Decriminisation is the logical first step, just as Civil Unions were the first step towards equality and fairness for Homosexuals. There are still a lot of Kiwis, predominantly from Ed & Grubbers generation that have been rounded up like sheep into believing what they do and it will take a long time for that to wash out. Decriminalisation with strict limits for age/posession, better testing technology to test for actual impairment and quality education and awareness right through our society. It's a big job but it's gotta be better than creating 30,000 criminals each year. The cost could be offset somewhat by saving all the money currently being wasted from pops through to courts and prisons.

The liquor companies stand to lose and the legal highs industry would disappear. Foodstuffs & Progressive might be able to offset their losses in liquor with buds at the checkout.

    Waffle, waffle.
You raise an interesting point Ed, although it doesn't help you argue your case any. If I get caught smoking a joint in my living room, doors locked & curtains drawn - I might get a criminal conviction. If I stand on K Road all day & night sniffing a bag of glue until I'm a dribbling mess and annoying people walking past and tax-paying retailers I cannot be charged with a criminal offence and would be treated as a health patient, if I recieve anything other than a popo-funded car ride to under the bridge away from view. Remember BlanketMan?

    Fucking hypocrisy, innit?

Thanks again for pointing that out.

While current laws are not being utilised and advertising isn't working for these people, why add to the mix? Contrary to some nuts here, Cannabis is hardly readily available as is alcohol and legal highs.

The ONLY thing that works is early education to change attitudes and when combined with severe and consistent penalties, behaviour. This covers all areas of concern including cell phone use in cars, as another example.
MJ is freely available. It really isn't hard to hook yourself up with a dealer. You simply ask someone the question et voila. Sure it's easier than walking down to the dairy to pick up legal highs, but they shouldn't be stocking them and I'm very much up for the Dutch model of Cafes etc... But make no mistake, it is readily available. If, as is reported, 400,000 people smoke mj then it's hardly a hard to obtain resource is it? I came off the boat and found someone who smoked within the first day.

Severe and consistent penalties don't work. 400,000 people remember. The who thing is getting ridiculous and the reasons for mj being illegal are a nonsense given the availability of legal highs and alcohol. I agree with education, but I was educated in the just say no era and still went on to take drugs. Why keep pushing shit up hill when you know the core message of the education, i.e. don't take drugs, isn't working, let alone the hypocrisy of legally available substances and their side affects compared to that of mj.

There are perceived to be more positives than negatives if you look at the issue dispassionately. Give me my freedom to choose and if I fuck up, then by all means punish me. If I don't, then leave me the fuck alone to indulge. My wife has no issues with me using and being around the kids, why shouldn't the govt?

I stand corrected, you make a good point, I shall move over to the decriminalization camp. Although I do stand behind my previous argument and would like to see it reach the point of it being my decision completely.

    Point of clarification.

When I speak of education around Cannabis use I don't suggest the message should be "Pot is bad, Mmmmmmkay?". Instead, the message should IMO be one of moderation; "it's not the smoking - it's how we're smoking". I feel also that benefit could be had by educating people that smoking cabbage is a waste of time, one paper is enough and stalks should always, always be removed. Then there's other Cannabis-related nasties like spotting oil made with Isopropyl Alcohol or Acetone and the old favourite of melting aluminium foil, inhaling Aluminium Oxide fumes as you go.

    Smoke smarter, New Zealand.
