Tyre choice for adventure riding? (Mixing road and off-road)

I used it to attempt to repair a small leak in a tube - stayed inflated for about 10 minutes . Then tried patching the tube but the patch only stayed on for a few hours before the slime got underneath it and lifted it off. New tube was required.

Slime might be ok for a tubeless tyre.

I can confirm, the Metzler Karoo 2's don't last very long if you use them on the tarmac.

This is before the NBA ride left, and after (about 1500km, about 60% tarmac).

Yea. I think my tyre was like that at the start of our little greasy jaunt last week, yet with the bikeuncorked it was grunting along off idle finding grip everywhere, even at 25psi!! Very nice.

Personally I don't find worn knobbies a problem on the seal in the wet, as long as they aren't worn square/flat with a sharp shoulder.


Slime... in my experience not worth the hassle. It only works on pin holes; lots of my punctures have been slits from either pinch flats or lately glass, or nails tearing the tube. It makes repair nearly impossible.

That looks pretty good for 1500km. I wish I could get wear like that. Looks half worn before you started, so 3000km a tyre....sounds pretty good to me.

I am pretty easy on my tires, so I expect alot from them.

Now I need a new tires, tossing up between a MT 21 and a T63.
Probably go for the MT21 since it is a little more agressive. I understand they don't last that long, but I just need something decent for a few trail rides before xmas.
For the summer long trips I think I shall end up putting a MT90 on.

As soon as the rear looses it's edge it turns to crap and might as well be bald.
The nubs (don't deserve the title "knobs") massage the ground which says "Oh yeah, that hits the spot. Just do that for a while".
I've had more traction on snotty uphills with the Shinko 705 than the MT21 (after having to get off and push with the MT21 I went back the next day with the 705 mounted and went up the same line on the hill).

You've never ridden with knobbies on the road have you? They aint that bad.

AC10 cheaper and extremely agressive, its just an DOT rated MX tyre totally wicked off road but eeeeekkkkkk on the wet seal

My T63 wore very similar to your karoo. I'd recommend the mitas E09 personally. But I'm going to go for an E07.

I'd run a E09 over a MT21 for adv rides and a D606 over a T63 over a MT21 for mixed adv/trail. Problem is that the MT21 is the only one that acutally comes in the right size for a 690 (or 950) though the 690 could probably run a 130/80-18 (or equvalent) i.e. T63 or D606 or E09.

Of couse if you want full blooded trail/dual sport tyre the AC10 does come in the right size (120/90-18 is basically the same as 140/80-18 - I've got a AC10 and MT21 in the garrage) and is cheap as chips compared to any of the tyres above.

Thinking about it I have do have a MT 81 in the garage, but I fear that tire would last about a weekend trip, so I might have to put that on the day before the trail ride. I guess I can squeeze a few more weeks out of the Karoo.

Read a bit more. The MT21 rear is no more aggressive than the T63, but wears faster and loses its grip even sooner.
