When I raced MTBs, I would always pull over if there was someone blatantly faster than me coming up behind (lots harder to tell on a mountain bike though), but if there was someone at or around my pace then it was up to them to get past. Sometimes people actually want you to put some effort into staying ahead, makes them ride faster. One MTB race I had a guy on my back wheel for a good 40 minutes, I rode the race of my life trying to keep him behind me. We crossed the finish together and after I rediscovered the ability to breath and talk, I went up to him to apologise for not letting him past. He told me to piss off, he'd nearly coughed up a lung a number of times trying to stick with me and shook my hand for making it an awesome race.

I'm the same as the later comments by the faster guys! I tend to be in the slower bunch so let guys past quite often. I wouldn't have dared try to hold any of the fast guys up on the T100 their speed was dangerously faster than most riders there. All you heard was their boooming exhaust, you ducked out the way for a split sec, not even stopping, then they flashed by and where gone!
I'm getting a little faster now and would hope the slower riders would show me the same good grace. You only had to look at that guy in the yellow jacket in JT119's vid at how much he was slowing JT down, struggling along with both feet waving out at some points and even when he fell off he didn't give in. He knew what he was doing, the ass! When JT got past he was heaps faster. Slower riders must remember they unsight the track, upset the flow and create quite a bit of danger for the passing rider and themselves. You do much better for your lap times by trying to follow for 1/2 a k than over riding and slowing both of you down!!
I've only done 2 or 3 races but you bloody know by his exhaust sound, how quickly a guy catches you and therefore no how much faster he is, if you hear him and then he's up your arse let him through, if it takes him 3k to catch you, race him, its not bloody rocket science!
    Just my 2c!!
On a Motorcycle you're penetrating distance, right along with the machine!! In a car you're just a spectator, the windshields like a TV!!

'Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out! Shouting, ' Holy sh!t... What a Ride!! '

i think you lot are missing my point a bit I don't try to hold anyone up and when any of the seriously fast guys come up its fairly obvious and I make way but that said there skill level is such that they don't have much trouble makeing the pass .
if some one slowly catches me in the tight stuff i'll often ride as normal kepping to one side a bit in the straighter bits to give them and opertunity but half the time its the guy I just spent ten minutes catching and passing why would I want to stop and let him past easily? Just cos he's had a burst of energy

This seems to work fine for me I haven't had anyone block passing me or running me off the track or even stuck behind me for any lengh of time.

Going around block passing all the novices would not only be stupid and childish its also dangerous for the riders involved its also damageing for our sport, who would want to start rideing and raceing with people who behaved like that.

Chill out we are for the most part a bunch of amateurs out haveing some fun was anyone here getting paid or just your egos on the line .

    poke poke.....

Well said! The diehards should be embracing novices such as the like of me and not trying to put the weekend riders off. After all I'm happy to make up the numbers for the cause but at the same time I'd like to be treated with a little bit of humility. It's daunting enough attending a race event not to have a crazy eyed tosser living a fantasy and getting carried away with the occasion. Would the self fancied experts prefer the number fillers don't attend these events?

I'm with Oldskool,i've thought of trying some of these races but being pretty an average rider at best........so hearing stories of shunting, elbows etc puts me off a bit.....and to quote Barty "bikes make good traction".....if someone deliberatly ran over my $8000 bike cause i held them up for five minutes things would get nasty, especially if it got broken...........

That only generally happens when you drop it right in front and there is now where else to go normally half way up a hill climb and they get left on their sides just use the tyres for a bit of extra bite.
