Well I've got 20cm of the stuff here and a lot more in the drifts (buried the nose of my tractor in one!!) - SH8 had quite a bit as you go over Round hill but it looks like the snow ploughs have been through since I was down there. Hasn't been much more snow through the day but sounds like there might be more tonight and then it looks like this big high is going to come across and the whole fucking lot will freeze solid.

Sounds like you fullers down south have a pretty good covering. Little Bro (El Scooto on here) is trying to get from Te Anau to Chch today. Left Te Anau about 8 this morning and only just into Oamaru now (9 hours later). Had manageable snow between Te Anau and Mossburn then ok to Gore. Got turned back by a cop at just north of Gore so headed up the road towards Raes Junction. After putting on the set of rental chains he had to buy in Te Anau for his work 2wd hilux got within about 20kms of Raes then hit drifts about 0.5m deep. He turned back to Gore to find people going past the barriers on SH1 so gave it ago and got through a piece of piss. Seems that they were being a bit protective on SH1
Take care and keep warm guys.
Cheers R

brrrr, its 12 up here.
... when are you doing your Oz trip? Might be a bit warmer over there.
How's the snow and ice?
It's cold... really cold...

Hi ,
Fly out on Monday week. Back in a fornight later. Have been checking the roads, damage around Cessnock in the Hunter region. Seems the roads are o.k. but lots of damage about. The Canberra overnight temp is similar to what we've had aroung here -4 / -6 but with it being dry over there the riding should be ok. Have to spend another week at work before I can set off! Will have an opinion on the Trans Alp when I get back. Cheers
I hope tomorrow is going to be warm and sunny.
We've got a 3-hour Cross Country (my first) to do![]()
This afternoon timg (Transalp), a new biker on a F650 & myself (Freewind) had a crack at getting to Erewhon from Ashburton. Pic taken by Tim.
We were very "optimistic" - the sun was out, we were well wrapped up & all three bikes had heated grips. The snow itself wasn't bad but previous vehicles wheel marks became sheets of ice, even on the gravel. We turned back before Lake Camp.
My Tourance front let me down badly at one point but at least the snow made for a soft landing. Tim's Mitas E07's looked to perform well in these conditions.
Good on you XF650, at least you had a taste of the ground on the snow; I had a similar one last tuesday, on a slippery meridian and it was tarmac what finally stopped us coming down. The trannie landed on my knee... Our egos are bruised but we all good for getting soaked next weekend on the wwww... Cool photo by the way
later,
Windboy.
