Thread: TZR or FXR?

    TZR or FXR?

    I am wanting to get a bucket, and was reasonably settled on getting an FXR, against my better judgement, but a potentially better option has arisen.
    That is to buy a TZR250 1987 1KT, (going cheap) and use it for a rolling chassis. This makes a lot of sense because I ride a yamaha R1-Z which uses many parts from the TZR 1KT, and buying one would give me a complete spare engine as well as a lot of other things.

    However I have worries about finding and fitting a bucket legal engine. Is it a complicated process? Would anybody be keen to help me out? I can pay in carbon/fiberglass goodies.

    But in general; would it be better just to get an FXR which is closer to being raceable or to spend a bit of time mucking around with a TZR?

    I am just about to start building up an RGV with an FXR motor. I suppose it depends on finding an engine. If you had all the bits I would think it would not take long. I don't know how complicated fitting another engine into a frame but I guess I will find out soon.

    Carbon/Fiberglass goodies sounds good I am sure some will put there hand up. I will be learning as I go on my project I have a deadline of xmas so no hurry.

    Weight wise , what is the difference between a stock FXR 150 vs a TZR/NSR/ RGV with FXR 150 /Lochin donk in it?

    Not sure about the weight difference but you'd have a stiffer frame with suspension that wasn't built to no budget.

    Not sure. But the TZR that Brendon just sold came in at 89kg i think.

    Thats quite a saving. My FXR with all the angle grinder mods I could find and no electric start came in at 105.

    Yeh mine is 103 with a splash of gas. Andrew A's is 104 with about the same gas.

    the rgv is actually pretty heavy, got an early one here. What about find an early nsr, like 88/89, next best thing to a rs125 chassis in my opinion. swap rear wheel for a 17" and bish bosh bash done!

    Yeh mine is a VJ 22 even heavier than the older one's hoping to off set that with the RS wheels I have.

    go the 1kt, light bike, good wheels and handling. depending on how much you weigh you would fit harder springs in the front because the 23 year old springs in the front will be as soft as a runny turd, they were very soft as new. this was the only issue i had with my bike. oh and pretty much ANY bucket legal engine will fit in the frame. i've built two based on teh 1kt frame, here is one of them: http://www.fxr150.co.nz/discussion/v...c.php?f=6&t=57

    Just need someone who is handy enough to mount an engine for me now.

    Go the 1kt. I've got one with a Loncin. I wouldn't worry about the springs, when it was a tzr it weighed 150kg or so, mine around 95kg. Nice thing about the 1kt is 17" wheels at each end.

    forgot to say, I'm 100kg and 6'4"
