Your tastes could be somewhat expensive though Phil - Would love to see what it would have turned out like tho - a dakar ready bike??

Still waiting for the story here BMRSNUT...

Reading thru a thread on Olds cool where a guy has taken a million pics of doing up his new to him GS. A lot of repetition & he's learning as he goes however the detail is interesting as it's what I can expect to find with mine.

    Trademe R100GS

800kms driving yesterday, so last night was a quick post then off to bed.

Yes, the bike was the one on tardeme.

It was originally a BMW demo bike, then ran a huge number of Kms with a rental co (which I am cool with given that it is likely to have been overserviced), then about 40k kms with 3 private owners. Two of those were father & son, the other is Rob who I've bought the bike from. Rob has a mechanical background, made up the stainless balance box, & also the replacement screen it has on it.

As I've said, the Kms don't both me - I'd rather have a carefully serviced bike, than one that is lower Kms but has had six owners who did squat (or sent it to a dealer that didn't know BM's)

On first blush it's reasonable tidy for the Kms. The engine is actually quieter than a no of low milege BM's I've had previously.

No apparent fruit (heated grips, flash shock etc). All fairly standard. No immediate issues except perhaps the battery is getting old, & the key needs replacement. Its got an original BM shock. The spring is (ferrari) yellow, like Padmei's. As I said, basically a tidier twin. I wonder if they are from the same fleet?

I'd also thought about Sean Kelly's Akld bike, but that was a little rougher

I'll have a better look over it during the weekend. I'm likely taking it on the MMMMM.

The KTM 640 adventure will likely go on the mkt, as will the R100RS I have had for 20 yrs. I'll look to cycle from proceeds into a few tasteful mods to the GS, & maybe a samll trail bike.
IT'S JUST BETTER WHEN THERE'S TWINS INVOLVED..

Its not hard to spend new bike prices when you start building trick bikes. I tallied up $15k quite easily. And its still a 200kg dirt bike !!
I will still continue development on mine. I want the suspension better and get back to 1000cc.
I'm sitting on the fence at the moment with my DR as to whether to sell or keep it. Today is a keep it day. Got a warrant & rego for it and a fang around for a while

Are you going to transfer the fruit off the RS before it goes?

I got the Schmidt fired up today with a new battery & went for a quick spin.

It didn't go very good - wouldn't rev initially past 3K when moving - just get more sluggish however after stopping & messing around with plug leads I could coax it along at 4500RPM @ about 70kmh in 3rd. Something not right there but I'll get to the bottom of it.

Drained oil & took out filter - totally different one to the one I've bought. The original is a complete cylinder with integral black seals, the new one is a folding type with only one integral seal & no O ring for the other end. I'll research which one I'm supposed to have.

Degreased & washed the bottom of the engine.

Question. As far as throttle cables, plug leads & other bits & pieces go, where do yo guys purchase them from? Is it better to get a box from Overseas or are the prices from local shops not too bad.

WHich BMW dealer closest to Nelson is worth using.

    Cheers

    I think you have a G/S (81-87) filter, not a GS (88-94) filter.

BMW NZ will bend you over and rape you up the ar*e for a clutch cable, other parts aren't too bad.

FFS Padmei, stay away from the local dealers, I know that we (me and MrsJ) got diddled when buying genuine BMW parts here.
Much cheaper from wemoto I think it was, even with the postage it still worked out cheaper and a damn sight quickerer too
