At least with CNC you will have consistency for every piston. That means valving specs can be consistent between shocks and I think its perfectly reasonable to expect a minimum quality that will attain total consistency.
Surely you are not using vice grips on suspension parts?????!!!!

I am sure they wrap them in cloth first

If you look closely at high quality aftermarket pistons ( Ohlins, Race Tech, WP and Penske ) its more than about just the port size. Theres quite a lot of detail in the lead in passages, surface finishes to minimise shim hydrostatic suction, a correct amount of piston ring drag but also having expansion on that ring to compensate for the crazy expansion that occurs with the alloy bodies.
And dont get me started on nitogen bladders and how oil areation occurs all too quickly turning the oil into a semi compressible milkshake. Its for very good reason that the very best shock manufacturers exclusively use dividing gas pistons in a micro-finished bore.
No one has mentioned here that often the rebound needle tapers in oem shocks need reprofiling, we did one today to achieve an appropriate response range. Most of these shocks are full of unpleasant little fish hooks.
Self instal marketed kits are fine but thetre are a lot of real world detail issues not mentioned in the fine print.
In high quality aftermarket all of those issues are already taken care of.

Now I know you're joking. Kerry Dukie told me it's a perfectly acceptable way of modifying the size of them and how they do it in the Ohlins factory in fact. Surely he'd know what he's talking about with all those years experience flying F-14s? Surely...........

Unless Im mistaken Craig Shirriffs has won a couple of NZ road race championships and is consistently at the very very top in street racing. And he has peddled that underpowered CBR1000RR around very very effectively. 3rd in the championship is no mean feat on an underpwered and underfunded machine.

He sure has. And you two really need to get a room.
