firstly you wont know if it works until you look, tis the point of it you see! But i think it quite a good comparison, cos you can estimate what the value of your bike is, but its never proved until you sell it.

    "What value!! "
    My arse.

if you're going to start this, this thread is just gonna turn into war of the words. and it dosnt take a genius to realise most crap on trademe is overpriced.
because its not what the bike is worth. its what the seller thinks the bike is worth, and some.

i remember when they were being sold for $6800....
now RRP 8,495.00. gotta love it aye?

Buying in the 250cc range needed for beginners is a tight market and the new ninja holds it value. Keep looking you will learn so much.

Have fun finding a fun bike and enjoying riding....silly to say that because you just will!
Thanks Genie, I'm sure I will.

I'm not really complaining, more laughing at some people's expectations. I just think the bike is overpriced. And the gear is a red herring (unless you're exactly the same size and shape as the owner, and don't have gear already, and like the jacket, and are happy with a second hand pink helmet.

It's not the only overpriced bike on Trade Me, there are heaps of 250's in the same boat. I'll be buying one of the more sensibly priced ones though.

A quick question though: You bought a new Ninja for $7,995. Do you wish you'd held of so you could buy the one I linked from Trade Me plus the gear for $7,500 instead? Or do you think your new package was a better deal at $10,000?

Oh, sorry, you were taking that bit literally.

Damn! I wish there was a sarcasm emoticon... maybe will do.

True. But I have bought things and sold things before and have worked in the marketing industry for about 25 years so I do know a little bit about expectation vs actual market value.

P.S. I think if there were any mods on that Ninja the ad would say so.

lets face it, the 250 market is a strange one. O could show at least ten, and maybe 20 or 30 bikes on TM, that are 400-600cc for under 6k. (second hand of course) whereas plenty of 250's are asking thousands more. I have three or four 600's on my watchlist right now at around 3-4000.

Its supply and demand. the little ninja's are a desirable bike, thus they will command a higher price. my old man used to have a saying he would use, when he was purchasing a collectible item.. he wouls say "its only worth what someone's prepared to pay you". the same bike may be worth more to me than you, or vice versa.

I have a 2008 250R that I'll be looking to sell shortly. I'll let you know how it goes. To me, any bike that you can buy, ride for 6-12 months, and sell for close to what you paid for it, is not overpriced. We'll see how close I get to my buying price as soon as I get around to selling it. Until then, I've strapped the L plate on it and got my missus learning to ride

Shh - stop talking sense. There's no place for that on KB

It's not bike owners who are alone in overpricing things on TM - the number of cars which are priced waaaaay over the price people will pay for them (which must be the definition of "Value" is shocking.

Plus, as already mentioned, 250s are a captive market. Until recently, no-one (AFAIK) was even making a "sporty" 250, so if you wanted one, you had to buy a 20 year old, clapped our ZXR, TZR etc.

I didn't know how over priced 250s were until I started looking for a NC 30. The bike market is very different than the car market.

Hard to say, if it was local and the gear fitted yeah most likely but being out of town and not able to try on etc - no. Would have had $3000 to go play with ..... holiday woudl have been nice. The convience of being able to try all the gear on etc really wasn't worth that 3k, oh I could have gone shopping for dresses. But hey I got a brand spanking shine new bike, leathers that are all mine and i'm happy with that (though I'd love some new dresses)
