I didn't think!!! I experimented!!!
There is, at least in my view, a profile of women in the "spotlight" who are narcissistic attention seekers by nature - perhaps Nikki Watson, Ali Mau, Sally Ridge / little girl Ridge are good illustrations of this category; and they stand up for stupid causes like being a lesbian or whatever, simply because it gives them attention. In the Ridge's case, they stand up for the cause of being stupid. Point is, the somatic narcissism is the root cause for their need to be in the spotlight and get that attention.
Flipping this for a second - who can you point to and say, "holy shit, she's a wonderful role model"? I can think of Sarah Ulmer, and then I run out of ideas... So, in the vacuum, instead of quality role models and people to respect, this is what we get instead.
Actually, thinking about this, in the vacuum of great male role models and leadership, we get people like John Key running the country...
Now, unless someone starts posting pictures of hot lesbians fisting or whatever, I think this thread is getting boring... [/I]
It’s diametrically opposed to the sanitised existence of the Lemmings around me in the Dilbert Cartoon hell I live in; it’s life at full volume, perfect colour with high resolution and 10,000 watts of amplification.
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded

Poor brilliant Alan committed suicide which says much about the attitudes of society at that time. Its odd though - the Brits accepted homosexuality with a nod and a wink for generations so we have to wonder if Alan suffered from his own demons. Oscar Wild died early, shortly after being released from prison.
As for Ali Mau - all the newspaper article is doing is reporting her support of Rainbow Youth. She's not attention-seeking or phoning up the Harold to cheerlead the (ahem) fishwife menage.
She has made a personal sexual choice: she is well known...for being well known. That's what we do with people who are on tv. Sad eh.
Her public profile means her active support for a cause catches more attention. We don't have to like it, we don't have to agree with her, but it's foolish to pretend she shouldn't draw publicity. There's possibly a little ego involved but Ali Mau is on tv every week - she doesn't need more attention, she's already in NZs tiny pool of celebrities.
Alan Turing does not even deserve mention in the same millennium as Ms Mau.
His contribution to society and the world in general is immeasurably superior to some female who decided she wanted to play for the same team and then make a platform about it.
Personally I could care less where she get s her sexual kicks, but could(and have)listened to Alan Turings theories and studies for hours and hours.

My mum and Dad and immediate family, my teachers , my coaches, My neighbour's and my friends.
Were all positive role models. Do we need any more?
Celebs and Athletes need not be role models. it is nice when they are positive ones just as educational when they are negitive ones.
but its not really their job to be role model for us, or our children is it?

Are celebs role models? I actually discourage my girls to look at celebs (whether in sports, fashion, media, etc), as role models or example of reality. They are as likely to disappoint as they are to encourage.
Husaberg is right, the good folk around you, the everyday hard working, common sense and loving encouragers and mentors are the genuine role models, not those who excel in sports, look good in underwear catalogs or work in the media - they're already overpaid to begin with.

Your beliefs don't make you a better person, your behaviour does.
Q: "Are celebs role models?"
A: yes, whether you like it or not. They aren't good ones, you can even try to teach your childern they are negative ones, 'don't do this yourself'. However the media, teachers and trheir mates will refer to them and use them as role models. Because modern society see celebs as the top of the heap (dung heap) then regardless of what you try, role models they are. Also because the media love scandal, the worse they are the more they will be pushed at you.
In the end all you can do is help your children make wise choices. Keep up the good work and wish you success.
Cheers, thanks OOS...![]()
