Shrek is taking the Nana route this time instead of the Awakino which suits me , I am not riding the rena ship over there again DR650 felt like a trials bike after that ride, yes mini me will come with us over the top.

Got me thinking. Started the event in 2007 and I've started every year since - thats 6 starts so far. Failed to finish in 07 (pace was too slow), 09 (recovered two broken down bikes), 10 (Small bore challenge that turned into a small bore vs small bore tow). Also had to skip the Awakino challange in 2010 due to bike issues.

So from 6 starts so far, I've finished 3 and not taken my preferred route on one. Not good!

Nobody is allowed to break down or need help (drowned bike ) this year, ya here.

    Cheers R

aye that will be the plan, the Off-spring will go over the Awakino with Trials rider & I'm taking the nana route with Tr's brother this time, it hurt to much last year, even after eating 16 codien tabs in 20mins (look at me no hands) & it took 4 months for the knee etc to come right, not sure if it had anything to do with riding out or getting back on the next day & riding back to Farlie

still have my on an XT600 but just don't have the coin, so the Rena will do it again & I just had the seat modified so will be a good test for it

but it will be good to catch with ya & the rest for

I run E07 rear, TKC80 front and they work just fine even in the snow last year, the main thing is not to have crap tyres, crap tyre are just hard work and that goes for any brand.

I have always run knobs front and rear T63,eo9,mt21, all good but one dusty = 1 rear tyre for me. This year just got a new mt21 front and gonna run something smoother on the back, probarbly Shinko 244. Grip is not rarely an issue on the dusty but I do like the stopping ability on gravel of a knob compared to a smooth tyre.

and to the tyre question... I'm one of those who chooses decent knobblies, I like all the help I can get and always happy with my choice when the weather turns but yes, others have used lesser tyres in the past with some success. Your XR650 isn't exactly a hugely heavy bike either.

E07 rear and something knobblish in front (D606/MT21 etc) would be perfect.

Apart from the snow, 705's were fine last time.

For the record, I would also like to note that plenty of people running knobs fell off in the snow. No-one running 705's front and rear did

The problem with the XR is the power delivery. Lacking in bottom end smoothness and a real kick in mid range and up top does not engender itself to the more roady oriented tyres...

Knobs and steering with the throttle - yes
