hey guys thinking of getting a harley....
I live on a 16 k gravel road... have heard that the fact they belt driven and gravel can cause the belt to break that i shouldnt get one

any harley riders find that this is a prob on gravel roads??

bike shop owners tell ya anything cos they want you to buy their bike instead.. so wanted to check with some riders

Yes, it will be a problem, Its only a matter of time until it picks up rock and ruins your belt, And its a major when this happens.

Convert it to chain drive, either before you destroy a belt,or when the first one fails.

Trust me, Pushing a Harley is no fun at all, especially on gravel. Leaving your bike and having someone steal it would be even less fun.

Don't let it put you off, Everyone should own at least a couple Harleys in their lifetime.

The cost I believe is equal to the cost of getting the belt replaced, pretty sure someone I know paid $800 to get it done, and that was through a dealership.

As far as Bike shops, Just talk to Pete.

If you get a Sportster replacing the belt is not hard or long-winded at all.

Now if you by a big-block Harley on the other hand...ya don't want to know.

Nah - that was Keith Wandell, but don't get me started!

There are still a few XB12X's around and it's a perfect Harley for 16km of dirt road. Even very easy to clean

A few years ago whilst gliding thru Tuatapere on the Honda's on New Years Day we saw a Guy pushing his Harley in the baking sun, while his GF followed behind carrying a destroyed drive belt..................poor bastard, no shops open, no bike shops for 100's of miles, and even then, who has one on the shelf.....
