Only time mine has ever had oil in the airbox is when the bike has been overfilled with oil.
Make sure you are checking your oil levels with the bike completely flat and the engine is warm.

Funny you should say that. I _may_ have been guilty of topping up when the oil was cold but that was only _after_ finding oil in the airbox. Had my bike serviced on Monday and checked the oil level today when getting fuel (so oil warm) and the level looks pretty damn high. Right to the top of the sight glass. Maybe I'm foolishly thinking the professionals know what they're doing.
Sounds like you're onto it there. The pre 690 LC4 motors are very prone to spewing oil into the airbox if overfilled, my 640 Adventure did it once after a particularly energetic raping one day on the highway, enough to drip out the airbox drain over the shock mudguard and onto the rear wheel. Eeeeeek! Thereafter I kept a close eye on the oil level and never did it again. Never had an issue after it had been on it's side. Measure that oil exactly when filling 'er up
And if the price of Motorex is crippling ya, try some of this AGIP synthetic goop http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-...-461324600.htm
Yep, me as well.....The 640A had to be bloody exact with the quantities...I recall stopping and seeing the exact same thing, air box was full of oil. the rear tyre splattered and the swing arm a mess. I thought the engine had shit itself, but it was my fault, just putting a tad too much into the engine...It was a matter of draining a little and then re-reading the manual
