M109, Rocket III, V Rod and (possibly - depending on how you class it) V-max owners may differ. :-)

They're gutless as fuck compared to a decent 600.

I loved it.....my favorite Harley by FAR for my typical day to day riding.

    UPSIDE:

    Great value for dollar
    Decent power
    Great torque
    Comfortable riding position
    Good handling/brakes
    Quite stable
If you're a decent rider you can still hang with your mates on faster bikes
Good gearing for real world use

    DOWNSIDE:

A bit heavy....it could go on a diet......like cutting off those horrible and heavy stock pipes for a start.
When riding you don't notice the weight much once moving.....but under very heavy braking it starts feeling a "bit" chunky again.
Short legs......150km of riding reasonably aggressively and you NEED to tank up.
If you're looking for a highway cruiser....this isn't you.....comfortable commuter riding position, but NOT touring....thin seat....and not geared well for constant high speed.

The only reason why I sold mine is because I've got young kids...and I couldn't help riding like a frickin' hoon......I'll have one again someday.

Just my opinion, and I'm biased.
    Biased? What part is biased...?

See all this talk about BIG INCH V twins, and the lovely noise they make? Has just woken the child up.

    V-max
    Rocket
M109 and V-rod are about the same. The Suzuki has more surge down low, the Harley is very strong near peak revs.

I just don't understand the aim of the XR1200. It's far from a traditional cruiser, and it sort of pretends to be a sports bike. It's not really good at either of those. It can't really decide what kind of bike it wants to be!

From watching an XR1200 race in the Formula Methven, it accelerated a lot slower than the 600cc bikes.

It was designed to look like the old XR750, which was a choice flat-track bike.
Sadly, as sexy as it is, the flat track style 'zorst is on the wrong side.
    So, I'll re-phrase that:
It's the only nice looking modern Harley IMO and a wonderful marketing success, which is what they're all about because there's nothing else going for the shitters.

    I'd own an XR1200 BTW.

Sounds like a good setup....especially the Ohlins, and chopping off those heavy pipes.

If it wasn't for the smallish tank and my inability to ride the XR in anything but a hooliganish manner I could handle riding it some distance......but I have run into a fair few folks who felt the small-ish tank combined with a thin seat didn't make for a good combo for long distance stuff.....but good on ya for doing the long K's on the XR....I always started worrying about fuel when I was more than 100-150km into a ride.
