As for drunks, my staff knew my stand in regards to serving drunks....its your fine & your job if you serve a drunk!...sell them some food instead and alert security & myself so we can ensure they are not "feed" drinks or if nessacery -removed from the premise!
So the responcibility IS on the bar manager and their staff! If they come through the door, we look after them! & we take responcibility for them (that was our job), to the point where shouting a taxi for anyone who needed it was covered by a "taxi fund" that we invested in (this ensured our patrons would get home safe & they always apriciated it).
As for drugs!!....if you bought drugs into my bar....well....pitty you!
I had a very good relationship with the local cops and they where MORE than happy to pop down and scrape up what was left of a drug pusher......BUT, as I ran a ROCKBAR! We realised alot of the regulars smoked the wackybacky....easy!, we sent them across the road to a offstreet car park to smoke it....the Cops all knew what they were doing over there, but just walked past and gave Us a wave -as Sarg said to me one night: "we know were they are, what there doing and that we were directing them there....but we also know there being monitored by you & your staff and were happy to turn a blind eye as there not causing any trouble or doing it in sight of the public"....now thats reasonable aint it! (But bring it into the bar....and I would ban you for LIFE! and call the cops!)
I like the attitude and responsibility you showed, pity that as the world has become more $ focused people such as yourself are forced out of the industry. I also like the attitude of the police in working with you and not against as they are so often portrayed.

    Cheers mate

Yeah I left the industry because I strongly objected too selling piss to children!....and I really got sick of explaining the law to them just to get swung at or spat on!
The cops were very good to deal with, very reasonable and they always helped us to keep our bar at the fore front of good standards and service....they were much better than the ChCh City council!... who seemed to be out to protect there mates bars while they ran illegal drink promos and dragged the towns standards down (Chch).
After I lost "self control" one night and nearly seriously hurt a 17yr old for spitting in my face for not letting him in...I walked away and found a new career.

Not always, back in the day I let a mate borrow my ID no-one could tell it wasn't him in the photo, he did look slightly different but really no more than I did, So no-one was able to tell he was only 17 not 18 as I was.

But I guess if ya taking faked ID's rather than borrowed (tho most of these can be spotted too) then yea your probably right

You allude to one of the hidden issues with your comment about the council. I do wonder if whilst these councils like to take pot shots at bars they aren't also a big part of the drinking problem.

I understand how immature youths can be, it is not like the 17 year old didn't know the law in the first place. And I think this also makes the issue worse as they only ones willing to put up with that sort of shit are the ones that don't care about their customers, they only see the $ signs.

LOL, yeah its hard to spot look alikes...but if he had looked young, we would have posed the "trick" questions in regards to his ID - Star sign etc, you can't catch them all, but its about the constant effort & vigilance @ the door.....we got them eventually ..then banned them for life! lol

Yeah the local council is shocking in regards to the double standards and looking ou for there mates as such....really used to piss me off!, run a clean bar and watch the unit down the road sell $1 drinks and chuck heavily intoxed kids out on the street all night with apparently no repercussions?...at least we had the cops on our side and great locals who appriciated & respected what we did.

For the record.....I ran the RockyCola Cafe on manchester St- (before that Idiot from Shooters bought it and ran it into the ground!)...put 5yrs hard effort into that place and loved it! Best little Rock bar in NZ and the safest! (Boss got the best Council, LLA, & police report in 30yrs out of that bar & my staff...damn proud of that!)

Ive worked for years at bars, and what I discovered was that 95% of those young poeple thought they had a RIGHT to drink as much as they wanted and do whatever they wanted. When you are an external force trying to place some boundaries for safety, you get spat on, shoved, told to fuck off, have the nature of your parentage questioned, call a fucking coon ass scum nigger who should fuck off back to africa, and thats just the polite stuff. Theres also the ones that just start throwing punches when its suggested to them that they have had a couple too many. More often than not, their friends will jump in too. They'll insist 'nah nah nah, hes ok Bro, we will look after him, nah its sweet, he can stay' On the few occaisions you trust these friends, you see these friends at the bar 5 minutes later, buying more alcahol for the intoxicated party, because they have been cut off from the bar.

This all stems from all the PC rubbish, where kids are bought up understanding that they have all the rights, and knowing that you cant smack your kids/lay a hand on anyone without them being able to press charges and drag you through the court system.

Its become less about 'take responsibility' and more about 'fuck you, cunt, I can do whatever the fuck I want'. Of course, when 'doing what they want' results in harm to them, suddenly, the people who tried to provide a boundary and got abused, somehow land with the blame. Its wider than just the individual taking responsibility, It goes back to us having created a society over the last 10-15 years that says kids have all these rights.

Fuck that, theyre kids, they have a right to go to school be fed and kept healthy, and they have a right to shut the fuck up. thats it.

    Rabt over!
