    Enduro cross set-up / test

Well that was a lot of fun, and quite challenging. My first proper lap with Shane I managed to get the bike beached on logs twice, and he felt I was working too hard so they re-arranged some things to make it less committing. Note I did not do the upright tractor tyres or the crotch-high log - took the questionably-named 'easier' options - and a few of the bigger step-ups I always took the slower ramped option. (What actually happens in race conditions is that a queue forms for the single-line easy option, and the better riders have a clear full width of track to bomb straight over the tougher part.)

The logs actually weren't the worst thing, as they can be taken with aplomb and it is all sweet. A bit more speed and the bike just climbs over nicely, a lot more speed and they act like jumps. The worst thing was a series of pallets arranged in low peaks jammed together like this: ^^^^ where the bike bottomed out hard on each peak - that _really_ throws you off course, literally. Might have to treat them like sand whoops, take at speed floating the front. Several times the juniors ended up off-piste, several times they had great saves... as did I. The second worst thing was a series of pallets arranged in high peaks, with flat tops, but the length of the tops gets shorter as does the length of ground between ramps. Fark that was hard work, and I've done some practice on some easier variants recently!!

As well as the obstacles, the rest of the course is well grassed, so traction is minimal. Half the site is basically flat, then drops down a 5m bank then across a creek and up the other side. So there is some fun grassy/hilly stuff and super-steep banks to launch up & down.

Lastly I had a lap on Nordie's vintage cheddar...err XR250Z... and that was interesting. Sure it was lighter, but with reasonably fresh Michelin S12s it gripped (steer & drive) way better than my thing on the grass; however those tyres made all the obstacles comparatively slippery. I got it beached on one log, didn't get enough clutch out to get drive, but otherwise it didn't seem any easier. It just doesn't stop, turn or bounce like my 640. Plenty enough go.

Shane re-iterated that Nordie's XR was there, and he'll bring Grace's older CRF230, and both are available for use on a you-bust-it-you-fix-it basis. Part of the raison d'κtre for the endurocross is to stretch people a bit and getting them doing stuff they normally wouldn't. As a parting remark, Shane said I should at least do the morning practice, and the first race, on the 640 to psyche out all the MXers.

Lotsa fun, but my arms ache and my forks are twisted even though I didn't crash

    Reasonably fresh S12's?

They're older than most of the NADS children!

10 or so classic mx's and 21 hrs of cross country racing on them.

That bike is very soft on tyres

    Okay, 'somewhat fresh' S12s.

Lets just say they looked new, compared to my tyres. On the grass, they were also the right tool for the job.
    Cheers,

There's no way I'd want to be up there even a day after rain.

Apparently there was a huuuuggge slip bigger than the Kaikoura coast one just past Quail Flat that took out the road...

    Oh well.

    Next time...

So parts 19/20 were floating at the bottom of the carb bowl...hence the reason why it would idle but die under throttle.

I'm suspicious that last time the bike was running well (when I texted y'all), that when I opened the throttle into the 100km/h area by the MDF plant that the main jet and washer fell off

Not too sure how it worked its way loose...

Will have a play this week and see if I can get it all sorted

Actually on the subject of carbies, After having the bike land upside down the other week, it wasn't running real well and was flooding so I pulled the carby to bits the other night and blew clean r carb through all the orifices etc and had a good looksee.

On the Porika ride yesterday she was running better than I can ever remember. Was pulling real nice from low revs, there was no need to rev it much at all.

Might make this a regular maintenance routine now.

Well the enduro cross was a great day out. Rode my '05 640A in the C-grade Clubmans, Nordie's '79 XR250Z in the Classics, and Grace's '04 CRF230 in the Enduro class.

Only did 2 laps each time on the 640, it's was just too big, under-tyred, low-slung, and tiring compared to the others. Got it beached again at one point. Although I did get the hang of the sharp ^^^^ section, they got their revenge last time out when I fell off the last one, breaking an indicator - the first breakage in 5.5 years - and another time I got seriously out of shape right in front of the videographer but she assured me she got it all on fillum so it wasn't wasted effort. And to top it all off, I arrived with a flat tyre so I had to fix that before racing.

The venerable XR was good fun, f@ck does it find traction at low speed in the tight gnarly stuff. I had a Biaggi moment big time in the first race on the fastest section of track after the creek crossing: up the hump the front wheel came up then wouldn't go down, in fact it went up some more... right to the point I was un-weighting the pegs... then while I was looking for the softest patch of grass to eat she somehow started dragging her arse and the front came down. Bill approached when I parked the bike after the race, "btw I forget to tell you, after you ride through water the throttle seems to stick open"... goodonyamate.

In the last classic race I was chasing someone along that same fast open section that ends with an almost-stop right-hander down a sheep track into the creek. He was pretty late on the brakes, and then I thought bewdy he's missed the turn-in point and is going to run-on past the turn, then I thought nup, he's still got the throttle tapped - wheelspin and wheelie - and he's bailed off with the bike tumbling in to the barbed-wire fence. He was ok, the bike a mess, apparently his throttle stuck wide open, and Shane said he didn't have a front brake anyway

The 230 initially I found heaps shorter in the wheelbase so it handled wildly differently over the sharp up/down transitions we were doing, ie almost all the obstacles and embankments. But I got the hang of it eventually, although I got it beached a couple of times, mostly because the lower footpegs were hanging up on the joints between the tyres 'cos I wasn't hitting them fast enough to flick the bike over.

Big thanks to Nordie and Grace for their generosity, and Shane for his encouragement. Now I really do gotta get my 200 exc *and* the '84 DR250 going. And youse fellahs really need to extract digit and come and give it a go, if you don't enjoy it and don't ride better at the end of the day, then there's no help for ya.
    Cheers,
    Colin

Good stuff WW. I'd love to have a go at that kinda stuff - but at a 'sensible' pace. maybe i'll start looking for a DRZ400 next year as all the smaller bikes seem to cost twice as much or are pieces of shite.

Anyone got any ideas for the next NADS ride? i still haven't done the Aorere goldfields but that's a bit knarly isn't it? If there's a tamer one I'd love to take Schmidtty for a cruise.
