Avon calling?

Hi all,
My first message on this site and I think its fantastic...... Avon tyres, I would be keen to hear from riders that use this brand whether it good or not so good. I ride a HP2 (no not with Avons) but hope to pick up a GSX1400 very soon and like the Avons so thinking of fitting them. It must be my British up bringing that I have a liking for Avons and their involvement in earling bike racing. I have checked out many threads and still the Avons have little or no mention? they can't be that bad that no one uses them.

I once ran several sets of Avon Storms on an FJR1300 and an Aprilia Shiver. Mrs H's 120,000km Bandit has spent most of its riding life atop Avon Storms.

However Avon appears to have made a classic mistake of messing with a winning formula. The "upgraded" Storms are not a patch on the model they replaced. I've stopped using them. So too has Mrs H. I'd like to remind Avon that that is not our fault.

Well I guess that says it all........I have used Avons and had no problem the Viper's in fact or is that Cobra's ooops? I found those gave good feed back and great in the wet and I do not like wet riding (who does) anyway I feel a bit pissed off now as not only "do (did) i dont know now" like them I wanted to go off the norm. Regardless I will do more homework.

Warning bells get rung when comparisons are made/assumed with race heritage tyres and road use.

And not all race tyres were created equal. Race wins were usually credited with the riders ability. Not on his tyres. Using Avon tyres never meant a win was a certainty. Nor ANY other brands for that matter.

Oh ... and welcome to the site, regardless of your opinion (and known facts) somebody will be willing to argue. (Some more able to than others though)

I'm about to wear out a set of Conti Road Attack 2s. Then Mr Bridgestone is graciously setting me up with a set of the new T30s to evaluate for him.

And no, with me it's not a "brand name thing". Unlike some bikers I ride tyres other than Pirellis.

I still rate the Avon Storms having used them for many years. However, I must agree with Hitcher that the latest incarnation, the Ultra 2's, don't "feel" as good as the earlier ones. That might be because their profile owes more to their VP2 sport tyre than the original Storms so they're more inclined to tip in rather than roll in.

I'd go on record stating that any of the name brand tyres (sport or sport touring) are all very good and would suit most riders. Then between each brand and different rider there are tyres that are excellent depending on the rider and bike.

The Conti Road Attack 2's presently on my Hornet are the best tyres I have run on it yet. You may put a set on your bike and not like them ...... neither of us would be 'wrong'.

I had a distanza as my front tyre till recently. Swapped it for a TCK80.

The distanza was fine on tarmac, average on gravel and rubbish on mud...

To be fair I never really pushed it, but it did seem to make the bike a lot quicker steering than the TCK80.
