Stolen: Wellington, multi-sport Kawasaki green KLR650

Wellington has been terrible for vehicle theft lately.
My friend had her car pinched sunday before last and it was found on the tuesday 2km away.
Another friend had his Yamaha FZR stolen about a week ago, but has given up hope on ever seeing it again already.
It was pretty distinctive (in how not pretty it was) but not a trace.

I keep my motorcycle in a garage at night. I've also started taking the main fuse out in the hope that it'll stop the bike from being hotwired. Will this actually do a lot to prevent it?

I parked mine outside Repco once and forgot the keys in the bike. Not even then anyone wanted it...

It takes about two minutes to do. Yes it's just a GN... but a lot of people would have said the same thing about the bike that started this thread in the first place.

Yup. Every little thing helps. You can never stop a thief, but it's never a waste do a few things to deter them if you're worried.

A lock on one or both of your wheels would be better than the fuse though as they'd probably just push it out to a waiting van or trailer.

Not to insult the OP but for what reason (apart from being a cunt) would someone steal a bike like this? Surely the black market for KLR650 parts can't be that good. In a place as small as NZ the resale price for dodgy bikes can't be that good.

I hope you get it back and also meter out some severe punishment on the cunt(s) that nicked it.

They don't want it for parts,most of them are too dumb to be able to get it apart without a sledgehammer(even if Miley licks it first)

It will be used to visit outdoor vegetable growing plots,and like as not dumped somewhere when it runs out of gas/oil/sparks,or the dumfuck who stole it crashes it

I don't think so. I think most bikes that are stolen aren't ridden away but end up in a van or on the back of a truck.

I've wondered about this too. If the place is easily accessible by van or truck then it wouldn't take much for a couple of strong guys to lift a bike in, but it is fairly risky. There's an interview with an ex motorcycle thief floating around the internets and he claims that most people who steal bikes via van or truck have short careers.

I doubt the common thief would be able to start my bike and ride off with it (there's an art to kicker her over). Still doesn't stop someone from loading it in a van or truck though. Just make your bike a pain in the arse to steal and it's much less likely to be taken.

Everyone seems to think of thieves as dumbass dropkicks but there are some seriously smart dropkicks out there taking everyones stuff who will never be caught unless they have a bit of bad luck.

This is a pretty funny read off O.R.E about one of the dumbasses though:

i caught 2 guys trying to pinch my bog standard surf few weeks ago.
thought they would come back so i positioned my pig sticking knife wedged from the floor to the underside of the drivers seat.
sure enough later on the very same night a heard a thud and a very painful scream, closely followed by a car taking off.
jumped in my truck and drove down to hospital and sure enough found the maggot there with blood dripping from his jeans, he is now serving 8 months home detention because his house got searched and they found stolen goods.

in hindsight it prob wasnt the smartest way to deal with it, but hey, you earn the money to have toys and you dont want some maggot taking it from you.

So got a call from the cops last weekend. It's been found, and it's in a towie out in the Hutt (where they recovered it from, surprise surprise).

Call the towies up to arrange pick up and ask how bad it is, if I can ride it back etc. They say "you know how the bike was, you know it best, but your mudguard has snapped in half". A snapped mudguard ain't too bad right?

Show up there with a mate and his ute (decided against riding it back) to find.... well if it looked like the beast out of beauty n the beast before, now it looks like a wild wolf, after a ring fight, with a tiger. The cluster on the front's all missing, the tail as well, locks stripped, half the plastic missing or muntered... Externally there isn't a part that isn't damaged - gear lever bent, brake lever snapped and held together with a 2 inch nail. Haven't had a go starting or riding, probably won't bother. For the time and effort to get it back to road-worthy, it's pretty much a write off.

Something else they don't tell you about over the phone is that the towies charge you for towage + storage while the cops are doing their job. Extra $200 kick in the balls.

The cops don't seem to be amazingly forthcoming with details (hopefully that means they're out doing their job), so not much to update on a who-dunit front.

Good news...sort of. My bike was also fucked by the time the cops found it. I only ever saw the photos online when turners auctioned it. Almost made me cry!

Plenty of Gen 1 KLR parts on Ebay. Might not be as bad as you think to repair it.

On the other hand, if you DO decide to part it out , good cylinder heads fetch a premium on Ebay (people run the oil low and fuck the exhaust cam journals.

When my car got recovered the towies kept it for a week while it was ment to be fingerprinted. When I got it back there was no print dust and a fork in the glove box with 2 prongs bent out of the way so they could turn the ignition barrel.
I blew on the fork which revealed a finger or thumb print. I took it to the cop shop but when I went in a week later nobody knew anything about a fork.
I guess they straightened the prongs and ate lunch with the evidence. No worries was only 9grand worth of damage. Not really worth investigating.
