    Diesel on the road

Why can't buses get fuel caps that keep the fuel in!

Just about had an off today! going around a tight corner the bike decide to go a bit side ways because of 5-10 liters of diesel on the corner

I have see the Lower Hutt buses regularly spilling diesel as they go around corners

has any one else had the same problem "partially in lower hutt"

    Thumbs up

Because if you haven't it's other bikers who will pay the price as they come off and get hurt and those accidents will be labled Single vehcile accidents, RIDER at fault!
So please, ring the bus company concerned.
Ring the council and make a serious complaint about the buses not containing their fuel and about the state of the now seriously dangerous corner for motorcyclists in particular.
When you have done that, please make sure to get a reference number from the council so that sometime in the near future it can be followed up.
Either by your good self or by a MAG-NZ Representative of your choice who would gladly do it on your behalf.
We need to get off our arses and do this people, not that I'm giving the OP a hard time about it, just trying to get them and all of you uip to speed.
    BITCH, MOAN, WHINGE AND SCREAM.
    At the relevant Authorities.
They actually have to follow it up once a complaint has been made.
Make these sorts of things yours and every other motorcyclists business.
    Ring/text/Email, Write.
But please don't just tell the forum or your local mates who also ride.
Thinj of the next poor sod on a bike.
    Please.

Methinks you misjudge the 'god squad'
I was a truckie from 98-01 and while various members of the road fraternity think the god squad is all about revenue, I recall following other trucks through the desert road where they sat on the white line as a visual guide due to fatigue, and the 2nd (some cases even third) log book hidden under the seat to manage to get more OT...

Give the cops a break, as you said the bus company blew you off, the god squad in Wellington have at least two motorcyclists in the crew, one with a Motoguzzi who came on the bikeoi

Good post about the diesel, shitty post about the only supportive response you actually received.
And a fact is these guys would have gone to inspect the corner, and had you provided a bus fleet vehicle number would definitely have followed it up with the fleet manager.

FYI the guy with the Guzzi attended a diesel related 'off' on the Taka's on Sunday.... on his own day off because no 'god squads' are particularly active on weekends to keep the freaking budget WE pay for down as low as possible

Judge not the motivations of the local law enforcement, they are there for YOU too matey

Yeah but not for about 2 years?
Had a case of road rash after discovering Diesel on the Petone motorway/esplanade roundabout at 6am one day.
Just about got nailed by a car sliding on it as I went to pick up the bike in the aftermath.

I'd go so far as to suggest to Mr Morgan and his ACC funded crew that perhaps this is an issue they could take a look at. Make it part of a heavy vehicle COF inspection etc. Or maybe make them fit a catch tank etc.

There's also this..not sure if would be much help in this particular situation... but

    Report a Road, 0800 44 44 49 - To report immediate problems, Nationwide - State Highways only

"A system for the reporting of hazards/problems/incidents on state highways is now in operation.

It’s called Transit Road Event Information System (TREIS).

The phone number to report a hazard is free call 0800 4444 49, Nationwide.

Anything requiring immediate attention is phoned through to the relevant highway contractor (the TREIS people have all the relevant boundary details/call out personnel, numbers etc.), as they are the first point of call.

It is followed up with an email.

The person reporting the hazard /incident will be asked several standard questions and a report will later be generated by the “updater organisation e.g. Opus.

The system is not used for longstanding road quality issues e.g. camber or width of shoulder etc. and is only for state highways."

Well outside the scope of the fund for it to be spent on a private transport companies vehicle fleet dude... and not what I for one as one of 'Morgans Crew' would approve expenditure on, its a private commercial vehicle maintenance issue and one I have addressed before

Maybe we could pay for a leaflett or booklet to be sent to the bus/trucking companies explaining the massive danger this represents to us riders and the wider cage community (they skid on diesel too with less dire consequenses to the driver, still bad for us tho) but someone needs to put the proposal through the yet to be details tender system

BUTwe can sure ask BRONZ to lobby the NZTA to have this included in the COF checks - if its not already in the system and just being poorly enforced.

And I will personally ask the NZTA road safety manager who would be able to check on this for you - good thinking and thanks for bringing it back into my very small attention span

I just had my periodic WOF review yesterday and the one thing that the inspector pulled me up on in the inspection process was my failure to check that the bikes fuel cap had an adequate seal.

I imagine it is already a requirement for the COF process that is just poorly enforced.

    Thanks for that matey

I will follow up with NZTA and maybe the MTA as well to ask this be reviewd for an enforcement drive at all levels on the grounds its getting so frequent its tragic

The LH bus company have a poor record of diesel spills from their buses and the Council have taken them to task over it.

Please report any sightings of buses spilling diesel to the local Council immediately.

The bus company put in place several control measures to control spills some years ago but it would seem things have slipped.

Wellington buses are bad too on occasion.
Someone once suggested the caps themselves are not a 100 percent seal because the tank is actually vented THROUGH the cap! They need to be vented otherwise a vacumn is created as the tank empties...
They need to perhaps modify the tanks with a seperate high mounted vent line and actually get caps that seal
