diff GL-5 80/90w every 5-10k kms dependent on water & dust contamination.

I get a bulk lot of filters in - from the UK if I'm doing an order, or from Porirua (Trademe - ANP209 $29) if not. I use the Mahle OX36 filter (OEM) - not keen on the cheaper filters - seen some collapse.

Have you read the $2,000 o-ring (http://www.largiader.com/tech/filters/canister.html)? Good to keep an eye on the filter cannister depth, even on high mileage bikes. Gus just uses the o-ring + 1 shim, no gasket.

for what they are i think a decent front brake rear shock and some work on the front suspension.I think a PD is worth keeping stock looking as they a sorta iconic bike, and a damn useable one at that.Mine is far from mint but i aim to keep it as stock looking and undamaged as possible.

Or in fact BMW bikes....
When I key the ignition, all of the lights are on except the neutral light. It randomly happens.
I flick the gearshift lever up and down and eventually it comes on and shows neutral...
I figure that the switch is faulty...(that wasn't too difficult)
I then read http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=806428
and http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=798471
and just like my Suzuki, hold the clutch ever in and the bike starts anyway....the bike is fooled! and will start in gear or out of gear.
Just keep doing this or get the switch fixed? Anyone else have this issue or have had this issue?
Is it a costly fix? Or just leave it alone and forget about it....
Box'a'bits
7th January 2014, 14:00
The neutral switch is just sticking. You could just try changing the gearbox oil before you replace it.
The switch is at the bottom (middle) of the gearbox, behind the rear engine mounts. An 'easy' way to get at it is to remove the rear engine mount studs, take out the engine spacer, & its behind that. Bit of a PITA to replace it though.

Thanks. Yes, I read your posts...Much appreciated. I am a bit lost at present, I have asked nicely for someone to walk me through the process. I am a visual person, learn alot more by watching it being done. So....I have asked eddie...we will see. Oils/fluids, I would like to see it done. I know my way around a KTM and Te610e and the DR, but this thing scares me a little, even though they are a simple bike....Jus don't want it to seize of leave a frikkin big pool of oil on the floor somewhere..
Your posts and others have sort of made me a little wary, although helpful in part. ....(I gotta stop reading so much)......:eek5:

I bastardised mine & got rid of as much as I could bmw electrically wise- don't get me started on the stupid wiring on these bikes. I haven't had a lot of luck with my neutral switches since i replaced the old ones with new ones. i wonder if they had a batch of bad switches? I can pick neutral now by the change in engine note.
Anyway i don't have a clutch switch or neutral lockout - of course the only time I have ever started it in gear was when nutso was around:pinch:
They also have a stupid relay that knocks the headlite off when you push the starter- FFS.
anyway don't listen to anything I say - I'll lead you wrong. keep it stock, replace what you need to & above all worry about every new noise

can you live with the way it is for a while? I think like Nutso it would be a real pita to replace in situ.

Once it has warmed up and I finally catch it after shaking across the garage floor :chase:, it rides nice and sounds great! Especially when I put the foot down. It growls....
But you are right, you are always listening for sounds out of the ordinary when riding.....As I have a couple of old bikes, if they be quiet, then maybe I need to worry? ;)

Gearbox and Diff oil - Where do you source this? Best price etc? I got the 4T Castrol in my garage, there must be a few different versions as mine is semi synthetic 15w-40 4T Castrol. Dino oil is what I look for SG...I found the guy who stocks the filters...Thanks.

Good price too...
PS...Forgive my ignorance...Why are these hinged? Purpose and design? Thanks. Is it for each side of the engine?
Box'a'bits
11th January 2014, 20:46
The Mahle OX 36 filter is the one you are looking for. There are 2 sizes of filter - for bike with & without an oll cooler. These were then divided into straight & hinged. The hinged ones were originally for the faired RT & RS bikes, but BMW have since rationalised the filter stocks. So now the OEM oil filter ones are all hinged.
I just buy the gearbox oils at my local Repco. They occassionally do a percentage off everything, & if I am organised I'll stock up then.

