Yep, I always either take a picture of their drivers license or hold onto it, and take a picture of their car carefully including their license plate.

And even then, I only allow test pilots based on a character judgement. Either I judge you trustworthy enough to ride it, or you're shit outta luck.

Best of luck getting the bike back mate, pity you didn't get the cars plate!

Bastards ...sorry to here you lost so much in such a short time hope you do get a positive result though.....alot of that happening at the moment and hell winters not even that cold for them to be wanting to go back to the slammer......

If he called your mobile(if you Have one) at least there is a lead within the number he called from,But if you haven't already contacted Trademe I am sure that they Can supply if not you but the police that traders information

everything use too be on face value, now we are at no licence no cash no ID no ride now,if anyone was too turn up to buy one of my bikes without any gear and without the full price there would be no ride

hope you get your bike back mate, i'd hate my pride and joy being taken like that.

not much else to mention except i hope the drop kick that stole your bike was close-lined by an object and your bike came to a stop in a field of fuffy pillows...

Interesting to read all of your comments. Thanks to those of you with constructive comments. Of course in hindsight I should of would of could of done alot of things differently, and it's knawing at my brain!! It's the first time I've sold a bike before and I guess I never really stopped to think about how different it is to someone test driving a car. It sucks to think that you can't trust anyone, looks can be extremely deceiving, but I guess i had to learn someday.

The police have a few leads that they are following up through TradeMe and Vodafone. Also, someone spotted the bike driving around St Heliers on Sunday with no plates on, so please do keep an eye out.

    pocketcracker: Sorry about that!

The world will miss that fuck (not).

Okay, I swap keys - meaning when they ride up, I grab theirs, and they ride mine. Or I grab a small deposit, aka the sale price of the bike.
It’s diametrically opposed to the sanitised existence of the Lemmings around me in the Dilbert Cartoon hell I live in; it’s life at full volume, perfect colour with high resolution and 10,000 watts of amplification.

Don't run with that idea man, the only thing you might then have in your posession is the bike he just stole 30 minutes ago from the last guy

Swapping the keys won't ensure your safety though. About 20yrs ago in ChCh some guy stole a flash pushbike, took it to a cheap car dealer, left it as security and test drove a car. He then took that car to another dealer, offered it as a trade on another more expensive car and took that for a test drive. He repeated this proccess throughout the day and ended up in a flash Euro. I don't think he was ever traced.
