    I find the maori version much easier to sing - maybe it's the softer consonants (or whatever the tech term is). It raises my score from god-awful to fairly shit-house.

    Of course after a couple of jugs I sound like pavaroti. Of course Pavaroti is my dog.....

    There's even more than one verse, who'd a thunk that?

    God Defend New Zealand / Aotearoa
    Māori Version
    E Ihowā Atua,
    O ngā iwi mātou rā
    Āta whakarangona;
    Me aroha noa
    Kia hua ko te pai;
    Kia tau tō atawhai;
    Manaakitia mai
    Aotearoa

    Ōna mano tāngata
    Kiri whero, kiri mā,
    Iwi Māori, Pākehā,
    Rūpeke katoa,
    Nei ka tono ko ngā hē
    Māu e whakaahu kē,
    Kia ora mārire
    Aotearoa

    Tōna mana kia tū!
    Tōna kaha kia ū;
    Tōna rongo hei pakū
    Ki te ao katoa
    Aua rawa ngā whawhai
    Ngā tutū e tata mai;
    Kia tupu nui ai
    Aotearoa

    Waiho tona takiwā
    Ko te ao mārama;
    Kia whiti tōna rā
    Taiāwhio noa.
    Ko te hae me te ngangau
    Meinga kia kore kau;
    Waiho i te rongo mau
    Aotearoa

    Tōna pai me toitū
    Tika rawa, pono pū;
    Tōna noho, tāna tū;
    Iwi nō Ihowā.
    Kaua mōna whakamā;
    Kia hau te ingoa;
    Kia tū hei tauira;
    Aotearoa

    English Version
    God of Nations at Thy feet,
    In the bonds of love we meet,
    Hear our voices, we entreat,
    God defend our free land.
    Guard Pacific's triple star
    From the shafts of strife and war,
    Make her praises heard afar,
    God defend New Zealand.

    Men of every creed and race,
    Gather here before Thy face,
    Asking Thee to bless this place,
    God defend our free land.
    From dissension, envy, hate,
    And corruption guard our state,
    Make our country good and great,
    God defend New Zealand.

    Peace, not war, shall be our boast,
    But, should foes assail our coast,
    Make us then a mighty host,
    God defend our free land.
    Lord of battles in Thy might,
    Put our enemies to flight,
    Let our cause be just and right,
    God defend New Zealand.

    Let our love for Thee increase,
    May Thy blessings never cease,
    Give us plenty, give us peace,
    God defend our free land.
    From dishonour and from shame,
    Guard our country's spotless name,
    Crown her with immortal fame,
    God defend New Zealand.

    So far I've the first line off pat.......

    You missed the last of the five verses in English:

    May our mountains ever be
    Freedom's ramparts on the sea,
    Make us faithful unto Thee,
    God defend our free land.
    Guide her in the nations' van,
    Preaching love and truth to man,
    Working out Thy glorious plan,
    God defend New Zealand.

    Well how about that? I sure just learnt something alright. Good stuff, I had no idea about those extra verses. It seems that I have got some learning to do.

    Haha first line down pat... it seems I might be in a similar boat.

    Too right!! I remember hearing one of our past ministers explaining "the nations van" having nothing to do with 4 wheeled transport.

    Maori version - yep know the first verse really well, having helped teach it or played it for countless bright eyed and bushy tailed students. Doubt there would be too many teachers around who don't know at least the first verse by heart in Maori.

    Surprised they're not pissing more time and money and forcing kids to learn it in sign language too.

    And there's the rub. The most effective propaganda strategy is to indoctrinate the children, because they are the population of the future. If they are successfully 'brainwashed' then time and progressing age will work in the propagandist's favour. Witness Hitler youth as a demonstration of the strategy

    The national anthem is as inspiring as steam off of a turd. It needs Razzmatazzzzzz! Something that uplifts, rather than the monotone crap that is mumbled out at the start of a thugby game.
    Have a look at the American or Australian anthems, OR (GASP) the french...

    I couldn't agree more. A poem written by an Irish-born, Australian free-mason - with the music being chosen by a panel of Melbournians. I say just wait until the birth of our glorious republic, lead by President William Apiata, and then we'll choose a new ditty to do our flag-waving by.

    Anyway, whats wrong with God Save the Queen ? Bet there isn't a maori version of that.

    I much prefer the lyrics of the Maori version.

    O Lord, God,
    of nations and of us too
    Listen to us,
    Cherish us
    Let goodness flourish,
    May your blessings flow.
    Defend
    Aotearoa

    Let all people,
    Red skin, white skin
    Maori, Pakeha,
    Gather before you
    May all our wrongs, we pray,
    Be forgiven
    So that we might say long live,
    Aotearoa

    May it be forever prestigious,
    May it go from strength to strength
    May its fame spread
    Far and wide,
    Let not strife
    Nor dissension ensue,
    May it ever be great
    Aotearoa

    Let its territory,
    Be ever enlightened
    Throughout the land,
    Let envy and dissension
    Be dispelled,
    Let peace reign
    Over
    Aotearoa.

    Let its good features endure,
    Let righteousness and honesty
    Prevail,
    Among the people of God
    Let it never be ashamed,
    But rather let its name be known
    Thereby becoming the model to emulate
    Aotearoa.

    Except for the god bit, i am not in any way religious.

    I would have thought it was more embarrassing to have a whole article about an anonymous man.

    I have been lead to believe that our anthem is the only religious one. How can it appeal to the many who have not seen
    any proof that any of the gods exist.

    With some amusement, I have to admit that I only know the anthem in Maori.
