Here's a blast from the past. Motard before it was even called such. Name the guy sitting next to me on the dummy grid for the next F1 race. Masterton street races...circa 1991.

There was a guy in the late 70s that use to run a YZ250 or 400 ? motard style thing on Ruapuna "Bret Hawker"

That name doesn't ring a bell. But Racing moto-x bikes with slicks was the go for ages before they named it anything. It was a was a cheap way to go road racing, and you could be very competitive until big HP came to play...Mark Boyle, Ian Dawson, Dennis Newton...they all gave me inspiration to have a crack on my dirtbike. Got me hooked.
