Subject: Search underway near Upper Hutt for overdue motorcyclist [NZ Police News]

    Hi,

A new news release is available for you to view on the Police website:

Title: Search underway near Upper Hutt for overdue motorcyclist

An extensive Police search is underway in the Akatarawa Forest Park area for a missing Lower Hutt man, who failed to return home from a motorbike ride yesterday afternoon.

Wellington Police District Operations Manager Inspector Mike Wright says Police were alerted about 7-30pm last night, after the 35 year-old failed to return home at the expected time.

“Police Search and Rescue staff have been out searching overnight and we have now ramped up the search. We’re being assisted by Greater Wellington Regional Council parks staff and Upper Hutt Community Rescue members.”

“We’re focusing on a large area in and around the Akatarawa Forest Park area. A helicopter has done an overhead search earlier this morning, however we haven’t been able to locate this man.”

Inspector Wright says there were a number of keen trampers, trailbike riders and four wheel drive enthusiasts in the area yesterday, given the fine weather and someone may have seen this man on their journey.

“He’s described as a Caucasian of average height and solid build, dressed in black clothing, riding a green Kawasaki KLX 400R motorbike, similar to the one below. We’re urging anyone who may have seen him to contact Police immediately on either (04) 381 2000 or on the free phone Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.”

    ENDS

For media queries please contact Wellington Police District Communications Manager Victoria Evans on 0274 373 020.

Its a KLX 400R isnt that a road/off road bike so my guess is that he might not of had a car/van/ute...
Yes but most of us with lights have road kits that are never fitted. 90% are transported to our rides excect for the dual sport guys.
The stuff article didn't say he left on it, It said "left to ride" but I might be splitting hairs there. You could be right though, still worth finding out I reckon.
On a Motorcycle you're penetrating distance, right along with the machine!! In a car you're just a spectator, the windshields like a TV!!

Road bike kit fully fitted as he rode to whatever the start point was.

    Cheers

I hope we hear we've got a very sheepish rider who got lost soon
When I used to ride off road on my own, I'd leave notes to say which direction I'd gone in, and even which trails I was heading up. The trails thing didn't work as I'd easily get side-tracked, but at least the guys knew which direction to start looking for me if anything had happened. They used to think it was me being paranoid, but it was this sort of situation I never wanted to be in, and that was in a smaller area than what we're talking here.
Thank you to those heading out to help look, and those already looking. Big hugs to the family and friends sitting anxiously by the phone.

I live up the Akatarawas myself, and passed a number of "off road" bikes on my way home froma ride last night. Wish I had payed more attention now, as I don't recall any of the details about them except each rider was on their own.

All the best with a positive outcome from the search. And anyone heading out themselves on their bikes to assist, just take it easy yourselves.
