Pretty typical in other locations I suspect, the popos rely on their word against yours.

Never turn right in Timaru. You'll never get out of there. The cop was doing them a service.
It's not the 70's anymore and the cops will seldom push a one on one issue unless their pretty darn sure they are in the right.
This is why they now rely more on things like radar and speed cameras instead of their own word when dealing with the usual liar they encounter every day.
People being prosecuted seldom have any valid argument when the camera shows them for what they really are.
The cop that made the mistake in this case was shown to have got it wrong and that "has" been addressed in a fair manner.
We reap what we sow,check it out in the mirror some day.
This is the bit I found interesting in the Timaru example,
