I think you will find that if you look "pootle" up in the dictionary you will find "fireliv" next to it- a word invented to describe my riding last season. However I started this season with a tiny bit more gusto- still rusty.

Otherwise a good ride, liked the pub so would be keen to incorporate it into another ride.

I know what you mean; except I've lost my nerve over the past few months which explains my very poor riding lately.

Well I also had a lovely wee pootle last night. (Is "pootle" the new official term used for a great ride?) Got my new tire scrubbed in with no problems. I got quite cold last night on the trip home, should have worn warmer gear, yea I know...... I am really looking forward to summers warmer evenings.

Really great to see so many new faces, don't be shy with this group, it's important that you introduce yourself and feel included in all the good natured crap that goes on here.

I'm just glad that no one binned it (to my knowledge anyway). It would have been very easy to crash on some of those patches of gravel if the rider panicked and hit the anchors.

thats one reaon for the rides, to boost riders confidence in situations outside of the norm.
The small shingle patches we encounted last night were very easy to deal with even for a learner. It teaches confidence in your ability that comes from repetativly dealing with situations like that, which hone your skills into doing what is right .
Following another rider over a patch of shingle can give you confidence, because you see someone else do it safley..then you should be able too as well.

Yes theres was a good pace on last night, and there were a few places where the potential for an incident was evident. But there were no incidents.
Good riding people... all of you.

Well, with that big long patch of gravel, I was slowing down for a corner when I hit it. I didn't want to brake as I've locked my front wheel too many times braking on gravel, and I didn't want to steer out of it because then there would have been a good chance of me going for a slide. My only other choice was to do nothing and end up on the wrong side of the road.

IMO on gravel use your rear brake gently, relax your grip on the bars, allow the bike to float under you. If you tense up, any sharp movement of the front wheel can upset your line of travel, being relaxed allows that small movement tohappen and will be compensated by the gyroscopic effect of the wheels.
You bike natuurally wants to stand up stright, sometimes you just have to trust your bike more than your skills.

I'll second that and your previous post.
And remember ...... if it hasn't got one of "Uncle Flip's" prosthetic kickers it isn't a real motorbike!!!