Was going to sell the KLR, but not sure whether I can part with it, and anyway its a good thing to have a big road bike and a lightweight offroad weapon in the same stable.
Also, I might not like the BMW, my one and only ride on one was on Schmidt for about 100 metres. Can't for the life of me remember whether it was a good or bad experience:weird:
Padmei
14th January 2014, 19:15
I found the main differences were the cramped feeling I had sitting on Schmidt compared with Gonzo - taller seat & lowered pegs helped a lot.
The weight is more esp with all the bull bars & crap on the front but is nowhere as top heavy even with a full tank. When riding you won't notice it too much.
You'll prob hit your carbs with your shins a few times before you remember they're there.
Do not -repeat- do not throw your leg out frontwards when out of control round a corner & try to MX style it back under control - it fricking hurts & the bruising stays for weeks
You'll prob get as many people stopping to talk about the PD as the KLR - they are both machines that make men envious & women aroused.
You may crash while trying to find how to turn off the indicators while riding.
The drive is very smooth due to the shaft- you'll notice a nice difference but can't put your finger on it - I have solved that for you. You will at some stage curse the driveshaft & final drive & wish for the simplicity of an oily chain.
You will like the bike cos once you own one you are not allowed to say anything other than (in a deadpan Germanic accent of course)
"They are the most reliable bike in the world
- they were the first bike that allowed people to ride around the world
- it could never be done on another bike & I refute any evidence to the contrary
- BMW engineers could never design something that wasn't perfect
- it is alright to spend a lot of money on farkles due to the amount of hard core riding I do/ plan to do/ wish to do

Be nice to your bikes  Now I have to take my bike to the dreaded dealer (well, they're not so bad, it's the paper with numbers on it that they give me at the end) and let them work their magic...

So are all the lerners are racing out to buy rattly old airheads, or do the owners perceive that because their rattly old airhead is LAMS they are now that more valuable?
sorry, lurker on this thread, when I grow up (my licence goes from yellow to green) I want a boxer GS......
Being relatively new to motorcycle land I was shocked and horrified at prices of bikes compared to cars, economy of scale thing I suppose.
Anyway if you dont want to ride a 250 (1.98m, 110kgs, so no thanks...) you at least have the option of some nice mid sized bikes now with the LAMS set up. So yeah, owners of these erstwhile not so expensive types of bikes have a whole new captive audience for their wares. Its either that or pay $9k up for a new LAMS approved non 250. Go to a dealer for anything decent on the LAMS list 2nd hand and they were either out of ideas or rubbing their hands with glee depending on stock. Give it a few years and the second hand market will have a few more models floating around to settle things.

It seems that some of you have had a similar issue? in the past....
I have a front brake - rear light will not work when I squeeze brake lever?
The rear brake light does work when using the foot brake.
Is the switch possibly faulty or knackered?
I see that I have to remove tank and undo from brake lever and unplug assembly?
Could the contacts be loose or worn/corroded?
Are they bloody expensive and is there a way to test said suspected knackered switch?
Thanks all.

Would the front not then be too high?

Nope, you need to put a spacer in the cartridge to stop it extending to full height, so that you retain stock geometry. You also need to chop a bit off the spring, which has the side benefit of upping the spring rate. Then you also need to figure out brakes & wheels (easy if you run the DRZ wheel, but you'll neeed bigger brakes).
Technically you need an engineers cert for all of that.

I want some new tyres for the R100gs, in the past (previous bikes) I have run knobs all the time (MT21 on front, T63 on rear) but am a bit sick of the wear rate. With the fat pig I want to be able to ride Muriwai beach (sand obviously) and some of the surrounding access roads (more sand) but want a tyre with more road going ability.
For the general gravel roads and light mucky stuff I really don't need much more that a road tyre so has anyone got any suggestions?
I do realise it's all compromise but I want to pick your brains so I can blame someone else if the tyres I fit leave me digging a huge pit in the sand and requiring a helicopter for extraction.

Not sure what sizes it runs?
GSA uses the usual 110/80/19 and 150/70/17. I consider the likes of TKC as knobblies, Heidenau K60 as intermediates, then the rest as road biased in varying degrees. Only problem with the K60 is that it's not flash in the wet (almost downright scary) but has good life.

