I'm off to the North Island on the 3rd so unfortunately can't be the trailer towerer

Edit: I'm actually off on the 4th and have permission to steal the car for the day so I can be towerer/umbrella holder! Is your trailer hitch 50mm or 1 7/8" Colin?

I am very tempted to leave whatever it is im doing on the 3rd and pop in for a few hours to spectate .
Might have to organise a lift home though ,its real hard to ride when youre doubled up with laughter ,recon this is going to be a real side splitternot to be missed.

    Tether Switch Help.

OK I admit that I can do most of the work on bikes, but I have a major retardation issue when it comes to wiring. My father was(is) a very highly qualified electrical engineer, but none of that knowledge filtered through to me.

The kill switch has 5 wires going to it, but the tether switch has 2, how the hell do I know which ones to use. They also all go into one plug along with the starter switch to confuse the issue even further.

WW mentioned earlier to use it to cut off the coil?

Padmei how did you do yours?

    BTW I don't speak multimeter

Passing through your guys way on Xmas day staying with my mates mum in Nelson( mate is at sea in the Antarctic for a few months) Karl Eggers any of you people know him???
We had a fantastic new year in Nelson in the early 80s while the races where at Tahuna beach in the past.
Any way I am aiming to be back up for the return crossing on the 4th and staying again in Nelson on the 3rd be cool to see them again and we spent many a drunken day on Rabbit Island 20 odd years ago, so would be great to attend this event.

    Maybe see you all there

Hey Woodman I did mine today.

If you undo the 2 screws & take the kill switch off you'll see 2 wires going to the kill switch & some going to the...

Aw fck it either bring it round here one nite or I'll come to you - saves a lot of talking. it is only a 2 minute job when the tanks off & you've got all the gear.
I'm good till Thursday then gonna bail tothe bach for xmas.

OK bike prep is almost done. I fitted the bars, tether switch & since I was in the groove I fitted my new tyres - oh so nice - almost too nice to ride on. Def feels taller with long knobs on.

I covered the bike with liberal amounts of silicon spray. I will get a new oil filter & some antifreeze- (does it matter which kind for bikes???) & give it an oil change.

Korumba you'll def see us there. Call in to the pits & if you're lucky we'll let you hold a brolly for us.

Cheers Might take you up on that. I was thinking about it some more and readin wws post and if I put it before the coil then that should work. I will try it tomorrow night and if it don;t work I will use the bat phone.

    1. Ok open up the kill switch button arrangement thing. There should be 2 wires that are connected to the red kill switchbutton - look closely it shouldn't be too hard to distinguish the kill button connections from the starter connections.

    2. Take a note of what colour they are - mine are brown & something.

2 1/2. take off tank (which as you know means taking off all the rest of the crap)

    3. OK trace the black plastic sleeving those wires are enclosed in down around the tripletree, to under the tank. they should end at a plug. Can you see it? No? Have another look... There you go.

    4. Double check that you have the correct wires in the correct black plastic sleeving. OK now split the sleeving to about 50mm back from the plug - don't ask why just do it & don't nick the wires.

    5. Cut one of the wires from the kill switch (remember I had brown but I'm not sure what colour you have) about 25mm from the plug. carefully strip the ends of the wires about 7.5mm back from the ends.

    6. Ok now turn the key on & try to start the bike. Doesn't want to start? Good. Twist the 2 ends of the wires back together & try to start the bike again - remember to turn the key on... wants to start? good. That means you've found a good wire to interupt.

    7. Use a couple of wire connectors - either crimp or screw, & attach one end of the tether switch to one of the wires you cut & the other to the other.

    8. Turn the key on again& kill switch on try to start the bike with the tether bit inserted in the new switch. Wants to start? good.

    Sorry laptop died

Ok Now the tether switch is wired into the kill switch wire circuit. if it wants to start when the tether is in it is good. Now pull the thether out - Watch out!!! I nearly lost my fricking eye with mine today. The bike shouldn't want to start.

If this is works then all is good & you can tape up the black sleeving carefully & tuck it all back in place.

    Troubleshooting.

If the bike wanted to start when you cut the wires, stripped them back, twisted them together temporarily & tested them, but doesnt when the tether switch is wired in, try it with the thether part out. Wants to start now? Damn you have the wrong type of switch - take it back & complain.

If it's all too much for a bloke from Richmond give us a holler.

    fcuken tether switch.
I tried every single wire and all that happens is the bike won't start. The tether switch is working fine and definitely stops the starter motor cranking when unplugged, but once its going it won't kill the engine. (angry smiley here)
I will go back to plan A and hook it up to the coil tomorrow night.

Could you not just cable tie it onto the bars and be done with it
Or do they actually check to make sure it works
