I guess that my old girl is a bit of a cross between a sport bike and a tourer.
It was the quickest on the block when it was first released, but could also comfortably travel from one end of the country to the other leaving the rider feeling good at the end of the ride.
It is not a sports bike by todays standard, but was when It was new.
So where dose that put it in this discusion?
A sports bike has been refined over the years to be a purpous built machine, the intention to go as quick as possible with the minimum of fuss, with the best brakes and the best acceleration.
It should take its rider to the destination, or end of a race as fast as practicable.
A Harley on the other hand, has been refined to be the most comfortable of bikes, purpous built to takes its rider at a sedate speed with a good comfort level, able to carry enough baggage without compromising its performance, and leave the rider refreshed at the end of the journey able to spend a night in the pub talking shit.
The two bikes are so different from design and purpous that it is foolhardy to try and compare the two of them.
Also the riders of each mode are as different as the bikes.
They usually have very little in common, come from differing social backgrounds and if it was not for the fact they both ride bikes to ralleys, probably would never meet anywhere else in life.
But excemptions are always with us
To be old and wise, first you must be young and stupid.
Good post !
You will always get the exception that comes from one of them back grounds, who also enjoys the thrill a sports bike can bring !
Lucky for me the british have caught up lol
Now that i have the bikes that can give the thrills of a sports bike, i am looking to obtain a harley as well so i can enjoy the chug chug (or is that poe-ta-toe poe-ta-toe) from social background to social background without the tyre (and licence) shredding acceleration that has you twisting the throttle at every opportunity !
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"
Bowls can wait !
only ridden one harley.......loved it, was a glide of some sort.
there is a stereotype attached to harleys that I don't like, so when I get one I will remove the branding.
I understand people taking the piss out of tassel clad harley riders but I don't do it myself, there are good and bad people riding all sorts of bikes.
they are nice to ride. as far as fast goes I see people on touring bikes keep up with sports bikes. I think if you are a good rider you could get a harley to move along at a fair clip on corners, though you may need to raise it a bit.
bikes are not just about fast to me, thats why I own 2.
people who slag harleys should stop, its just the same as harleys owners slagging jap bikes.
Each to their own.
Harleys might not be my cup of tea,but i don't "hate" them.
In fact, their are some models that they do that i quite like.
I have a heap of mates with them, and go on rides with them from time to time.
Fact is,i'm a speed freak,so i own a sportsbike.
Pretty simple really.
But IMO,anything with 2 wheels is cool.
And if everyone had the same taste,it would be a boring world!
One thing i don't like,is people trying to force their brand choice on others.
One mans medicine, can be anothers poison.
