Just booked a place in Fairlie...loooks kinda flash, (musterers lodge studio) for 3 nights but after reading some of the previous DB1K's...looks like it's just Fri and Sun with the need to book a night in Alex?...or do we wait until we see the final route.

since we have to overnight somewhere else, I guess I need to take overnight gear...ie grundies and tooth brush

Hey V, there's a great little webpage you should read with all of the definate answers which are currently available including stuff on accomidation here.... www.epicevents.co.nz/page/87-motorbike-events+dusty-butt-db1k
Anything not on that webpage should be classed as guesswork or assumption and that has got some of us in trouble before.

For the two dayers (most of us) accomidation it says Friday night in Fairlie, Saturday night in Alexandra (accomidation in Alex usually not to much of a problem) and back to Fairlie Sunday night, though some have been known to just keep going toward home once they get back to Fairlie, all be it likely already getting or after dark Sunday night.

The only thing not mentioned on there that I feel should be is the fuel range required but then maybe that is still in flux anyway as depending upon wether the powers that be spoke to wife or husband fuel station owners they either would or would not open for us meaning a possable 290km distance between fuel stops on the longest bit or less if one of them actually opens at a convienant time for us. I have no idea where that stands now.

A suggestion that may have been said before...

One thing that I would like to see or know when we do these rides, is who is who?

We've been chatting for ages via the forum and using our screen names, but then when we end up in the real world, and are on the rides we only find out later who that person was...or maybe not at all.

Perhaps those that want to be known, should stick their KB screen name on the back of their helmet or stick something on their bike.

It may sound nerdy and am requesting 'name badges' (which I agree sounds sucky)...BUT it would be nice to know who's face got roosted

Yep, I mentioned this about two years ago in a post for adv riders.....always a good way for someone to add decals for screen names...
Could be better than a T shirt even?

I had my kiwbiker name on my rear carrier last year.
Next years ride is the thing I'm worried about. I'm on my own next year so worried about geting lost. So will have to learn how to use the roll chart
I have a gps but I really haven't got a clue how to use it. Last dusty (my first) i rode with cold coldcomfort and I couldn't have done it with out him.

Was my first last year and I entered alone, I can't say I rode alone cos on DB your spend all day crossing paths with like minded souls - you are never alone.
I used GPS for first time and there were a couple of times when I was in my own company and took a wrong turn but it quickly becomes obvious and you turn around and sort yourself out. Best remedy is to get some practice with your GPS. Load up some routes from the adventure guide site and have a go at getting around them. If you start now you be a pro by Mar !

Gidday gpcustom, was good catching up and riding with you and CC last year. Still pissed I cant make this year Anyway I used the roll chart a couple of years ago and was good but last year decided to become a little more familiar with the gps (I didn't have a clue how to use it either) and its a shitload easier than roll chart. I can send you a loaded roll chart if you want to use that (assuming no changes from last couple of years) but if you have a gps then give it a go.

Cheers K. Downside of being a manager - I'm just knocking off for the night at midnight (again/still). We are the ones trying to keep traffic moving in Chch during the rebuild which is no mean feat. Like standing in front of a wall with blindfolded, cause everyone who drives is a traffic engineer - http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/chr...ht-turn-arrows

funny you should say that Ryan - I have got a few improvements in mind on #$%^@ Rd and don't get me started on why there is no %^&$ lights on %^&*($ St!!

seriously though must be a tough nut to crack (or keep cracking daily as different streets close and open) - good luck with that!

The DRZ400 thread seems to have disappeared, but thread is pretty much relevant as I have seen first hand three riders come to a grinding halt and mess up their DB1K, spare bearings are pretty crucial to the took kit.

Set of DRZ400 bearings vacuum packed and ready for the tool kit. This covers one of each of the three bearings used in the front and rear wheel so all bases covered. I've switched hubs which run oversize bearings so these are of no use to me. I paid approx $120 for them, they are top notch KOYO bearings. You can have em for $60 including freight anywhere in NZ
