Since I have bought my bike, or even before that, every second person i meet who knows I am into motorcycles talks about accidents. It is always some other person they know of who had been in an accident. They often show interest in biking and most say they want to buy a m'cycle for themselves, but then inadvertently shift the topic to accidents. I hate such clairvoyants who claim to predict my destiny indirectly. And I am not talking about family and friends whose genuine concerns you can see. I say if you don't have anything nice to say then just shut your mouth. A simple `Be Safe' would suffice. I don't wanna talk about accidents and how people die. I have been driving cars for 15 years and I understand the risks. I have made an informed decision.

Sorry if I wasted anyone's time, but I need to get this out of my mind.

Tell these people to FUCK OFF.
DO they have a right to oversee, and question your right to make your own decisions and choices, as long as you arent doing anything blatantly illegal?
are they gonna tell you not to bang your missus up the arse and cum on her face because THEY think its 'degrading'?
are they gonna tell you not to wear white after labour day because it breaches THEIR fashion code?
are they gonna tell you who to vote for in the election because THEY think they know whats best for YOU?

These cunts have no place in taking some self-perceived moral highground over YOUR life decisions.
Tell them to go get fucked, its what I do.

If they respect YOU as a person, theyll respect your decisions, if they dont, well, you dont need cunts like that around you eh.

I'll get shit for this , because I bet there is the odd Doctor or Nurse on here.

If you do happen to crash and end up in hospital, some people there that are helping you will tell you, " if you crash again and break that arm/ shoulder/ leg/ whatever, there will be no options available other than to amputate it."

Got a mate at the mo who has just been told that, but as I pointed out, it took 54 years to break it for the first time, so the odds are in his favour because he will be long gone before he breaks it again.

Bit like the the 100 year flood. It will never happen again...

The fact that we are part of the statistics that get rolled out every time the govt departments that thrive on such things, need a boost to their profiles, doesn't help the perception that joe, non riding public, have of us. If the statistics for the weekend's carnage on the sports fields, mountains, pistes, kitchens, bbq's was rolled out in the Monday morning newspaper and hit the 6.0'clock news, we wouldn't even get a look in, unless there was lots of blood.

Hey look you pedants, no unnecessary ellipses or any blatant disregard for our beloved tongue,much...until next time.

I was gassing up the bike at the servo this morning when some dude pulled up in his car. He got out, looked at the bike and came on over.

    He: "Hey, nice bike!"

Me: "Yeah, thanks, I like it"

He: "What is it - a GSR?"

    Me: "Nah, GSX-R. It's a 600."

He: "600? It looks bigger than that."

    Me: "Nah, just 600..."

He: "I used to have a .... " and so he went on, all wistful and full of reminiscences.

Me: (eventually) "You oughta get another one then" (He seemed to be yearning for one).

He: (and here's the crunch) "Ahh, nah, my biking days are over - the Mrs. has said NO MORE BIKES..."

Sounds to me like his Mrs is one of those the OP was speaking of...I was tempted to tell him to get a divorce but I bit that bit back...just said "Well, there's only me and the cat so I can do WTF I like..."

He did look a little green though...

If he checks the facts he will see you've been telling porkies.

Now I never said it was the truth or factual, but if someone who knows nothing about a subject starts telling me what I am doing is dangerous, they will get fed bullshit and a BIG

I had a lecture from a neighbour about taking my boys on the bike with me and how much of an irresponsible parent I was.I bit back the usual fuck off response for the sake of neighbourly harmony but did point out that he takes his kids out fishing on a boat.
Fuckem, crossing the road is dangerous so just do what you gotta/wanna do.

    Just remember, life is terminal.

My brother's best mate died of kidney cancer two weeks ago, finally diagnosed when it was far too late. 38 years old.

You've got no idea how long you are going to be here, so do what you enjoy. Now. And don't let those who disagree wind you up.

That would drive me nuts. I'm glad I still fall in the "young and stupid" category, because at least then people don't say much about it.

Funnily enough I yelled at a neighbour the other day for hooning up and down the road on a dirt bike, doing wheelies, no helmet. Though I didn't tell him to fuck off for his disregard for personal safety, it was more the constant doppler effect going past my house that pissed me off.

Just reply that the deceased or injured must have been a bloody useless rider anyway, and that there's probably a Darwinian effect at work - raising the IQ and abilities of the survivors.

That's a subtle insult too, as the deceased or injured is usually a relative.

In the end, why listen to anyone but your own gut? If you want a bike, get one. The world is full of unsolicited opinions, and most of them are wrong anyway.

For me it was quite simple, had a few years without a bike and when I informed my better half I was about to place an order she said something along the lines of: "Like hell you are!" Being prepared for such an event I calmly responded: "It's like this dear, I'm getting a bike, whether the payment comes out of the joint account or the divorce settlement I'll leave up to you." To be fair, I was prepared for the latter, but she chose the former.

As for bikers being killed by cars....mmmm....I'm leaning more toward Scummy's take, in that I've seen more bikers killed by their own enthusiasm as opposed to fellow road users. The good part is that you can learn how to ride properly, at a sane pace and thus reduce the risk immensely. Oh well, that's been my approach anyhow....

Just been asked by the wife when I am giving up bikes due to last nights fatal in town. She doesn't understand.
