3 km of extreme 4WD track: steep, rutted, slippery and covered in large volcanic rocks. Wouldn't try it on anything bigger / heavier than a 650. Was glad to get to the top as didn't fancy a downhill version....
I'd be up for a Robinsons Takamatua loop. Last time I did Takamatua was around this time of year and it took two hours to do 2km on my old DR650. Lots of sweating and pushing. Bit easier on the EXC than the DR me thinks.

TA - your WRR needs more dirt and mud me thinks

Nothing joining the two on my Topos and Google Earth looks like a lot of paddock bashing, which would of course require several land owner permissions....
Never heard of anyone doing it not that that means anything.

I've wondered about that one myself, shows as forestry roads on the topomap.

A quick google seems to point to it being Omihi forest in between, and like ashley forest and mt grey I don't think access will be getting better any time soon

It looks like there may be access into part of it, should you want to go look at trees

Oh I see where you looked, off Crofts Rd, I looked further out toward the coast, but yea, pretty sure it's all locked off.
We did look at a couple of other similar places between here and Motanau 5 or 6 years ago, but no go for them too.

Should ride to the end of those roads for a look as a random ride sometime.

Right, well, with that in mind I've decided to move tyres up the list, I'm going to upgrade the rear tyre sooner rather than later, now in fact, I'll just have to pay the Van Rego later instead.

Slightly more seriously - when you do go out for a ride like Pig Saddle etc, just get rid of all the social stops, or if you do stop, 2 min max. Learn to keep the brain in gear for 3-4 hours at a time. Doesn't have to be top gear. Tortise and hare type thing. Just need to keep moving.

Basically on a normal outing we stop often cause the social side of it is what makes it enjoyable. You don't have that much time to stop on a DB1k.
