Learner suitable roads or trails close to Hamilton

    Come on you waikato guys

Spill the beans on any decent learner suitable roads or trails close to Hamilton, if possible towards Morrinsville or South side but North Ok if it's not too far.

I'm looking for something pretty close and if it has some sort of little play area where riders can go up and down a bank or over a few bumps/piles of dirt /whatever simliar that would be good.

An easy track would also be considered. Thompsons is out of the question yet.

Past the learners stage Eddie? Who's is this for then?

Around this area a great deal of the roads are tar sealed but nice and small, one laners etc...The road to the Thompsons track and the road out of the area id nice, it contains a metal road and a great ford, you can wash the bike and go through it as many times as you want and at any speed if you feel the urge.

There is a small road, track out the back of Tauwhare, it is tight, good skills for riding but again it is a public road but fun...

Thompsons track is now nicely graded as the guys have done some logging up there. About two thirds of the way up there is a turn off, hit this and go through the forestry piece, it leads to a metal road and then a gate. It is a dead end but good for a detour. At the moment the track is wet but well rideable. NOT, like the old days, up to the axles in clay and mud, this has been graded a bit now.

Off hand, I cannot recall any tracks but give me some time to think about it...

Maybe Thompsons could be worth a look then. I was last up it about 8 months ago and it was farily ripped up.

Got any more details about Tauwahre, a google link or anything?

I also vaguely remember but have never ridden...apparently there is a road out the east side of cambridge that goes up a hill to a tower or something and had not bad views.

This is what it's for, and it's not mine though I have access to it and will no doubt be giving it a test ride in the next 2 weeks.

Is also a good route to have a flick around...
As I said, most of the roads are sealed here. There is also the Wires track north of Thames but it is a bit advanced and in some parts a real Enduro.
I head south for the roads actually, Taumarunui way, of course this is of no help but it has got me thinking mate.....Give me five...

Yes, out the back of Cambridge there is the road that goes over the back to Waterworks road, a nice metal then tar sealed road.
If you will be up, I can show you some of them, I still have the Husaberg mate.
The road is the Ohinewai road, just out the back of Patetonga, nice road, corners tight, goes for a little bit then opens out.
Thompsons is well worth exploring at present, it will be wet but navigable for a small bike, wouldn't take the big'uns up there...

    Cheers ears

Thames is probably a bit far away as it will likely be the riders first time out on this bike, though they have been a road rider for probably more than 10 years it's been a while.

out that way, you can link it to Hobbiton, and explore all the roads around there but they will be sealed but tight and small, nice scenery...
Out the back of Karapiro is also good, but then you might be getting a little too far away.
There is also the Aotearoa Rd, near Karapiro, nice metal road, also Taupaki road, unmarked rd and that will lead to a small paper road I found by accident with the GPS.
Oh, the best road would have to be out the back of Ngaroma, goes through to south of Benneydale, head back to cafe then back home through Arohena and Rotongata....
I have never really named the roads as these are the local 'get there and head on south' roads I use..

Why not? Had the 800 up there through bogs up over the cylinders no worries, it loves it. The fat things just sink to the bottom then hook up and tractor through.

Have a look here at my last expidition up there

The thing is, when I go up there it is empty, really empty...
Mid week it is great, weekends it is full of 4x4 so no worries about getting out....
I usually take the Husaberg there, wash it off on the way home through the ford...
I would love to take the KTM up there but not on my own, it is a bit of a walk for help, and I wouldn't Guarentee that either...Still, it can be pushed downhill rather than up.
Actually, the more you go up there, the more you get to know the places and bogs/holes to avoid...
