AC10 would disappear in 1000kms on your XR and a full on knobby is not really required for adventure use. I recommend the mitas E09 or E07. These will get you anywhere.

ive got both and i use both and a T63, i even use M12s the E09 is my Fav
but what ever cash i got at the time of needing to purchase is what determines what i buy... i use up the M12s close to home gravel and they all $1 auctions and i chuck the T63 or e-09 on for most bigger trips where theres gonna be seal and i use the AC10s for looking at 42nd/ fisher type rides as im friggen useless and they help keep me upright better than the others at the moment ive got a $10 TW30 on for the wet winter roads and its been a lot less skiddish in the wet than the others.... recording all klms so will be interesting to see how they all stack up over the coming summer, i can see the 12s going under a 1000kms i managed 2500 from the AC10 so that wernt to bad concidering it did a few road klms (knobs on side hardly touched with total flat boldish in the middle) 4k out of the T63 so might keep that for the next longish trip it just over half worn.
just trying what ever to find what works for me on my tight arse budget.
oh buy the way i never will put crap on the front thats one tyre that i want to trust.

Thought you were into adventure? .

My T63 will be lucky to see 2500kms. E07 on next. Rode padmei's KLR down nelson thru some slippery mush and was inpressed how well the bald (in the middle) E07 held up. Had an E07 on the rear of the R1100GS and it just wouldn't wear out. Ran a 140/80x17 E09 on the 525 and that was the only tyre on the rear of that to get better than 2000kms. Mitas well get the best eh.

I've just pulled the rear Shinko 705 off the mighty DR.
I thought it had another 1000 km in it but after the Porika ride I see that the chip seal is actually wearing the wear indicators.

Apart from the wet clay on the Porika pylon track it hasn't given me any grief at all.

Once I've worn out this $10 E07 I think another 705 is going to go back on.
There's nicks and slices all over the carcass but small wonder knowing where it's been and what it's done.

    The front is still mint.

    $120 for 9,000km isn't bad.
The E07 goes about 30% further for about 30% more.

Be good to compare my old favorite with my new one

Mefo tyres were mentioned earlier in this thread, does anyone know if they can be sourced in New Zealand?

Got a new MT 21 for the front $99 thought that was pretty good, was looking at a change but have found them to be a good all round front tyre. I get 2 rear tyres to 1 front. Need a 65/35 towards off road tried TKC [scary on wet seal], MT 21[wear square], Desert [overheat on seal],all had their good points but stuffed within 1800km any suggestions.

Just had a TKC80 put on the back of the 950 this morning, I'm doing a durability test on it for my local dealer.

It'll get about 1200km's of seal this weekend to break it in.

KM's when the tyre went on 76547.

Just spent near on 2hrs changing over my front tire, got it done, managed to bugger the tube in the process,

Just took it to cycletreads so they can fix it. lesson learnt.

At least I know I can get the tire off if I needed when out on the road. But damn my hands are sore.
