Good, I would do the same thing as you.

    But alas I digress.

S.C. after scanning the other posts, and then reading yours. I actually think that you have raised a bigger point than what you think you have.
Have the laws changed much in the last 50 years?
Has tolerance changed much in that time? If so who's tolerance?
    Is it changing now?

While everyone is celebrating the fact that a boy racer got his car crushed, a 5 y/o girl got raped, and the crim got caught.
Now what punishment will the judge find suitable?
What punishment do the people on the street outside the courtroom want?
What is likely to happen if the crims name is made public? Will the law count for anything? Where do we draw these lines?

I don't have any answers. Only more and more questions.
I don't have any answers either but here are my thoughts on your questions.

Have the laws changed much in the last 50 years? Fundementally, no. We have inherited a legal system that has been refined over many many years

Has tolerance changed much in that time? If so who's tolerance?
I think that society as a whole has become more permissive. If you read a newspaper from 50 years ago you'll laugh at what was of concern to citizens. Basic human behaviour hasn't and won'tchange.
Increasing urbanisation and alienation from close societal groups removes much of the control exerted these groups. Live for a while in a small village where everyone knows your business and tell me it doesn't influence your behaviour.

Add to this the unrealistic 'norms' promoted by media and marketting. Oversaturation innoculates.

Is it changing now? The only constant is change...

Now what punishment will the judge find suitable?

The law, justice and punishment are three different animals.
The justice system for all its faults attempts to apply a rule of law as opposed to rule of mob.

Like all of us I sometimes wish the scumbags would simply dissappear in a puff of smoke. But who is to play 'god'. A capricious god is to be much feared.

Seems to me that no matter what laws are made or how many go before the courts for disobeying them the weakest links at the end ie the judge.Pick a crime, drink driving will do then once the courts swing back into action after the holiday break once again you will see upwards of 4/5th time drink drivers still getting a bit of PD,the only way they suffer any real form of punishment is if they manage to fuck someone else's life up whilst doing there thing and even then its still not enough. Are the judges just pussys or are they constrained by the lack of beds in jails etc?either way its a sorry state of affairs.

Shit didn't a child die not far from you because of a single skid, some idiot doing a little skid to show off in a car owned by mum and dad because he would not have got insurance for a 300+ HP Skyline that was modified to and extent it would be considered dangerous on the road. Oh that's right you defended him.

Plonker, these "harmless" actions keep getting people killed, sure 'we' used to hoon/cruise/street race or what ever face you want to put on it, most of the time the police and MoT used to leave us alone as we did not go out of our way to harm personal property, threaten folks, commit random assault and attacks based on the colour of clothing worn by one person or any number of things I keep seeing in the media.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.

Yep and more are going to die while we decide which way to go. Me, a brick wall and a few rounds for those who kill with any sort of weapon, including a bloody vehicle.
Instant prison for fools and cars destroyed there and then, no matter who actually owns them.
Lets get it right for once.

I'm not aware of anyone dying due to a skid near my residence.

I'm still yet to see a convincing argument that proves beyond a reasonable doubt that holding 1 foot on the brake pedal and the other foot on the accelerator pedal simultaneously is suddenly going to kill someone. Is the car suddenly meant to blow up and kill an innocent bystander, or what's supposed to happen? Is a bit of tyre smoke going to cause the apocalypse?

Also committing random assaults on people has no relevance with doing skids, nor does threatening people.
A small percentage of people who do skids also commit random assaults and threaten people, and a small number of Harley riders are also gang members who deal drugs and kill people. Does that mean that every Harley rider is a criminal? I'm also sure that some paedophiles drive Holdens, but does that mean that every male Holden driver is a kiddy fiddler?

Probably not but driving a Holden does nothing to stop me thinking they look like they could be.

SMOKE you seriously have to get out more.
Do you honestly think that EVERYONE ELSE IN THIS THREAD is making up what they've said.
That they all believe that these car enthusiasts are harmless innocent little boys who just wanna have fun.
We've all seen it, right in front of our eyes, we all know someone who has been directly and or in indirectly affected by it.
That's why this is such a hot topic.
An less of the HOLDEN Bashing aye.

The ones that scare me are those that cant even wear a baseball cap the right way round, lets face it there not the most complex things.Combine that with many of the cant work out a baseball cap also seem to have got outta bed and put on the 4 sizes to big jeans which no doubt belong to the token grossly overweight slapper that weighs down the other side of the Prelude, not able to acheive the basics i have no faith in there ability to work out the functions of 3 pedals.
