Oooh... I wonder how they measure the speed - radar, point-to-point.

I believe it's point to point, but I could be wrong

    Pace matching

Dunno what they need the bird for, at that speed surely all they need is a cleanup crew

Similar methods get used in Canterbury. They mark the road in the "danger areas being monitored" and count the time the vehicles take to travel between marked points. Then radio local officers to intercept them.

It clearly says in the article on Stuff that the guy was clocked by ground patrols... So I'm gonna guess Radar or Laser. The bird woulda just been to look out for those avoiding patrols or obviously travelling at much higher or lower speeds than the other traffic.

Without the "Locked on speed" by ground staff ... only "exceeding the posted speed limit" could be charged. Locked on speed gives a likelyhood of a better financial return ...

It's BS. Do you really think the police have the financial resources to send a plane up in the air all day. They do it in Arizona and California to scare drivers into slowing down.

The cost of a light plane charter for a few hours of peak time traffic conditions ... and the large area they cover/monitor in that time ... it is actually cost effective ...

Wait until it's drones with laser.

Anytime anywhere, fly in close enough to capture the plate and the ticket is sent

Oh... and police are already testing drones, but I would guess it's more for dangerous hostage type scenarios, where they can have a look at the situation...
