Sounds about right.
Factor in a charge out rate of $45+ an hour for the labour alone and it's easy to see where the $$$$ go!
If it is just the tank/guards/sidecover(s) that you want painted you can save a bit by taking them off (get a keen knowledgable friend to do it if you don't know how).

I recommend Dave @ ABFX in Vogel St. He does awesome work, and can match & repair two pot paint without doing the whole part completely. In all, a clever cookie!
Heh, Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away, I paid a guy to paint my bike for about half what the shops had quoted, Then I entered it in a bike show with "for Sale" sign on it, While it was on display someone knocked it with their bike and an area of paint about 4 inches square fell off.

Have a crack at it yourself. The paint is expensive but you only need half a litre to do a whole bike, less if it has chrome guards. I've painted a couple of bikes and get better every time I do it. You could paint your bike half a dozen times for $1000 so it doesn't matter if you f*%k it up the first three times, go on have a go...
It might be a bit budget but I bought a compressor for $150 from super cheap and a spray gun from the mega store and they work fine. It probably wouldn't stand up to commercial workloads but it is fine for painting one bike a year for a few years yet. I use the same compressor for the air brush and it works fine for that too. I'd have painted both my bikes for well under a grand including the paint and the gear.
hmm might be worth a go if i could get the colour it looks to be layerd the base being light blue , the painters created this colour to do a car its an awesome colour iv had alot of comments about it so might just have to wait and save the 800.00 . the paint jobs good just a couple of big chips from the guy taking it to a rally right after it was painted ! your paint job looks good wired1.
