I have done a couple of trackdays on my dyna and xr ,on my dyna I was at manfeild going down the back straight and in my mirror see an R1 coming up behind so I pull to the outside of the track to give him room as of course I'm on an old harley and he's faster than I,so we hit the corner and fuck me I had to pass the guy around the outside and as went across the start/finish line he passes me again, by this time I'm shaking my head thinking to myself that man needs to learn how to go round corners. At the same track on my xr this time I had a guy pass me down the front straight on the latest ducati monster we hit the first corner and I way outbraked him and he didn't pass me again until we hit the back straight and afterwards he came up to me and said that once he passed me down the straight he thought he wouldn't see me again (because I was on a harley) and shit bricks when I outbraked and went under him in the first corner. So sometimes you have what would be classed a superior motorcycle, but it isn't any good if you can't ride it properly.

The Japs make the best bikes, although I do like some of the Aprilia, Ducati and KTM range. I have a particular fetish for the RSV4 Factory.

Ducati make some pretty nice big twins that I'd totally fap to. I enjoy my uncomfortable sports bike as the riding position feels great, and it's delightfully easy to chuck it into a bend and the bike does most of the hard work for me since all I really have to do is do the counter steering and throttle control. After owning a pretty good handling bike such as the GSXR I've never looked back.

It's not really as uncomfortable as people make them out to be, although after an hour or more on the seat my ass feels like I've just been released from an African jail with a cell mate named "Abdul", who sports a 10" cock. It's a small price to pay.

What do you mean by best?

Lowest cost, cheapest, na the chineese do that at the moment. Fastest, no the trick ducatti or BMW do that. Most comfortable, the GW comes in equal with the Glide and Polarus.

If you mean quality, ie price, time and reilyability, I still don't agree because I do not aspire to own or ride a two wheel Toyota Corrola.

Best in this context means, usually the fastest, most Corolla like bike?
I have to agree that the Japanese make technically superior bikes in every niche most of the time, it's what they do. Cannot deny that.

A good alternative to a XR1200 would be the Buell XB1200SS Lightning
Better front and rear suspension and more go

The Japanese have proven themselves to produce road going versions of their championship winning superbikes which are both fairly reliable and relatively cheap to buy compared to the European competition. You can't deny the fact that bikes like the ZX10R, CBR1000RR, R1, GSXR1000 and their 600cc counterparts are an out of the box track weapon whose capabilities far exceed that of the vast majority of people who own them. I'd be very impressed if you could ride one of them to its limits.

Agreed the japanese bikes are cheap in comparison... You like Ducati? They are probably the closest to the japanese for lightness and performance, or better.. UNless you can afford an MV Augusta. Guzzi's are a different ball game they are more like a GT than a racer. However as pointed out by another poster about the rider being as critical as the equipment... we (KB) had the TT thread where I posted about Mike the bike... he beat all the top notch jap machines on a Ducati. Damn now I am wishing He or Ago had ridden the Brittan.. what an interesting idea!!
As you point out your 600 'does it for you'.. therin lies the difference, these types of bikes DONT do it for you. I dont care if it only 'just' tops 200kph I have immense fun riding something with pistons the size of cat food tins.

I never liked the Ducatis of the 1990's, but I love the modern ones such as the 1198 and 1199. Pure sex on wheels.

The point is for a road bike - why have a machine capable of 300kmh and that operates at optimum efficiency at 160kph and above - when they take your licence off you for 141kmh.

Better to have a road bike that is in the 'pleasure to ride zone' at 100-120kmh.

    Hello XR1200.

I can afford the bike, any bike, but I can't afford to loose my licence.

So get something properly fast and don't stop for the red and blue lights. I'm full of bright ideas. You can thank me later.
