Tuning makes all the difference. My 1400 just gained about 25% more fuel economy from a remap on the dyno at TripleZee after changing the muffler.

I think that a lot of the "my 600 used more gas than my 1000" carry-on is probably down to variations in tuning, rather than the engine displacement. I'd say it'd be rare to see a bike that was really well tuned. Most of them will be off somehow, wasting fuel due to some piece of noisy bling, etc.

So I suspect the whole argument is a bit pointless, and that it's all much of a muchness. Any given bike can vary enormously in its fuel economy from changes to breathing setup and silly shit like Power Commanders with maps downloaded from the interwebs.

Some people just can't seem to comprehend that they do not have the right to be unoffended in their lives.

Not at all. Custom ECUs are usually necessary if you're going to do anything to a motor. (Although Suzukis since 2003 or so can have the fuelling remapped in the stock engine computer via one of those Teka Tune gizmos.)

I'm just dubious about the common practice of sitting at home and loading them with fuelling and ignition control data that may or may not have worked on some other bike on the other side of the world.

There's a lot of differences between devices as well. I've run the factory ECU remapped, Power Commander, and the Yoshi cube. I'm running a few logical mods including full system, cams etc - but ironically the most time has been spent working out the off idle / wooly low down response (after removing all the flapper valve stuff). After a bit of time, it's pretty good now. She fuels hungrier than a stocker, but even stock they're not wonderful. I spent time getting as much of a torque increase in the end - it results in much fatter power, accessible anywhere.

I'm not competent enough to work out custom maps etc - I have a full Yoshi japan race system for the 600, cams, cam adjusters - and I'll be using a PC (thanks Cajun!). I'm actually using advice from Cajun about maps - trial and error - as opposed to uber-expensive dyno time.

Factory fueling is focused on noise regs, emissions etc. Without those, you can find better power and throttle response. It just takes dollars...
It’s diametrically opposed to the sanitised existence of the Lemmings around me in the Dilbert Cartoon hell I live in; it’s life at full volume, perfect colour with high resolution and 10,000 watts of amplification.

And bloody good on you, too!
    R6 is a great bike.

I hope the OP test rides a few, and gets the bike HE wants

My step from a CBR 250 to a GSX-R 600 was (still is) somewhat mindblowing. For me, riding the GSX-R still feels like sleeping with an axe-murderer. She's pretty, incredible in bed, and all your mates envy you, but one day, she's gonna shake her pretty little ass and do her damnedest to kill you...

My thoughts would be that the step to a 600 will keep you in smiles for some years to come...

This is the thing that people can't appreciate when coming up from a 250. You're only one hamfisted twist of the throttle away from highside city.

Any bike 600cc or larger has the ability to rip the tyre loose from the tarmac. The larger the engine, the easier it is and the further it will step out before it bites.

I enjoy riding the RPM and getting the most out of my bike so don't really need the extra power. If I was a lazy rider that doesn't like changing gears or was doing a lot of two-up I'd go for the the thou but then I probably wouldn't be after a hardcore sportsbike.

You're looking at sub 4sec 0-100km/h for the GSX-R600 and probably a lowish 11's 1/4 mile. That's farkin fast in anyone's terms. Unless you've done a shitload of miles on the 250 (say 25000km+ over two years or more) it's a way big enough jump.

Off topic... but dubious is about right. Maps from the other side of the world will not be accurate for NZ, simple as that. Our fuel is richer than theirs, so the maps generally make the bikes run rich.

That said, my custom tuned zx10 was still using 6.5-7.5L / 100km. Can't have been me, surely? The KTM is going to have a little chat to Triple Zee soon, it uses even more fuel than the zx10 (and has 2/3 of the power)

For newbies coming up from a 250, any 600+ cc bike and your brain won't be able to comprehend the speed of a bigger bike initially, easy as that...
