Im not sure i can make it tonight - haven't been to nass for a couple of weeks mainly because its been wet and riding by myself in the wet was a bit daunting. Anyway battery is now flat and i don't know how to get going....

Um i don't know if i have any jumper leads - can look in car or buy some but wouldn't know what to do with them at bike end

Might be a good bet to invest in a bike battery charger, otherwise if you leave it connected via the leads to your car battery for a few moments it should draw enough current to allow you to start your bike. Otherwise bump start it on the nearest hill

we learnt bump starting a wee while ago wouldve been great for you. Go to nearest hill put it into .....probably 2nd gear, get a good push let clutch out and a little throttle. should be all good. (similar concept to roll starting a car) Alternatively if you belong to AA they will come jump you :-)

Basically put it in parallel with your car battery.
Connect eth +'es together and the -'ves together. Yes there is other stuff you can do (like grounding etc), but thats the most simple technique to remember.

As it looks like it will be a nice evening, is anyone else keen on doing a longer ride, possibly leaving before 7??

Turn the key on. Turn off anything that drains the battery that you can (like lights). Put the bike in second. A bit of choke. Hold the clutch in. Ask someone to give you a push, and when your moving let the clutch out. As soon as the bike has started pull the clutch in so that it doesn't take off. Give it some revs to warm the engine up and charge the battery. Close the choke after 60s.

I enjoyed last light. I haven't done any emergency braking practice for a while, and I was surprised how my skills had become rusty.
As they say, use it or loose it.

I really enjoyed last night too. This was only the third time I have been on my bike and I am still learning gears, clutch, throttle, steering etc etc...... I really needed to be made to practice stopping and starting and found everyones help and advice fantastic. I am a bit nervous practicing in front of everyone as I am so bad but everyone is really supportive. I just wanted to say a big thanks to NASS.

Yeah was interesting to notice the difference you get with twin front discs! (hence the front wheel lock up!) More practise is in order!
Gotta love the ability to drop old bikes with no additional damage

I doubt the difference between one or two front discs would make much difference at 30km/h ...

ooooohhhh yes when I was riding the bunch of CXs two had single disc on the front and drum on the back. The other one (a Euro) has twin disc and sligle disc on the back. Forget which bike you are on and grab a hand-full of brakes it gets interesting. You get a wake up when the handle bars dive into the roadand you have to feather the front but the back just locks up. The first time the back lock up I wondered what the funny niose was......
oh hang on the tacko is on zero ah ha
this is a clue. Remember to squeeze the brakes gentle to start to load the front when weight transferance happens. Just grabing will only lock up the front.....
