I'll probably be doing the same next week, put in a day leave so I don't have heaps of traffic/idiot bikers etc.
Will probably do a standard clockwise loop (already done clockwise, albeit in shit weather) from kopu around to waihi and then either follow SH2 back to kopu, or head back where I came for the Whangamata->Kopu ride.

I've only ever done it anti clockwise as my leaving point is my parents place in Whangamata.

Head north through to coromandel having a ball. Then have a nice relaxing time enjoying the west coast scenery before having another blast over the kopu hills back to Whangamata. Then its time for a beer and a good wash of the bike.

I plan on doing it anticlockwise next time which hopefully will be around the 20th of june weather and finding a job dependent. Looking forward to the hill from Coromandel to Matarangi.
It wasn't me officer, I swear!

Roite, so we will beat the east side to death, refuel at Coromandel, and then beat the east side to death.

    Will ride safe. Promise.
Having done it both ways, it's great either way. Anticlockwise will give your brakes, wrists and neck a workout coming down towards Coromandel, but certainly get at least that far before turning back via Whitianga. You'll miss some nice scenery otherwise.

The Thames to Coromandel side is fine for taking it easy after the ride around the top with some great views. Just be prepared for the traffic and ride very conservatively from about halfway down.

Haven't done the loop on a bike but have driven those roads on 4 wheels. Don't fancy the Kopu - Coromandel road either way. But the hill east of Coromandel looks great, pity you have to either drone up the west coast or dawdle through all those small towns on the east coast to get to it.

From Tauranga I like to take SH2 to Waihi Beach (maybe take a side trip up Old Highway at Whakamaru), there's a nice cafe there - The Porch. Then head out of the other side of Waihi Beach as if going to Waihi, turn right onto Trig Road and go through to the Waihi-Whangamata Road (turn up Landlyst Road about 200 metres from the Waihi-Whangamata Road and have a look at the Waihi Academy). Through Whangamata to Hikuai and head over the Hikuai-Kopu Road. Go through Kopu towards Thames, there's a great cafe at the garden centre opposite the airport.

Head back through Kopu, over the Kopu bridge and back to SH2, head back to Paeroa, turn right over the bridge and follow the road to Te Aroha. Go through Te Aroha onto the Old Te Aroha Road which comes out close to the foot of the Kaimais. You can drop down to Okoroire for a burger. Or head up over the Kaimais home. That's my mini-Coro loop.

Clockwise -> Paeroa, Waihi, Whangamata, Tairua, Coroglen, gravel to Tapu.
If I'm in the mood up to Coro Town, then across to Whitianga before heading back down on the east.

Otherwise the substitute the Tapu-Coroglen road for the 309 but only if it's been dry for a few days. Doable on a sportsbike too.

From the times I've done the Coromandel, pretty much everyone here has said sage advice, I'd just like to repeat how I avoid riding it in the weekends and on public holidays.

So, if you can, ride it when all the dingbats and moto GP wannabes aren't!

Why suspect? If you don't know, you could always check the FAQ and give him the right info instead of a bum steer by guessing...