For Road use Pirelli MT90 on the front and I am going to try a Kenda K761 for the rear $99 from Cycletreads. The Pirelli MT 90 only comes in a 120/90-17 rear it will work but a little narrow.
Off road or in the sand use Pirelli MT21 front and rear they are cheap as well.
Michelin T63 on the rear of the airheads sounds like a Landrover on town and country tyres, more noise than the MT21's.
Best dual purpose tyre is still the TKC80 not to expensive in the Airhead sizes if You shop around but the rear wear fast then lasts when tread gets lower but no traction of road.
Tried Metzler Sahara3 the OEM tyre and no better than the MT90's off the seal and don't last that well. Pirelli used to make the ST90 the were a great tyre as good as Meztler Tourance's which are to expensive.
Hope. This Helps

Try the Mitas E09. Tyre size is generally 130x80x17. Should be able to pick that for about $180ish. I get circa 6.5k kms out of it, which matches the MT21 front I run. The front is non directional - you need to swap it around when the knobs start to wear. I like the combination as a go anywhere any time set up.
You could also try a Mitas E07 rear, though those tend to get square as they wear.
By comparison I can only get 3-5 to 4.5 k kms out of a T63, & the MT21 rear - forget it...

I liked the v rubber slightly knobby thing on the front when I first got it.i think if you want to ride the big thing in the sand a pretty aggressive front knobby is mandatory

Hi Eddie
I have been using some really cheap black steel bars that are at the local bike shop. I think they may be ATV bars that they keep for farm vehicles & do bend in a crash but at $35ish appeal to my cheap nature. I originally started using them on Gonzo as they are nice & high.
Exhaust spanner I recommend a cold chisel & really big fricking hammer - the bigger the better - those fins would never ever break off.
Gaiters for the forks? dunno

What are the other models so I don't have to look thru all the manufacturers sites?

Have a look at the Kenda k784s. Look like tkc80, but cheaperereer. I had a rear for the last dusty and it was best performing tyre yet, and pretty good price on cycletreads at the moment. Looking at them myself for the gs, but don't really wanna go that knobbly as i want to do a fair few road miles.

I had looked at the Mitas range but have never run them, what's their wet grip like? I like the MT21 on the front, interestingly I had never considered reversing them, I've always ended up with really smeared knobs from braking, reversing sounds a good idea!
Hey Mister can I come too?
I have no idea what tyres I have on the ST..but they got thru the slippery bits at Riverhead and up 90 mile beach....
I'd be thinkin' you need to fit an on board compressor too for sand...
You're running T63s or TKCs I think (from that quick look a while back) Onboard compressor already fitted!
Hope Hampton Downs was good, I got tangled up in organising my garage and building a garden shed (appalling excuse I know, but it's all I've got)
Find a K180, better grip in all those conditions than a knob.
Thanks Motu, I will have a look (Kenda I assume?).

I've not had any issues with wet grip, but then I don't really push them in the wet either...

It's at the brother in laws now getting a the subframe made up. Build thread here: http://www.flyingthechair.co.nz/showthread.php?tid=5
I might call Kane at some stage and see if he can supply any of the bits, support local and all that.
Mine was ( is) an r75/5 and the frame is no where near as substantial as the R80 frame. I didn't have a 'subframe" as it was pre internet and you just did stuff.
Fun things to ride but you need wide bars and a steering damper. The Velorex looks lighter than the Watsonian so a bit of weigh in it will help riding solo.
Are you dropping the FD down ? I fitted an R50 one to mine.
cheers

Fitting wider bars today, the same as I have on my DR.
I'll put a 20kg bag of something in the back when I start riding it.
I haven't considered dropping the FD down yet, I'll see how it goes as is.

I'd like to have that bike.
I think you will make a tidy packet off that bike my friend.
In fact I would estimate that bike would go for around $9grand

You can have mine for nine grand, including two tanks, two seats and the racetech front suspension.

Price, the million $ ? I was going to put it on TMe with a start at $7k and see what happened. I do have my eye on something else and a sale prior to buying that would save me some domestic questioning so make me an offer.
Those pics as always make her look shinier than it is but all is in good order. I have barkbusters, some spare rocker boxes with welded up holes (obviously been used properly in the past), some oil filters and the usual box of bits and bobs.
I suspect there are harder springs in the front as it is not all soggy which apparently they are as standard, WP shock on rear (standard fitment). Recent service showed no dramas. Battery is a bit long in the tooth but is still doing the job. Front has a tubeless TKC80 with about 500km on it, rear is a Mitas E-08 with plenty of life left and a front to match loafing in the shed. Tank does have a small dent which would probably pop out fairly easily.
Will be home in Auckland on 23rd Dec.
