    It runs!

A morning servicing the R80 and disposing of litres of coagulated fuel in the tank and carbs and it runs! Surprisingly well too, nice idle and no obvious faults once the smoke had dissipated from the oil bath I gave it a week ago, the road test was brief as the front brakes still need servicing and calling our suburb Hillsborough is a very fitting description, got exciting trying to stop...

I have to give credit to the designers, this is the easiest motor I have worked on in decades, after working on KTMs this is childs play you can carry out a full service in under an hour.

    Off to buy parts now!

After three years of grief and ruined rides with my 2007 Dakar it will be good to be able to get back into the big South Island rides, with Debbie on the back, during 2012. How is that for progress, right back where I was in 2000 (except I have progressed to Paralever I suppose).

Ah Hillsborough... I lgrew up on Richardson road & had to push my bike to the top of Hillsborough road every nite with saddlebags full of the Auckland Star. Wish I had a moto then.
They are easy to service aren't they. Just got to remember to order everything from motobins at the same time.
Hpefully your brake pistons are ok.
I'd like to ride Kane & co's racebikes & see how different they are to the old banger I've got.

Not feeling completely convinced about letting this bike go. It is a good one and I have spent 5 years getting it so. When I sold my 1989 I soon regretted it and ended up getting this 1992 model, which was poised early on the slide of neglect and bodgery (that afflicts so many 2 valve twins) when I purchased it. Fortunately in time to arrest and repair the deterioration. Would be sad if it slid again.

Sh*t doesn't just "happen". There is always an a*sehole involved.

I forgot you were a local, I'll try to be nice.

Front discs are toast, worn & ridged below the wear limit, pads and calipers are in perfect condition, the master cyl needs a kit (off to my local "can fix any brakes" bloke tomorrow) I'll be on to Motobins later this week then I need to find out about the re-vinning process, should be fun.

    Rated R18

After 6 months in the shed I finally got to the stage where it could be removed from the jig. Threw some wheels at it to see if I should carry on or scrap it what do you think. I will report back again in 6 months no hurry on this one.

I dunno. Strip the bodywork off, dip-strip the frame and you'd almost be there...

Thanks guys, look like I should carry on. This is a scratch build frame from top to toe I have cut welded and built everything on it hence the time it has taken so far. The most important part was getting the jig set up so that the swingarm pivot point and the engine are in the correct place and that the steering head was vertical to the pivot point axis having confirmed this now by checking this twice I will continue.
Steve thanks for the links on the other site I dont think there is a GS adv bike build thread on there that I havn't read. Unlike most of those builds they leave and use the original rear subframes which are Bl--dy heavy in themselves. Once I sort out the rear shock and build a rear mount directly at the end of the top main tube I will be modifying and adding on the YZ rear sub frame kilos kilos kilos !!!!! The fuel tank will be in the frame above the gearbox I have done a rough calculation and should get between 12-14 litres in there I think all the wait is going to be low watch this space more pics in 6 months.
