    Heading your way

    Hi Guys and Gals,
We're two Irish Riders heading to New Zealand for 3 weeks mid January to early February. We're renting a BMW R1200RT and a R1200GS in Christchurch doing a lap of both Islands and dropping them off in Auckland before flying back to The Emerald Isle. We hope to use two Kenwood walkie talkies and Autocom units to keep in touch on route. Just wondering if there's any laws on using these radios that we should know about? We've used them all over Europe and used them in Canada last year without problems.
By the way, great site. I've been tuning in weekly now for several months. I'm surprised how busy it is for a country with a small population. I'm sure we'll meet several members when we're on the road. Really looking forward to this trip.

    Regards,
    Kieran.

Only a problem if someone complains! It's because we have awesome motorcycling! I live up north so drop me a PM when you head up this way.

    Hi Kieran.

You will be fine with those radios. Even if they are not NZ spec ones it is unlikely you will cause a problem with them, or that anyone will realise and even care. If you get an interference just choose another channel.

With our terrain, I think you will be surprised just how small the range from them is. If you position the antennas as high as possible and keep them clear of other metallic objects you may get better signal.

Welcome to NZ, and please do be careful on our roads - they regularly catch out tired tourists with all sorts of nasty tricks. Motorcycling mecca for sure, but also many traps even for the experienced.

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for the advice. We're two fairly steady riders in our early 50s. We do like to make a little progress now and then but without comprimising safety. Riding in Ireland is a good foundation. Badly surfaced roads, loadza agricultural hazards and careless drivers is a normal day at the office here. Looking forward to the scenery that we've heard so much about and the food and maybe some wine/beer. Really looking forward to meeting the people. Studying Kiwi phrasebook as bed time reading at the moment.

    Regards,
    Kieran.

    Hi
Sounds like your in for a good trip over here.
I just want to recommend a good book for you to look for before you get here. - New Zealand Motorcycle Atlas - by Peter Mitchell. Well worth a read to get you in the mood. It has 100 top rides in it/maps etc.
Ride it until the wheels fall off...

Hello Kieran, You'll love the riding out here. The roads don't get a lot of use and are generally in pretty good condition.

Much beauty to be savoured and the hospitality is similar to that you already know in the southern parts of your own fair land.

Look forward to it because you won't be dissapointed.

What is the power rating of the radios, and the frequencies they operate on? The spectrum regulations can be found at:
    http://www.med.govt.nz/

I probably wouldn't worry about the legal requirements to be honest. As long as you haven't modified them with power amps and the like I'm sure they'll be fine.
