there is a guy in welly who used to do it.I dont know if he still does.there was a discussion on the kiwi air heads site about it.

I have asked many people about twin plugging and all of them have told me that they would not go through the effort again. With a properly ported head and shaped squishband you can accomplish the same performance and fuel usage results.

Don't think I've posted pics of my little piggy here yet. Bought her off trade me in a sad state.


Stripped her down and had her sandblasted and powdercoated. Also ordered a big box of goodies from Motorworks in the UK.






Did a brake upgrade to a R1100 caliper (ebay about $65 incl shipping, cheaper than the service kit for the old one, pads not to bad either)

This twin spark thing has me intrigued. Do you just find a nice spot to drill & tap & go for it or are the heads already manufactured ready for another sparkplug.

What's a sqishband?

Squishband basically refers to the shaping of the head in the combustion chamber. the idea to get the gas (air/fuel) spread to give fairly equal combustion (easier on a thumper as plug is usually in the middle). bit more complicated with the off center airhead.
this is why some people do a twin plug setup.


As for the modification of the heads, the guys that know what they are doing will drill and tap it for you, usually with a smaller sized plug. If the person doing the mod does not know what he is doing, then it may result in a cracked head. The biggest problem is not actually setting up the twin plug system, but to get the timing right. Expensive timing units with various advance curves are required to really get benefit. these guys make unit that can be used http://www.omegaignitions.com/

Have a look at a picture of a motor. The standard spark plug is top centre and the cooling fins and head are shaped to provide the gap for where the spark plug hole is located.

The lower half of the head is a mirror image of the upper half except for the existence of the actual plug hole, so the natural and obvious place to drill a 2nd hole is already there. You 'just' have to drill and tap the new hole. Whether thats by accident or design I have no idea.

As Newguy mentions however thats the easy bit. You then need to get the timing set up with additional sensors, buy and find how and where to mount a 2nd coil etc.

part of the Rangipo Power scheme,this water is collected far south of here,goes through rangipo power station,out to Poutu Canal then into lake Taupo via Tokaanu Power Station,and then through all the Waikato stations

Yep, I went through the power station either just before or just after it opened. I also had a look at the Poutu canal today, with the video camera going.

It was a transit day mostly actually, Hamilton back to Welly but i did some exploring on the way. The tussock is nothern desert road. It would be well worth checking out who owns it/what access is required as it looks like there's huge potential there. I only went a few hundred metres off the road.
